Here she met with other Commonwealth leaders, most for the first time since she was elected President last November, and some for a second or third time, such as Canada’s Justin Trudeau or Australia’s Anthony Albanese, but her most contentious encounter came with her British counterpart, Prime Minister of the UK and leader of the British Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer. This was Rygg’s second meeting with Starmer since he won a landslide victory in the UK’s July election, but things were a little more frosty between the two leaders than when they met in London in August. This of course came down to the most hotly debated issue on the CHOGM agenda: the discussion of reparatory justice for countries that fell victim to the colonialism and slavery perpetuated by many Western European empires over the last few centuries. The government of St Scarlett has been clear on this issue for much longer than its recent resurgence, with both the current administration and the prior Haugen one in agreement that nations that perpetuated major crimes against other nations in their past should at the very least offer a formal apology for what they have done. Being subjected to colonialism themselves, many Skarlagens still feel that Norway has not done enough to repay St Scarlett for the damage it caused. The government of Norway offered a formal apology in 2019 following talks with the new Haugen government but has never paid any financial reparations. President Rygg has stood vocally against Starmer’s government since they made their position clear that they would not be issuing an apology or discussing financial reparations while visiting Samoa, hitting out at the British Prime Minister on X (formerly Twitter). In further tweets she also mentioned that the Commonwealth is about international friendship and togetherness and finds the idea that the UK seems unable to apologise to those it considers friends to be rather ridiculous and the sign of a potentially disingenuous friendship. While Sir Keir Starmer did not respond to her tweets, he was heard to have told Miss Rygg that he respects her position when they met in person in Samoa. While conversations between the two remained polite throughout the event, there was some clear defiance in her general composure and body language, and she seemed to avoid engaging with anyone from the British delegation outside of formal contexts. Despite her attitude at CHOGM Rygg has made it clear in all recent statements that she has no intention of reduce or damaging the relationship between the two countries and still sees the United Kingdom as a close international partner, ally and friend. While at CHOGM, the Skarlagen delegation continued to stand alongside the many other Commonwealth heads in calling for the UK to begin discussions on reparatory justice. On her speech to the delegations Miss Rygg acknowledged that while St Scarlett’s position as a wealthy, North European nation gave it many privileges not enjoyed by the Carribean, African and Asian countries of the Commonwealth, the Skarlagen people understand what it means to be oppressed and to have your sovereignty taken away by a more powerful nation with little to no reparation once it is over, and she will gladly stand as her country’s leader, hand in hand with the other countries victimised by imperialism. While the UK did not change its position during the summit, a document was signed by all 57 members of the organisation calling for discussions on reparatory justice for the “abhorrent” transatlantic slave trade.
