Treaty of Rubaetna and the 'Dark' States

Actually a part of a series of conferences on the 'regionalization' of the Eight tribes, the Secularists Summit was held in Rubaetna. The conferences were to align regional policies, to ultimately make the Tribes increasingly more alike to focus against the imperial threats to the north of the Main Island.

The Treaty set the regional standard for Religious Policy, and outlined a separation of any religion and government affairs but did not contain any radical changes to the status quo. However after the Treaty, the states were increasingly free with education and scientific advancements as it was understood there would be no tolerance of religion in these institutions. This liberation of thought and rise of collaboration led to the establishment of the first Universities in Aelitia, but also to the first 'Dark Age' in the region's history.

Since only six of the Eight Tribes had participated in the summit, the remaining two were excluded from the academic revolution. The two Tribes began to feel a tightening grip of religion when three main sects from the mainland founded chapters in the City States. The populace -being uneducated- followed the radical words and teachings of the sects, and began to destroy books of history, science and age old monuments to make more room for worship in their society. The States experienced a dark age, until the weakened government caught wind of a religious conspiracy to overthrow the Oligarchic Monarchies and establish the 'State of the Gods'. The Governments immediately called for the aid of the other six States, and received aid from all but one of them to quell the revolution and expunge the religious stain on their society. For the price of ratifying all remaining Treaties from the conference series (and the choice between 75% of the Nation's wealth or the establishment of a democracy), the two States were saved. Both chose to establish a democracy.

Slowly the newfound democracies were brought into the golden age of academia, and it marked the unification of the governmental systems of Aelitia.
