The Frontier World of Makus III is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Mitchell Ferris with a fair hand, and renowned for its irreverence towards religion, punitive income tax rates, and stringent health and safety legislation. The democratic population of 2.236 billion Makusians are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whomever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Administration, and Law & Order. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of The Spaceport. The average income tax rate is 56.6%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but inefficient Makusian economy, worth 87.3 trillion Federation Credits a year, is led by the Tourism industry, with significant contributions from Information Technology, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Book Publishing. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 39,029 Federation Credits, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

The 'kind of scrawny' 500 meter hurdle is a popular event, racial and religious segregation has become rife as the various groups are loath to mingle, anti-government web sites are springing up, and Makus III's heavy congestion charges are the bane of motorists' lives. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Makus III's national animal is the Quasar-like Electromagnetic Phenomenon, which is also the nation's favorite main course.

Makus III is ranked 60,493rd in the world and 46th in United Earth Space Probe Agency for Most Influential, scoring 328 on the Soft Power Disbursement Rating.
