The Cascadian military started as a band of City-States militias and eventually expanded to a full-fledged force consisting of a mix between professional forces and conscripts. The Western Cascadian Union Army was the start of the Cascadian military, with a small Coast Guard force and an Air Corps. It had started as a band of city Patriot League Paramilitaries, and localized militias, under a centralized command. They had successfully fought both more efficiently, and more coordinatively than what their Cascadia League opponents could muster, leaving them winning battle after battle, and starting up many of the military traditions that hold true today. As the Free State of Cascadia formed, the Coast Guard expanded into a full-fledged Navy with a Coast Guard detachment, and the Army Air Corps was eventually made independent as the Cascadian Patriotic Air Force. The Cascadian military went on to become progressively larger and larger, as conscription laws were introduced to meet quotas to destroy other notable enemies of Cascadia; warlords in Idaho and British Columbia, bandits throughout Washington and Oregon, and inevitably, to fight a war against their Californian neighbor.
The war against their Californian neighbor initially left Cascadia winning victory, after victory, after victory. The Cascadian military by this point was not only much larger and had three decades of constant war to back and a developed MIC to fund its logistical situations, whereas California at the time was overstretched. The Oregon-California Wars inevitably ended in a stalemate, however; with a clear winner in Oregon being Cascadia, however, Northern California was eventually retaken by the Californians as they mustered forces that often times outnumbered their Cascadian counterparts, and became more and more experienced through each engagement. This was one of the first major wars in North America since World War 3.
The most recent War of Western Reclamation against a divided Deseret and California has left Cascadia reigning as the dominant military hegemony in the Continent, with bases and presence spanning Deseret, California, Montana, Hawaii, Alaska and Alberta.
Today the Cascadian Armed-Forces are garrisoned all across Western North America, fighting wars against insurgents, mutants and bandits. They are the predominant military in the North American continent.
The Cascadian military is heavily revered and finds itself quite frequently in engagements both in its conquests against its oftentimes rowdy and competitive neighbors, and in defensive missions at its borders and at the borders of associated states. The hostile land that became of North America following the Third Great War has led Cascadia to become a very militaristic nation. Much of the pnation's budget goes to its MIC and military, and all adults at the age of 18 are required to serve mandatorily for 2 years either as civil servants or military service. This has guaranteed Cascadia a steady stream of eager recruits, likely with discipline, weapon and survival training already drilled in from martial arts, scouts and cadets. This has led to a very militaristic and nationalistic culture in Cascadia, primarily based around the values displayed by the military; the people of Cascadia oftentimes display serious, solemn, and strict attitudes, and oftentimes dry and morbid sense of humor. Many films and movies depict the Cascadian military as being fast, brutal, and efficient, with undertones suggesting a necessity of war to preserve the American identity and take back America.
Due to the belief that it is Cascadia's duty to restore the United States and thus order to the continent, this has led to the Free State of Cascadia operating in a very shock-and-awe doctrine, with not very many rules of engagement in place, aside from ones that prevent the soldiers from conducting outright savagery or harming civilians, such as intentionally harming non-combatants. There's a considerable amount of military policing done among the ranks of Cascadia's military, leaving a well-disciplined army, however, this does not necessarily prevent it from being indiscriminate in how it uses force. After all, the mission is to retake America at any cost.
