General History of the Indomitable Borderlands

The History of the Indomitable Borderlands can be broken down into several distinct periods of warfare and societal evolution, culminating in the current model state. Early in their tribal period, the wolfen gnolls of the Grendels were only one of many sapient peoples who roamed the Indomitable Borderlands, seeking resources and dominance. The names of these other sapients (goblins, bugbears, and hobgoblins) are now used by the Grendels to name military aircraft and vehicle models after, in remembrance of their ancestral enemies. These beings are no longer found alive in the Indomitable Borderlands, exterminated in the ferocious competition for land and resources. It should be noted that archaeologists have also found evidence that humans also once existed within the territory of the Indomitable Borderlands, but that these humans shared the same fate as the other competing sapients. During this time, contact with peoples beyond the Indomitable Borderlands was limited to violent clashes and raids.

By the Time of the Tribes had passed, the wolfen gnolls had spread across the Indomitable Borderlands and formed Clan affiliations, as they staked out territory. The Clan Wars is the feudal era in the history of the Indomitable Borderlands, where the national character of the Grendels was established. Eventually the clans took on provincial holdings of substantial size, as weaker family groupings were exterminated or absorbed, but nonetheless they continued to war, one against the other. Many of the Grendel clans also began trading with neighbouring humans, to gain an advantage over their rivals, instead of merely raiding them. Occasionally, a warlord would emerge to weld the clans together by will and blood, but once their strength expired the bond that held the clans together was soon dissolved.

The need to focus the growing industrial might of the Grendels' emerging modern society required centralized power and the will to wield it. Several bold attempts to create a modern state failed and were short-lived. The Corporate Council was formed out of representatives from the most powerful industrialists and their private armies. There was a bitter struggle against some of the clans; especially those not represented in the Corporate Council. This state of civil war lasted several decades, until it was ended by the Corporate Council detonating an atomic weapon against the city of Krk. In the aftermath, the Corporate Army was created, by integrating the private armies of local warlords and corporations. The lines between Clan and the Corporate Council began to fade.

While the rule of the Corporate Council was absolute, the stability of any one of its ruling members was at best tenuous. Assassination was a daily part of life for members of the Corporate Council or anyone else wielding power on their behalf. If someone didn’t target you for assassination, you just weren’t a somebody in the Indomitable Borderlands. Despite this political instability, the Corporate Council's encouragement of corporate culture to strive to be foremost among all competitors was very successful. This culmination of a new industrial power was best expressed by the Grendels dramatic rise in the economic rankings of the world census reports, to become one of the most powerful economic superpowers of the NationStates World.

The rule of the Corporate Ministry began, as did all others before it, in blood. Yarooo came from one of the ruling families represented in the Corporate Council. He was sent to the best schools and served in the special forces Kill Packs of the Grendels. During the early wars between the USSR and North Alerica, Yarooo had a chance meeting with the wolfen warrior, Fang, who later became his War Minister. Yarooo was leading a rescue mission to find a pilot behind enemy lines, to locate a Fang, who had ejected from his Super Bugbear jet behind enemy lines. After finding Fang and returning him to friendly lines, the pilot became life long friends with Yarooo. After the war, they met again and together built an expanding series of influence to form a power base for the future, as they rose through the corporate elite of the Indomitable Borderlands. When the time was right they used their influences in the military and corporate world to stage a successful coup de tat against the Corporate Council.

The Corporate Council was dissolved and a new departmentalized Corporate Ministry took its place. Yarooo was invested as the Warleader and Benevolent Dictator for Life, as well as being the corporate owner of both Stealth Steel and the Grendel Motor Corporation. His close friend Fang was made the Minister of War and was also the owner of Borderland Industrial. The new Corporate Ministry represented the families of the great corporations, with less attention given to the Clans, offering a new balance of power. Under the new regime, dangerous extremist forces were destroyed and increased stability was brought to the Indomitable Borderlands. At the same time, a new era of diplomacy resulted in increased trade and prosperity for the Grendels.

Yarooo was not one to allow either himself or his people to rest on their achievements. The Benevolent Dictator for Life pushed for sweeping reforms of Grendel society. Education, once restricted to the elite of society, was opened up to ensure that the scientists and engineers needed would be available for the future. Civil rights were increased to allow the Grendels the chance to enjoy their prosperity, but the most treasured ancient traditions of the people were at the same time maintained. The arts have been encouraged and the culture of the Grendels can be described as enjoying their own Renaissance, under the Corporate Ministry. Free trade agreements have been made with many of the nations, once referred to as honoured economic rivals. Aircraft carrier diplomacy is a regular feature of Yarooo's foreign policy and they have involved themselves in almost all of Wysteria's wars, to protect trade interests and as a way for the nation's warrior culture to blow off steam.

The establishment of Alien City, by the Corporate Ministry, created a walled off human enclave within the Indomitable Borderlands. It provided the Grendels with a captive human marketing lab to test their products on, before trying them on foreign human markets. Treznor helped the establishment of this human oasis, by shipping tens of thousands of their own people to participate in the experiment. Later, Yarooo purchased Isla Vista from Santa Barbara, giving them a human colony and military base on the other side of the Franconian continent. Yarooo's expanded trade and diplomacy with humans has vastly increased the economy of the Grendels, but not without raising hackles domestically. Yarooo has been targeted by numerous assassination attempts and there have been several attempted coups against the Corporate Ministry. The Grendel Mafia joined forces with a foreign government in exile in an attempt to overthrow the governments of both the Grendels and Nephia. Later, Prince Roor of Clan Woodan staged a revolution, whose aim to release a deadly biological weapon against humans in Wysteria, forcing the Grendels to unit in war under his banner, but he was stopped before releasing their genocide. After the subjugation of the criminal operations of the Syndicate in Isla Vista, exiled members of the Grendel Mafia worked together with Wysterians Helping Wysterians (a fake charity that was harvesting organs from villagers in desolate areas) to finance a revolution in Isla Vista.
