The President

THE PRESIDENT

The President of the Federal Union is Almorea's head of state, head of government, and commander-in-chief.

The President has many powers granted to him by the Constitution. These include:

  • Appointing executive officers and ambassadors

  • Appointing federal judges

  • Promulgating and vetoing legislation

  • Issuing executive orders

  • Granting pardons

Ultimately, the President is the fount of all Almorean federal policy. Although constitutionally coequal to Congress and the judiciary, the President is, in fact, the most powerful man in Almorea.

Indeed, the power of the presidency has grown in recent years, especially as the legal vagueness as to the scope of executive orders has allowed successive incumbents, to, essentially, self-legislate. The President's capability to direct unilateral military action is also of great significance.

The President is indirectly elected by the people of Almorea through the Electoral Convention for a term of six years; re-election is forbidden. The President must be at least thirty-five years old and an Almorean citizen born in Almorea.

The Deputy President, the successor to the presidency in the event of a vacancy, is elected alongside the President for the same term. The only constitutional duty of the Deputy President is to serve as Head of the Congress, a largely ceremonial office.

The current President of the Federal Union is Alasdair Hallowell, who previously served as a senator from the province of Gray Hills and was elected as the Almorean Party's candidate in the 2016 presidential election. He took office on February 18, 2017.
