History: Following the disaster at Antietam due to Union General George McClellan's failure to prevent the Army of Northern Virginia from gaining a victory on Union soil, the Federal Government is forced to recognize the Confederacy. However, it rejects Southern claims to Kentucky, West Virginia, the Indian Territory and New Mexico Territory, stating that Rebel forces did not have control of these areas over the course of the war. This also applies to Missouri, despite the rebel attempts to claim it as part of the Confederacy. Though it suffers an economic crisis, the Federal Government is still able to secure the purchase of Alaska so s to prevent the British Empire from fully expanding the Dominion of Canada from coast to coast and into the Artic. This purchase proves to be a boon to the Union economy as in the 1870s, gold is found in the Yukon, much like in California in 1850. Following a 6 month war once more with the Southern Confederacy in 1881 which see no change in borders, the United States, seeking allies, reaches out to the newly formed German Empire to help create a more professional military force based on the Prussian model. Slavery, one of the core causes of the War of Secession, is abolished no later than 1868, though it would be decades before race relations would reach a respectable level and full rights for everyone. Following this second War between the States, the Union looks outward, taking control of the Kingdom of Hawaii so as to once more prevent the British Empire having a naval station in the Pacific and to allow for American vessels to have a stopping point on the long trip across the Pacific to Asia. In the 1900s, the Union would compete with the Confederacy on a bid to build a canal in Central America, beating the South by outbidding and blackmail and finishing the Panama Canal by 1913. Though loosely allied with the German Empire, it remains neutral in the Great War, only getting involved in a limited war in Mexico while watching the border with the Confederacy. With the end of the Great and the start of the 1920s, the economy would boom until the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and remain in a funk until the start of the Second World War. The Second World War would mark the first time the Union and Confederacy would fight alongside each other against both Japan and Nazi Germany and relations between the two sister nations would greatly improve as the 21st Century would roll around. Today, the Union is one of the richest and strongest nations in the world though it limits it affairs to social and work projects within it's own borders, working closely with the Confederacy to ensure the peace in North America.
