Introduction :: BRULAFI
Brulafi as a unified polity came into existence in 1889 under the rule of the German Empire as the colonial entity of German Brulafi. British attempts to found a colony in the region also occurred at this time, however, they proved to be unsuccessful despite their numerical advantage against German forces, and the colonists were absorbed into the colony's governing structure. Eventually, the colony achieved independence in 1904 as the Republic of Brulafi. This government lasted for 44 years, though its continued trade reliance with Germany, and later other outside powers such as Britain, led to the Republic being overthrown by a popular revolt led by General Samuel DUDLEY in 1948. DUDLEY's brand of socialism was, at the time, very favorable to the Soviet Union, which came to be the largest benefactor of the People's Republic until 1991. In the same vein People's Republic joined the United Central Communist Republics in 1954, and was a staunch supporter and member until its dissolution in 1994. After this period, Brulafi began to look more favorably to the democratic and free-market nations of the world, and a series of reforms began to bring the nation into the 21st century as a Non-Aligned state. Despite these reforms, however, Brulafi is still ruled by the same Brulafi Socialist Worker's Party (BSWP) which maintains a stranglehold on the country with repression of most civil liberties and control over most aspects of everyday life.
