Lady Zaharra's Home Village

Lady Zaharra's Home Village

The village proper stood on a sandy island in the middle of the delta marsh (the sea being not too far away). It was home (in later years) to a few hundred people, members of a dozen extended families. Around it were groves of fruit trees, only some of which had been planted by humans. Melons and gourds grew well in the island's soil also, and the surrounding waters were rich in fish and shellfish, as well as birds.

From time to time the people of the village would row their reed boats a few leagues upriver, to the tribe's main settlement, home to several thousand people. There they would trade for grain, hides, flint, native copper, beads, and whatever else they needed that their island home didn't provide. The weather was good, and life was easy. For a while. Because change was and is inevitable, and it would come whether they wanted it or not.
