The History of South Kerala

Bones and remains of Hominidaes have been found in the caves of Ayyurpakazhi and it is estimated that they roamed the lands of South Kerala around 430,000 years ago. Prehistoric South Keralite rock art has also been spotted at Midhumala.

The early history period of South Kerala was largely dominated by the Tiger Empire, a Neo Kerallite Empire. It was first referred as the 'Dakshin Malabar Districts'. Thiruvananthapuram was one of the capitals of the Tiger Empire which is currently in South Keralite territories. It is 80km north of Kannyirakkodu, and still thrives since its ancient times. It is reported that a small number of families speak the Neo Keralite Dialect of Malayalam, especially with in Thiruvananthapuram but is declining at a slow speed. The territory of the Dakshin Malabar Districts consisted of Chelapattanam, Kanyakumari, Midhumala and East Thasal.
