Political power in Relenbar

After its establishment in 1854, Relenbar instituted a constitution, guaranteeing universal suffrage for all citizens. The Nationalist Party took the reins as the first major political force in both the presidency and parliament. The Democratic Party emerged a year later, participating in subsequent elections. Presidential terms were set at four years, with no possibility of reelection, while parliament members are elected from the 300 districts.

In 1866, the Nationalist Party regained control, turning towards authoritarian policies. However, this led to a significant swing in the 1870 elections, with the Democratic Party securing a landslide victory and maintaining dominance for the next 16 years. A conservative shift in 1886 shifted the balance, causing delays and negotiations between the two major parties. The Libertarian Party's inception in 1894 introduced a new player, narrowly missing victory in the 1894 election. Their triumph in 1898 marked a turning point, diminishing support for the Nationalist Party.

The Nationalist Party faced electoral setbacks, with the last successful presidential bid in 1902 until their resurgence in 1974. The Libertarian Party, dominant in the early-20th century, faced challenges such as the assassination of a pro-economic liberal president in 1956. The Democratic Party regained control in 1910, followed by a series of alternating victories between Democrats and Libertarians until 1930. The Democrats held power until 1942 when the Libertarians regained control of parliament, securing the presidency in 1946. Libertarian dominance persisted until 1962, ending when the Democrats reclaimed the presidency and parliament in 1966. The Libertarian Party regained control in 1970, implementing relaxed corporation regulations.

Four years later, the Nationalist Party made a comeback in 1974, winning by a landslide amid high unemployment figures, marking their return after 76 years of absence. The electoral success of the Nationalist Party, however, did not last long. In 1978, the Libertarian Party made a comeback, winning a landslide and promising to maximise civil liberties, free speech and a free market. The Libertarian Party's dominance continued through the 1980s and 1990s, winning 5 consecutive elections from 1978 to 1994.
