The Republic of Bute Republic is a huge, cultured nation, renowned for its keen interest in outer space, irreverence towards religion, and punitive income tax rates. The cynical population of 376 million Butes have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

The large government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Administration, and Industry. The average income tax rate is 66.1%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The all-consuming Bute economy, worth 32.4 trillion Bute Dollars a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with significant contributions from Trout Farming, Arms Manufacturing, and Automobile Manufacturing. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 86,057 Bute Dollars, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 3.0 times as much as the poorest.

Politicians can be condescending (which by the way means "showing an attitude of patronising superiority"), holiday light displays just aren't the same without seizure-inducing strobe effects, there is a growing belief that consciousness is a simulated illusion within a computer-generated reality, and depression sinks in after each election when voters realize they are stuck with these people for years. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Bute Republic's national animal is the Bute Wolf, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.

Bute Republic is ranked 17,786th in the world and 436th in the South Pacific for Most Advanced Law Enforcement, scoring 4,641.41 on the Orwell Orderliness Index.
