Long before Vulperia became a nation, there was the Village of Vulp; a village full of foxes. There was debate over whether the new nation should be called Vulp, resulting in the decision that Vulp sounds like a digestive sound and -eria should be added in order to retain the historical name while still making it sound less disgusting.
