TCALS Change Part 1 Implemented

The finds history of Testlandia S2

Following a long discussion period and a thread full of traders pitching their thoughts on the Trading Cards Anti-Laundering Service, Ballotonia has announced the implementation of a nerf to the strategy of “saving packs” for pull events. Packs that have been spawned more than 2 minutes in the past will no longer qualify for TCALS. Additionally, they have rather cryptically hinted at more changes coming soon:
Note that 'part 1' in the title means more changes will be coming. Some will be announced, others will not and may or may not be easily noticeable.

The immediate impact of this first change is clear. Nations will no longer be able to farm well before an event, and instead must answer issues and immediately open the packs received, slowing down the pace of the event. With the previous system, each puppet had potential to store 9 packs, all of which could trigger TCALS. Now, each puppet can expect to produce an average of 1 pack that has a chance to trigger TCALS, a significant nerf. With the additional time factored into the acquisition of this 1 pack per puppet, we can reasonably expect longer, less fruitful pull events in the future. Most players have reacted positively to this change, as it seems to strike a solid balance between the removal of “printing” entirely and keeping transfers from having a 100% success rate.

With the change in mind, Noahs Second Country immediately tested out the new system, borrowing a rubber ducky from Ballotonia and calling upon the cards discord server to see how many copies they could pull. In the end, 3 copies were pulled over the span of 2 hours or so, with inconsistent bidding and participation throughout. However, a more realistic test came about with The Northern Light running a pull event on Testlandia S2 a few days later, using all the same conditions as the previous pull events on the card. Despite a lack of success early on, Koem Kab, The cat and mouse game, and The Northern Light all began to find copies. Additionally, Noahs Second Country joined a little later and snagged a copy of their own. All in all, 12 copies were printed in 1.5 hours. Both TNL and NSC expressed their surprise over the number of copies that were created. While not as successful as previous events, it is clear that pull events are not “dead” like many have claimed lately.

Card defending, private pull events, hijacking transfers, and so on still remain relevant in the current state of affairs in the cards game. While clearly a large nerf, many players have already begun creating more puppets to account for it, and it appears that printing is still the ideal strategy in acquiring high value cards. We’ll have to see what changes are coming in the future, of course, but this initial change appears to be a step in the right direction, attempting to balance the motives of various groups comprising the overall player base.

Olympics 6 Continues
We are now halfway through the month of July, meaning that Olympics competitors have begun to separate themselves from the rest of the field. Giovanniland appears to be pulling ahead, using their abilities to find low price CTE cards and reselling them to regional collectors, along with epic flipping. As a result, they have taken a strong lead in the category. Smiley Bob is sitting comfortably in second place, and appears to be pursuing uncommons, though they also have the most bank available out of all the competitors. However, the participants are nowhere near achieving any of the group goals… perhaps they are just slighty too high?

Trader Spotlight
9003 has been recently commended for their contributions to the cards community, and is also responsible for running the Card Olympics every month. They have had an undeniable impact on the cards community, bringing many newcomers to the scene. Card News was able to obtain this interview which helps to explain their intentions and perspective on cards as a whole.

Interview with 9003
Interview conducted by The unified missourtama states. Note that it is more than 2 months old, and answers are subject to change
Q: What brought you to collecting cards, and what is keeping you collecting?
Well I missed most of the April fools event, and I was only open to a few loot boxes, but when it was reintroduced I found out that I had a pretty hideous card but it was an epic so it had some value very quickly I found that I could cheese my MV extremely high, so late at night I would set up a huge sale of my own card and send it back and forth slowly gathering more of the ugly thing but also climbing the leaderboard. For an extended part of early to mid season 1 it was the 2nd or 3rd card on the leaderboard. It quickly became to expensive so I put that project to the side and hunted down Ex nations. I was impressed by DGES work in the field and always wanted to catch up. This turned quickly into collecting commons in general because I could and no one else was.
Q: How do you feel the card community is changing? is it getting better or worse?
There is no doubt that the card community is changing that is a given. The names are what I see change the most many of the people I started trading cards with at the start of season 1 no longer trade cards as actively. However in their stead I see new and fresh faces. I think it is always good to see new faces and get new ideas into the community behind the cards. My arsenal of tools has adapted as different people need different things for cards. In fact cards brought me to The North Pacific and got me back into NS other then just the occasional issue answering. All in all any part of NationStates has a high turn over rate but the old timers stick around the key is that these old timers need to make the community friendly and fun.
Q: Many small cards players like to maintain the idea of large farmers (such as you) as villains, do you agree, do you like this perception?
I think anyone who calls me, personally, a villain in the cards community is incredibly short sighted however are there others who are villains. I would say of course no part of NationStates can only have a good side. I think that there are a handful of traders who are incredible OOC people, but absolutely "villains" in the cards game. For example any one who heists another trader. This is a perfectly legal method to make a lot of money. However I would still call people who often do these things as Villains.
Q: What is your favorite card?
This is an easy one, I love my second season card. I would love my first season card but it is .... uhm... well UGLY.
Q: What is your favorite collection? Why?
This is a bit harder to say for sure because so many are worth noting. DGES's was always a source of a goal to strive for. I also find any of the times that a player can accumulate all or most of a region or rarity that is impressive.
Q: What advice do you have for others in the card community? (Both spiritually and technically)
Keep with, and don't be afraid to take a month away. Every summer due to real life obligations I take a month away from NS nearly 100% and yet I can still hold a top 20 position on the leaderboard no problem. As well as while I and many of the top players have massive armies of puppets there is no reason you need 100s of them to make it far in the cards game. Make them slowly and before you know it you will have 100s of puppets you farm on a regular basis.
Beyond all else, remember that getting a high DV isn't the only way to win cards: go collect your friends, grab those cards that you see that you think are pretty. Even if they aren't valuable or anything.

Thank you 9003 for your participation! If you would like to be interviewed or you would like to request an interview, please telegram Noahs Second Country for more information.

Collection Spotlight
By Giovanniland - forum thread

Here we go again with another collection spotlight! Check out some collections that have come to attention recently:

Epic Season 2: By Mediobogdum II (a puppet of Mediobogdum), this is the second largest collection ever to be completed! The collection contains all Epic cards from season 2, including some very difficult to find ones. Similarly, the largest collection to be completed is also an Epic cards collection, but the season 1 counterpart.

Geared Up: Collector Authoritaria-Imperia is really geared up to buy cards and increase their collection! Here you can find more than 100 types of gears, coming in various colors, rarities and styles.

Rubber Duckies: Although a pretty small collection, it has been talked about quite a bit recently! Ballotonia has acquired 18 unique rubber duckies, and the search for more continues. The love for the collection is so deep that Ballotonia has changed their flag to an animated version of a rubber duck!

Computerwelt: A collection representing the technological world we're currently living on, by The Cosmic Mainframe! The collection's name is a reference to German band Kraftwerk's album by the same name, meaning 'computer world'.

Want free cards?
Everyone loves ‘free’ cards, and Card News is offering another chance to get some!
