◆ General Information

Ruvonia, officially the Duchy of Ruvonia (Spanish: Ducado de Ruvonia) is a country in Southwestern Europe with the entirety of its territories being situated on the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a total area of 33.038 km² and was home to around 3.3 million people in 2018 when the last census was conducted. Its most populous city and capital is the Ciudad de Purification, with a total of 293,642 inhabitants. Other major urban centres in the country are Trinidad, Pontevedra, Bóveda and Lugo.

Ciudad de Purificación
The country is an absolute monarchy, with the Duke Máximo I de Agramonte as its head of state. He has total power over the laws, politics and foreign relations of the Duchy. Although the participation of citizens in politics is restricted, the current duke has begun a process of democratic opening, allowing elections at the provincial level and also at the level of the Royal Courts, which function as an advisory body to the Duke (although they lack any real power).

In general, all the Dukes of Ruvonia have been benevolent towards their subjects, giving them a great amount of civil liberties that are not usually observed in other absolute monarchies. This has allowed the De Agramonte dynasty to consolidate power over the years, earning the respect and affection of its people, who heavily trust the Dukes' leadership abilities, even considering that several countries where democratic ideas have taken a central role are weak and unstable.

Ruvonia's economy is also one of the most prosperous in Europe considering the country's small population, one of the countries with the highest literacy rate in the world and occupies one of the first positions in quality of life, peace and life expectancy. However, due to the monarchical nature of the country, corruption is quite common and the persecution and censorship of extreme ideologies that directly attack the monarchy exists.

◆ Etymology

The name "Ruvonia" comes from the name of the dynasty that founded the country more than 600 years ago: The Ruvona dynasty. This powerful family remained in power for more than 400 years uninterruptedly until they were deposed during a civil war by the De Agramonte family. Due to the long time that the Ruvona family remained in power and their strict control of the territories that Ruvonia occupies today, these territories began to be called "Land of the Ruvones", a phrase from which "Ruvonia" derives.

A person from Ruvonia calls himself a "Ruvonian" in English, or Ruvonés in his native language Spanish (Ruvonesa in the case of women). There are other grammatically accepted names, but they have fallen into disuse and few citizens actually feel identified with them, such as "Ruvian" or "Ruvoni", so their use is disencouraged.

◆ Society

⠀⠀⠀⠀● Religion

The Duchy of Ruvonia has no official religion, and there is freedom of worship throughout the territory. Unlike other absolute monarchies, the power of the dukes was never considered as given by a God, nor are they considered to be in any way selected by God. On the contrary, their power emanates from the people, in exchange for protection and leadership.

45.7% of Ruvonia's population declares that they do not adhere to any religion, which many attribute to the country's secular education system. However, the country has been deeply Catholic in its past, which is why even today 44.2% of citizens are faithful Christians. 7.3% adhere to various forms of Protestantism and 2.8% to other religions, mainly Judaism.

⠀⠀⠀⠀● Language

Ruvonia has only one official language: Spanish. However, it is not the only language spoken in its territory, as there are a large number of Galician and Portuguese speakers. According to the latest projections, it is calculated that 99% of the population is able to understand and speak Spanish, while 51% have Galician as their mother tongue, this being the most popular language in rural areas of the country. Portuguese is spoken by around 10% of the population, especially in the southernmost areas of the country.

According to Royal the Decree No. 17,451 of 1982, education in Ruvonia must be taught in Spanish, although special courses are allowed to be taught in one of the other two languages of the country. According to the same decree, all government documents and any law must be written in Spanish only.

⠀⠀⠀⠀● Education

Real Universidad de Purificación
The education is one of the basic pillars of the state of Ruvonia. It is estimated that approximately the entire population of the country is able to read and write in Spanish, while on average, citizens have a total of 12 years of education approved, probably because it is mandatory for all children to attend the Basic Cycle of Education, which lasts a total of 9 years and covers basic educational aspects, such as general history, mathematics, Spanish, English, Physics, Chemistry and Arts.

An interesting aspect of Ruvonia education is that it works primarily through online courses, since students rarely have to attend class in person. This method proved to have better academic results for the country, although many argue that because of it many citizens have reduced social skills.

Basic and University education is completely free throughout the Duchy, although there are also a large number of private institutions, all regulated by the Royal Ministry of Education to ensure that educational standards are met. The largest public university is the Real Universidad de Purificación.

The country is especially proud of the university performance of its citizens, with around 70% of all Ruvonian residents having attended the University, and 50% of them having obtained a university degree.

◆ Politics

The government of Ruvonia is led by the monarch, Duke Máximo I de Agramonte who ascended the throne on 21 November 2005 at the age of 7 years old. He has basically unlimited power over Ruvonia, combining legislative, executive, and judicial functions. Royal decrees form the basis of the country's legislation. The king is also the prime minister and presides over the Royal Council of Ministers, one of the most prestigious non-royal government institutions.

The Royal Council of Ministers is composed of a total of 20 members who must be professionals on their area of work. In addition to the Duke, other members of the royal family usually hold positions on the Royal Council of Ministries, holding the position of first and second deputy Prime Ministers. Said positions are usually held by the first and second in line to the throne respectively. The Duke makes appointments to and dismissals from the Council, which is responsible for such executive and administrative matters as foreign and domestic policy, defense, finance, health, and education, administered through numerous separate agencies.

Máximo I
Corte Real
In addition to the council, there is a consultative assembly named as Corte Real formed of a total of 200 members, chosen by democratic vote every 5 years. It can propose legislation to the Duke but has no legislative powers itself, including no role in budget formation.

However, the Corte Real is a valuable tool for the Duke to know what his subjects want and what they don't, as its main function is to represent the ideas and needs of the people of the Duchy. Although all its members are democratically elected, they must be formally appointed and dismissed personally by the Duke. One of all its members is handpicked by the Duke to become the Royal Councillor, which is in charge of communicating all of the Corte Real's proposals to the Duke and ensuring their correct function. The Royal Councillor has been traditionally someone close to the Royal Family.

The country is divided into a total of 5 provinces, each governed by a President who is also democratically elected every 5 years. All presidents must have the Duke's approval to exercise their positions, in which they mainly carry out administrative and maintenance tasks, although they can prepare and present to the Duke proposals for laws for their provinces.

The creation of political parties in Ruvonia is allowed, although all must have the approval of the Duke to be able to function legally and stand for the elections of the Cortes Reales and for the presidency of the Provinces. In general, political parties with pro-monarchy ideas and with centrist ideals are approved by the Duke, while those that have more extreme ideologies and that attempt against the stability of the Monarchy are censored, prohibited and even persecuted.

In total there are currently 4 major political parties, these are: the Partido Monárquico, which is typically associated to the Royal Family and seeks to preserve their power, the Partido Socialista de Ruvonia, which is a centre-left wing party advocating for more equality but in general supports the monarchy, the Partido Republicano, which although does not want to abolish the monarchy, advocate for more popular participation in Ruvonia's politics and the Partido de Ruvonia Unida, which is a right-wing party with nationalistic and conservative tendencies.

The Partido Monárquico is the most popular among the citizens of Ruvonia, obtaining a total of 62% of the votes, reflecting the Duke's great popularity among the citizens. In second place is the Partido Socialista de Ruvonia, with 17%, followed by the Partido Republicano with 14%, and the Partido de Ruvonia Unida with only 7%.
