History

Socialist Macronesia's military has existed ever since the 1960's with the creation of the Precursor Organization. This paramilitary group conducted attacks on American defense contractors and other mercenary and paramilitary groups in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The official military size is unknown, as most members were either members of individual operative cells around the country or freelancers who were put together to complete operatives with little prior involvement. Most were not particularly devoted to the organization, however, and often only complete one or two operations before cashing out while they still could. However, about two hundred operatives worked as devoted full-time operatives for the PO around the country.

The leadership of the PO was clouded in secrecy. Oftentimes one or two cell leaders took orders from a high command and passed them down to the operative teams themselves to keep leadership anonymous to all but the most trusted operatives. Before 2008, the highest-ranked operative known in the organization was Alexander Lewis, a former Gulf War infantry veteran, who carried out several minor attacks in the 2000's. After 2008, now-Macronesian-president John Ross was his co-head and carried out the infamous 2009 assassination of fourteen US Senators and the 2010 US data center attacks. At around this time, later established by military intelligence, Ross had been covertly mobilizing over two hundred operatives, twenty helicopters, and several converted attack boats.

Pictured: a modified civilian helicopter used by the PO as a gunship takes off shortly before the September 18th raid on a covert military transport. Helicopters like this one were a staple of the Macronesian military in its early years, providing low altitude fire support and reconnaissance.

On September 18th, 2010, almost the entire military might of the PO converged at once. Their target was a covert military shipment bound for South Korea, which, upon further examination of the contents of the onboard containers, was containing ten low-yield nuclear warheads that were being shipped illegally with assistance from the CIA for unknown purposes. The warheads, along with over 20,000 tons of military equipment were seized and brought to the island later deemed Socialist Macronesia. Several defections were attempted from operatives in the initial early days of its existence, but none were successful. Military equipment seized from the shipment was utilized in various ways, mostly as improvised construction vehicles to clear trees, build fortifications, or create buildings. MANPADS like the Stinger, SA-7, and Redeye were used against American airstrikes and even managed to shoot down multiple strike jets before they could complete their bombing runs. The military was actually relatively safe in Macronesia and not a single person in the military died in the first month (with the exception of several defectors, who were executed). However, around 2011-2012, as immigrants began to come in to the country, and were regularly rebelling against the government, military losses began to occur. The close-quarters urban combat and dense jungle warfare began to influence doctrine, with heavily armed and armoured improvised helicopter gunships playing a key role in fighting by being able to soak up hits from most modern weaponry aside from MANPADS, which were often taken out by ground forces as soon as possible.

As more and more people came into the country, a national military police force was created. These forces often used, in contrast to one another, extremely light vehicles equipped with little-to-no armour, such as the faster Jeeps and Humvees, and heavily armored APCs that were oftentimes equipped with ERA and composite modular armour panels taken from main battle tanks. The light vehicles were designed for quick, rapid insertion into a conflict zone and often used mounted machine guns and rotary guns to lay down rapid suppressive fire on targets. They were used more in areas where speed mattered more, such as against lightly armed militants only equipped with infantry rifles or small-caliber handguns. The heavily armoured vehicles were used against heavily armed targets using ATGMs, mortars, anti-tank rifles, or machine guns. The cannons mounted on these weapons could engage targets without putting the soldiers inside in danger, and often were used in combination with mortars to engage targets behind cover.

Over time, it became clear that the standard Macronesian military equipment was woefully inadequate to take on most modern targets. The first Defensive Design Bureau, or DDB, an in-depth examination of the Macronesian military equipment and strategy led by the government to redesign the military entirely, was held in 2014, but nothing was formally decided on until the DDB in 2016, in which a slew of changes and additions, as well as the development of new military equipment, led to the creation of several new small arms, vehicles, aircraft, and ships. Most notably, the VALV program, which had existed for several years but had failed to produce any sort of results, was accelerated rapidly and had a huge chunk of funding given to it. The first VALV flight occurred a mere three months after the DDB, and it was widely adopted within the military in just two years. The later 2017 and 2018 DDBs designed new small arms and ABM/SAM missile and radar systems, while the 2019 DDB discussed nothing but an improved variant of the VALV, the Super VALV or SVALV. The 2020 DDB is expected to also be about the SVALV program, although there are talks of adding a new upgrade to the Macronesian Hornet MANPADS, along with a new and improved air-launched ATGM.
