Aryax
Aryax, officially the People's Republic of Aryax, is a country of 7.5 million people with Arkanoviverna as its capital and largest city. Self-described as a unitary democratic socialist workers' state (as specified in Article 1 of the Aryaxian Constitution), Aryax is formally a one-party state led by the People's Revolutionary Movement (PRM), currently headed by Stanislav Tyrankov as its General Secretary, who in practice exercises absolute power. Membership in the PRM is required for all political officers.

The country's means of production are all fully state-owned through state-run enterprises and state farms. Services are similarly subsidized or state-funded. Aryax possesses nuclear weapons and runs a space program, officially for peaceful purposes.

History
Modern Aryax was founded in 1958, at the end of a three-year brutal civil war, fought by a coalition of numerous left-wing forces against the preceding monarchical regime and its conservative and religious allies. The war is notable for its numerous atrocities against civilians committed by both sides, more frequently by government forces at its beginning and by rebels near its end. The most important one, which would continue to mark Aryax for over 20 years, was the razing and near-complete destruction of the capital Viverna in 1957 by forces loyal to the Popular Army, after its commander and de facto rebel leader Diktor Diktorov was killed by a sniper in the city. Aryax still downplays the gravity of the atrocity. Upon victory of the rebels soon afterward in 1958, the Popular Army and its civilian branch, the People's Revolutionary Movement (PRM), of openly communist sympathies, forcibly absorbed most other rebel groups and systematically persecuted those who refused, such as the Social Democratic Movement of Aryax (SDMA).

The PRM unilaterally wrote a Constitution in 1959, which was subsequently approved through a referendum whose results are of uncertain validity. The Constitution established a highly centralized one-party state of socialist ideology. According to its provisions, the ruined capital Viverna was renamed Arkanoviverna and kept the seat of power, despite its population being reduced by more than 90% and most infrastructure being damaged or destroyed. Under the leadership of the first National President, Stepan Gosunov, reconstruction efforts focused on rebuilding the capital city according to the regime's priorities. For example, all places of worship had been destroyed and none were reconstructed.

Gosunov also established a state-planned economy run through subsidies, and imposed collectivization of all farmland. The result is that, during the 1960s and 1970s, most of the economy was fueled by the fast growth of Arkanoviverna's industry and its economy-stimulating megaprojects, while the rest of Aryax was still mostly in ruins until the early 1980s. Gosunov's regime also established the legal, political and institutional basis of the People's Republic, completed by the late 1960s. Even within the PRM, Gosunov did came under mild criticism for his overreliance on extralegal persecution by the newly created Ministry of State Security (MGB), effectively a powerful political police. This gave rise to a security-related elite that would dominate politics until the early 21st century. Gosunov would rule Aryax until his death in 1994.

Gosunov would be succeeded by Makar Atkrasov, a more open and weaker National President. Atkrasov's rule was marked by isolationism, the spread of corruption and nepotism within government and the PRM, and political infighting between different factions of the militarized political establishment. Life standards continue to improve during the late Gosunov and early Atkrasov eras, creating a growing middle class centered in Arkanoviverna, even as the enormous wealth disparities between the capital and the rest of the country were progressively reduced. However, under the weight of corruption, mismanagement and lack of technological progress, the economy began to stagnate during the early 2000s. Erratic political purges and nepotism within the PRM also fueled discontent within otherwise loyal elites.

Political controls and personal restrictions were somewhat relaxed under Atkrasov, and increasingly enforced in a haphazard way. Atkrasov worked to expand public services and attempted to improve their quality, but instead it deteriorated due to an aging infrastructure and economic challenges. Facing increasing resistance and opposition within the ruling PRM, Atkrasov resigned in late 2014. In 2015, Stanislav Tyrankov, then widely seen as an Atkrasov loyalist, was elected and became National President.

Tyrankov quickly initiated a series of purges to establish dominance within the PRM, particularly targeting Atkrasov's critics. Afterwards, Tyrankov embarked in an ambitious reform program, overhauling most of the legal system and the Penal Code, dramatically expanding the use of new technology in the state-planned economy and mass surveillance system, and closing the tiny space Atkrasov had given to dissent. Ostensibly modernizing the country, the reforms kept the state's absolute, unlimited power unaltered, though they improved the rule of law by making most political offenses persecuted within regular legal mechanisms. The economy returned to noticeable, though still somewhat slow growth after the massive expansion of computers and the creation of a national intranet, linked to the global internet through a restrictive whitelist.

Tyrankov has also worked to carefully build a cult of personality around him.

Demographics
Aryax has an ethnolinguistically homogeneous population and the demographic profile of a developed country, with a fertility rate of 2.2 children per woman, barely above replacement level. Family planning services are adequate. Population growth is small but positive. Roughly 10% of the population is over 65 years old.

Aryax has an estimated population of 7,542,891. Women make slightly over 50% of the population. The net migration rate is estimated at close to 0, thanks to tight freedom of movement controls. Aryax accepts refugees from other countries, hosting a few hundred. Except for former diplomats sent to the country, dual citizenship is not recognized.

Aryax is a secular state, though it de facto practices state atheism. Under government pressure, religious believers make a tiny fraction of the population and face severe persecution.

Literacy is estimated at above 99%.

Government
Aryax is a unitary one-party socialist republic that functions in practice as a highly centralized totalitarian dictatorship. Aryax is governed according to the 1959 Aryaxian Constitution written by the PRM, which claims an estimated 880,000 members and tightly controls every aspect of Aryaxian politics. All political officers must be member of the PRM. No other political party is formally recognized.

According to the Constitution, the legislature, officially named the People's Assembly, is the supreme organ of state power (article 36) and it is the only such institution that is directly elected, every five years through universal suffrage. In practice, one-party Aryaxian elections are frequently denounced as a meaningless show.

The People's Assembly then selects a National President, currently Stanislav Tyrankov, tasked with forming an executive Cabinet consisting of the National President and Ministers. Two Ministries - those of Defense and of State Security - are under de facto military control.

The judiciary is headed by the Supreme Court and subservient to the other two branches of government in law and in practice.

Aryax is administratively divided in provinces and municipalities, which are vertically controlled by appointees selected by the higher administrative level, and ultimately by the Cabinet.

Economy
Aryax's economy is fully state controlled and dominated by the technological, natural resources, and weapons manufacturing sectors. It has the structural profile of a primarily industrial country. Income inequality is extremely low, though the capital Arkanoviverna continues to enjoy slightly higher living standards than the rest of the country. Many basic goods are subsidized by the state and most services, including education and healthcare, are free.

Until the premiership of Stanislav Tyrankov, Aryax followed an autarkic model of self-sufficiency. The abandonement of such model allowed an enormous rise in food imports that freed many workers from the inefficient agricultural sector, that now only employs under 10% of working citizens. Aryax has oil reserves and exports oil, natural gas, some minerals, weapons and militar technology. Fishing is a substantial contributor to the local food supply. Aryax has two special economic zones around Arkanoviverna that allow foreign investment.

The country generates most of its electricity through renewable sources and nuclear power plants, the latter of which are also used for the development of nuclear weapons, of which Aryax has a small supply. Most private motorized transport is banned, ostensibly for environmental reasons, though it also helps authorities restrict freedom of movement across the country.

Aryax has invested heavily in R&D, especially during the Gosunov and Tyrankov eras, and continues to do so, particularly on its space program and areas such as physics, mathematics and industry-oriented chemistry. Aryax has its own national intranet, connected to the internet through a government-controlled whitelist that generally only permits access to some entertainment and scientific websites, and its own OS that all computers and mobile phones must use.
