Postcard from Colonial Port Manteau
Depicted is a historical postcard from Port Manteau, sent during its French colonial period, and preserved by la Bibliothèque du Diocèse de Papeete, the metropolitan library and archives for French Polynesia. Notable is the concerted effort by the colonial tourism bureau to draw in Western tourists by portraying the archipelago as a romantic escape from commonplace modern life.
Post-colonial Port Manteau, on the other hand, being no longer accessible by normal means of transportation, is therefore not much concerned by the production of postcards or promotion of a tourism industry.
