Ponderings Of An Average Kind

January 11, 7:51 pm.

You know, I really don't know what to write here. I get I could be about almost anything I want, so maybe I'll do that. This could become my online Journal or something. Feel free to TG me about this if you want, consider this my live autobiography of sorts.

Until then, signing off!

I was just told the weirdest thing...

"At worst, we gain a sense of tolerance for intolerance." In response to my question, "What's the worse case scenario for humanity?"

And it just had me thinking, whoa, that makes sense. Norm, you hear that word a lot, what is the norm? Sure, it can be defined, but for most it looks like...level of exposure maybe? The crazy stuff that's happening all over the world, every messed up and horrible deed, has become the norm. That is bizarre. It's insane. Tolerance is often painted in a better light, such as having tolerance to deal with unsavoury people for long term gain, maybe change them. To be able to put up with inconvenience or ignorance, so to speak.

I have thought of the downsides to tolerance, but never in the way that, that (sorry for the "that" twice, better said then written) sentence made me think. I'd like to say that I already know the benefits of tolerance, really well, like seriously, it's literally a family motto ("In the quest for intelligence, the ultimate goal is tolerance"). So this is a bit of a whole new light for me. (If I remember the name of the people Nebulousness mentioned to me about this...I think these are the guys) The philosophers John Rawls ("The Paradox Of Tolerance") and Karl Popper ("The Open Society and Its Enemies") talk about this. Rawls mentions being tolerant of the intolerant lest the society then become intolerant, while Popper insists that society has a reasonable right of self-preservation that supersedes the principle of tolerance. A quote from them;

"While an intolerant sect does not itself have title to complain of intolerance, its freedom should be restricted only when the tolerant sincerely and with reason believe that their own security and that of the institutions of liberty are in danger." - Karl Popper (side note, I lean towards Popper...also, check out Fritz Heider's "Balance Theory," a bit random, but it's interesting if you're into Psychology).

Basically restrict the intolerant people who make the tolerant people feel like they are in danger. Yes, I see how this also could be considered flawed, as it may put unnecessary restrictions on some people who haven't really done anything. But, I also will say that if the group of tolerant people feel they are in danger from the intolerant, it is likely within reason.

So, intolerance for intolerance...I guess I have a new side to see. Gotta love the ability to think, it does wonders sometimes. Other times it leads you further into the darkness of humanity that no one wishes to acknowledge, but I digress, it isn't all good or bad, but a spectrum!

I think it's funny how I'm just now thinking about this since one of my cousins is a big "intolerance of intolerance" guy. Heck, it even says it on their region description. Oh well, that's all I have for now.

Gotta insert a little something, I don't stand on either side of "intolerance of intolerance" or "tolerance of intolerance." I prefer education through exposure, patience, and time. There, just thought I'd clarify.

I kinda felt like putting something in here, but I'm not sure what exactly. Just wanted to say something, I guess. That's not new of me, not by a long shot. How are you guys out there? I like to know how everyone's feeling. A habit I've gained over the years, I care so much I gotta share it with everyone. Anyone have any new revelations, discoveries? It could be about anything. The universe, world, country, society, yourself, etc. Anything at all.
