The Gardener's Gazette
2021 Card Publication of the Year

Welcome to the twenty-third edition of the The Gardener's Gazette, released monthly to keep gardeners and guests alike informed on the happenings within the Card Gardening Society.

Garden Insight
by Giovanniland

Welcome to the Garden Insight for the month of April! Here you can read about all interesting happenings in the Gardens that took place in the last month, all in a few paragraphs. As described in the previous edition, the month started with the annual April Fools event of NationStates, this time revealed to be the Global Trade Fair, and some activity took place in a special Gardens channel called #trade-but-not-of-cards for event discussion. Some happenings of the event were already discussed in the previous Garden Insight, so here I will instead write about the following weeks and their main happenings.

The major happening in the earlier part of the month was, of course, the Gardens' Second Anniversary on April 7th! The day featured a small speech by myself on the Announcements channel, mentioning the Gardens' longevity as one of the oldest card organizations, its success as an organization independent from any region, and the importance of each and every card trader who has chosen to join the Gardens. Furthermore, the Card Bracket winners were also announced, with the top 3 collectors of each bracket receiving legendary cards—they were namely Vylixan (achieving the podium in both brackets), Polinasia, Panagouge, Giraffeton, and Aerilia.

Unfortunately, the Gazette could not be published on the anniversary day, but it came one day after and featured great content! The first edition published after the 2022 Card Awards that bestowed the Gazette with the Card Publication of the Year award, it has been the most successful edition of the Gazette ever, with a total of 49 updates and 381 reads, and also the largest, with over 20 thousand characters. Besides the usual articles, it also contained another Garden Spotlight, the fourth edition of the Community Contribution Awards, and most notably, the announcement of the 2022 Gardener of the Year! Vylixan, an active and long-time member of the Gardens, was chosen by popular nominations as the winner of this award.

Later in the month, the activity in the server continued through Card Questions of the Week. Themes included now-retired card farmers that Gardeners appreciate and wish they were still active, luckiest card packs found by Gardeners in their farming sessions or even casually, and cards sought by Gardeners for a collection or personal goal that were hard to achieve, or even yet to be achieved. Also an interesting day in the month was Gardening Day on April 14th. This day is not only interesting because of the related name, but also because it happens exactly one week after the Gardens' anniversary! This month, the day served as a reminder for the 2nd Gardening Contest, whose winner will be announced later in this edition. Later in the month, a purge of members happened, although only four Gardeners were deemed inactive enough to be removed—and meanwhile, other channels like the Garden Displays and the Farmers' Market continued to be active with collections and trade offers respectively.

Last but not least, it is a tradition to mention in this Garden Insight the names of new members that joined the Gardens recently! Please give a warm welcome to New Kowloon Bay, Islands Of Ventro, Apexiala, and Poseidon63 that all joined during April, and may their harvests give great fruits from now on. Furthermore, here's a fun fact to close the Garden Insight for this month: Ventro's membership application was the 100th response to the application form!

Winners of the Month
by Giovanniland

The month of April featured a total of 14 giveaways, two more than March! There was a fair share of valuable cards like in other months, for example Season 2 Xoriet, and even a special giveaway of Season 2 The Unified Missourtama States on the Gardens' second anniversary, April 7th.

Only one Gardener won more than once during the month, just like what happened in March. This time it was Vylixan, who won the legendary cards of Annihilators of Chan Island and Separatist Peoples eleven days apart. The other twelve giveaways, whether they were a Legendary card or an Epic package, were shared by ten different Gardeners as you can see below:

Monthly Contest Results and Update
by Giovanniland

Last month saw the 2nd Gardening Contest happening, in which Gardeners could either submit a photo or a drawing representing a garden. Three Gardeners entered this contest, namely Indusse (the winner of the 1st Gardening Contest), Islands Of Ventro, and Ioavollr. Indusse and Ventro chose to take a photo, whereas Ioavollr submitted a sketch of their front door garden, further adding their opinion that the key to a really appealing garden is verticality. The submissions can be seen in the spoilers below:

After the deadline at 23:59 UTC of Sunday, May 1st, the submissions were then judged by myself as the Gardens' current administrator.

All three submissions were interesting, but in the end, the winner was decided to be... *drumroll*

Ioavollr, whose beautiful sketch was not only chosen by me as the winner, but also praised by other Gardeners in the Greenhouse channel!

Congratulations! The winner earned the Season 1 legendary card Aleisyr.

As usual, we also announce the next monthly contest in this Gazette edition. Like in previous months, we continue to alternate between older contest types with newer ones such as brackets decided by popular votes. This means we are having the 2nd Collection Bracket this month, again thanks to an idea by Marxmeans last December! If you ask how it works, Gardeners will have a two-week submission period to link me one (and only one) collection that they own either in their main nation or puppet, submiting its link to Giovanniland by Discord DM or NationStates telegram until 23:59 UTC of May 29th, 2022. Although not mandatory, Gardeners can also submit a short explanation of the collection theme if they so desire.

An important note for the second edition of this bracket, for those that participated in the first one, is that collections submitted in the first bracket may not be submitted again. After the submission period, pairs of collections will compete through popular vote, the number of rounds of course depending on how many submissions there are. The winner will receive a Legendary card, though additional rewards may be sent out depending on the number of entrants! So think about what collections you have that could potentially win this tournament, and let me know once you've decided. It is as easy as choosing a collection, sending me a link, and then participating on the popular vote to decide the winner.

See you all next month for another Gardener's Gazette edition. Credits to Giovanniland for leading the newspaper publication and writing the articles!
