KC-48

A KC-46A of the 51st ARW refuels a KC-48A of the 193rd ARW

The KC-48 Explorer, is a large, multipurpose transport and tanker aircraft, based on the Boeing 777F (with modifications to carry passengers as well as the fuel and cargo required), which replaced the KC-10 Extender in OSAF service. The KC-48, was designed as a replacement for rapidly aging KC-10s, that would need a replacement for the 21st Century. Apart of the Next Generation Full-Spectrum Dominance Program (which included the development of the F-22G and the B-3A, supplementing the F-35A, and the KC-46), the KC-48 beat the EADS/Northrop Grumman KC-47 (based on the A330neo MRTT), in what was called "KC-X 2.0" in business media, solidifying the place of Boeing in the OSAF's market.
