A Vexillological History of Aguaria Major

486 CE - 1346 CE: Iknasonu Flag
This is the flag of Iknasonu, the current second-largest city in Aguaria Major. When Chief Promite first unified the archipelago that makes up Aguaria Major in 486 CE into Iknaguaviazerbaiju, he adopted this as the national banner due to the fact that the Agua Tribe whom he led to conquer the islands had Iknasonu Island as their home territory. He also made the city the capital of the nation, which it would remain until the Blue Revolution. The light blue is for the shallow water in Iknasonu Harbor, the black bars for the obsidian weapons-making industry that was prolific in the city's ancient days, and for the obsidian sands on its beaches. The orange is for the lava that spewed out of the now-dormant volcano on Iknasonu island when the city was founded. The star in the middle is for the city itself, at the center of these elements that define the city, and that its future is always bright. Some of this symbolism has worked its way through the ages onto Aguaria Major's current flag.

1346 CE - 2016 CE: Red Banner of the Revolution
This, despite the Revolution that overthrew the Warlord being called the Blue Revolution due to the fact Aguaviara's army adorned their armor with blue bird-of-paradise feathers, was the banner that said army waved on their charge across the archipelago that ended the Warlord's reign. It is a fiery-throated hummingbird rampant on a field rouge. The bird was chosen for its connection to the revolutionaries in its feisty, never-give-up lifestyle and its fiery plumage. The background is red because red cloth was all that was available to the revolutionaries at the time, as the warlord had taken all the rarer-colored dyes for himself, thinking that they had immortal properties. Aguaviara made this the national flag of Iknaguaviazerbaiju in his first act as leader after the revolution was over due to its significance as the banner of the revolutionary army, and its striking simplistic beauty.

2016 CE - 2035 CE: The Photograph
The newly formed Aguaria Majorian Tribal Council, upon the nation's re-foundation in 2016 following its introduction to the modern world (the Old Democratic Republic Era), made this photograph their national flag in a quest to modernize, utilizing digital cameras, while still retaining the symbol of the previous flag, so as not to do away with the old ways completely. They thought this would show the world how modern they were, as the photograph looks vaguely flag-like. They were wrong. The world laughed at this "flag".

2035 CE - 2148 CE: "Ol' Stars and Bird"
The Hummingbird Emperor's rise and reign saw this flag fly from the poles of Aguaria Major. Jatt Mames was a sentimental guy, so subsequently a lot of symbolism went into this flag. Until recently, as this flag carried into Solitarius Unenlagia's term as Prime Minister, and he, despite the fact he hated it, was outvoted on whether or not to retain it at the ousting of the Emperor, a factbook was listed under Aguaria Major's main database describing the symbolism in its entirety. That information can be found here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/15G83Poiv91v3c3RPER6EebRO9PmRjTjOTDEEhyCX7RY/edit?usp=sharing

2148 CE - 2156 CE: A Step in the Right Direction
The Prime Minister's hatred of Ol' Stars and Bird was finally reciprocated in 2148, when, for the 6th year in a row, the World Census Vexillological Council voted Aguaria Major's flag, "the worst in the world". This did not go over well with the Aguaria Majorian public, and they held a referendum stating that the flag needed to be changed. They agreed the problem was the Old Democratic Republic flag, and the fact it made Ol' Stars and Bird look like a collage, and that it needed to be removed. Flag designs with alternative birds from across the nation were submitted, and this one was chosen as the winner. The stripe from the bird's throat is the, "fire" originating from the fact the bird is a fiery-throated hummingbird. Also, in accordance with the long national tradition up to that point (wrought by Ol' Stars and Bird) of putting history on the flag, the diagonal nature of the stripe, and the association this type of design has with royalty across the globe was said to represent the Hummingbird Emperor's reign. The following year after the adoption of this flag design, the WCVC headlined their yearly report with this flag under the all-bold title, "A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION".

2156 CE - 2158 CE: Unenlagia's Pride
One day in 2156, when Prime Minister Unenlagia was suffering from insomnia, he thought, "how can I make the new flag better?", as he still hated the fact that much of the current flag at the time, and its symbolism, was still designed by the emperor he despised, and came up with this design. He showed it to his lifelong friend, Pranny Dice, asking him what he thought, and Dice responded with, "that's better. Much better than the one we have now. Because it's simpler." Dice published his friend's design on a Vexillology website, and within days, the image went viral. Soon, enough people had seen this flag, and preffered it to the current one, that they held ANOTHER referendum to make IT the national flag. It passed wit flying colors. As part of the conditions agreed upon by the referendum, to finally throw Unenlagia a bone, he was allowed to change the symbolism.

2158 CE-2159 CE: The Orange Wave
After calls in 2158 from the native majority that Unenlagia's Pride looked too "European" with its tricolor and crossbar, a referendum was held in which 10,003 flags - one voted to be the best from each island province, as well as Lavendoria, Every Name I Tried Was Already Taken, and Nation of Beefheart (these 3 larger, semi-autonomous provinces each held their own provincial contest in which their counties all submitted their own designs, only for the entire provincial populace to vote on which of these they would submit to the national contest) were submitted to the Tribal Council, and a round-robin style tournament between all the flags, taking over a year, was held. This flag won it.

2159 CE-2159 CE: The Diagonal
After Aguaria Major once again became the butt of every vexillological joke in the world with the Orange Wave, yet another referendum was held to decide an new flag. In the exact fashion as the Orange Wave, this was selected as the finalist.

2159 CE-2159 CE: The Revised Orange Wave
The Diagonal was quickly scrapped in another flag referendum in favor of a less vibrant orange wave upon learning the international community disliked the intensity of the colors of the old flag, and not the design itself.

2159 CE-2159 CE: Iknasonu 2.0
After being ridiculed yet again for their flag, the public of Aguaria Major decided to focus on their history and vote for a redesign of the Iknasonu flag. This flag's run lasted only a month, before it was changed by public referendum yet again, making this the shortest-lived flag in the nation's history.

2159 CE-Present: Fu'a Fetu
The Fu'a Fetu, or Green Star, was voted in as the nation's newest flag, after the prime minister of Almonaster Nuevo shared his personal redesign of Iknasonu 2.0 with Solitarius Unenlagia. He loved it, and upon sharing it with the public, so did they.
