Very long ago, civilization began in the far east of the continent after a group of people finally settled down in the fertile and generally habitable lands there. The population of the people there grew dramatically, and so did the size of their land, eventually spreading their ideals to nearby tribes who adopted their ideas and technology to compete. This pattern continued to spread across the continent (or what was inhabited of it, that is), until volcanic eruptions in the far north caused a mini-ice age. The sudden drop of temperatures killed many deciduous trees in the northern regions, and the increased amount of falling pine needles made the soil acidic and led to the growth of the taiga to encompass much of the north. The cold was not only unfriendly to the local trees and ecosystems, but unsurprisingly also to humanity, forcing many people to leave their homes and move south. This shift in population allowed for the more southerly islands to be landed upon and inhabited by humans, better spreading out population across the map. Meanwhile, the volcanoes formed in the central plains grew dormant, though their ash continued to make its soil fertile.

The continued cold dropped the water level of the ocean somewhat, exposing much of the flat central regions and bringing the coastline further from its center, allowing for more people to move to these regions. A certain group of people reached The Great Lake and settled upon its shores, their territory eventually growing to encompass the whole of it and the nearby west coast. As the population and technological advancements of this civilization also grew larger, they began to conquer other smaller states and spread their influence across the land. A similar trend reshaped the borders of the continent, with various empires going to war, and then leading to the dominance of four major powers: Shaqqatan in the south, the Plaenhangder Empire in the west, the Lushan Empire in the east, and Konnazemtya in the north. The rise of these states led to the spread of their culture, and in turn, the ends of others, bringing together previously unrelated people groups in the name of kings and queens. Eventually, Plaenhangder and Konnazemtya fell to internal strife, though Shaqqatan and Lushan continued to live on, though in increasingly more unstable states over time.

Following a lack of rule in the north, the Zaldan people of the north unified their various warring tribes into a single nation and a large power in the region with no one leading it, subduing nearby nations though lacking the power to properly colonize them. Due northeast, the formation of Wai Mokupuni (better known as the Aquarius Islands) was carried out through the conquest of the 'A Hawa Clan, bringing together the culturally identically warring states of the island, and adopting governmental models of nearby Lushan.

Lushan meanwhile faced civil war, with the Malish people in the south wanting to secede from the empire after being conquered and having little to do with the rest of the nation. Perplexed, the King decided to assemble a very large cabinet made up by experts from the various regions in his domain. After this allowed him to keep his land together, he further expanded this cabinet, and allowed people in the provinces to vote on the experts they would send, with Lushan becoming the first democracy in the world. Granted, this didn't last very long, as his son abandoned the system, but it paved the way for future developments on it and also made Malahorn very friendly to the empire.

In the west, the rise of smaller states from the ashes of Plaenhangder began. Around the Great Lake, the Kingdom of Jowarda began its dominion, slowly destroying the remnants of Plaenhangder. In the north, the Squillian tribes settled down from their former nomadic state and began their path to becoming a true state, and the Arubs obtained their independence from the Kingdom of Tacktrubqal, causing them to fall into anarchy following their absence and the forming of the Kingdom of Arubatalia. Tacketopia would not be reunited for almost another two centuries of fiercely divided citystates under King Samuel of Vierseiten, though during this time, such advances as democracy reached the land, and a sort of Proto-Capitalism became popular. In the west, various small merchant states achieved independence from the sphere of influence of Jowarda, and eventually, over time, unified through treaties, political marriages, and war. The most dominant nations, Capis and Lakeland, eventually allied to finish conquering the land despite their preference to Royalty and Republicanism respectively, forming the State of Capitalem.

Following all of this, the effects of the mini ice age began to fully wear off, allowing for a massive increase in population across all of the north, and a generally more habitable world across all of it. In the south, the Great Independence led to the fall of Shaqqatan and the independence of the Halgai, Armless, Newklian, and Bahian peoples. The Newklians quickly United to become Newkland, originally starting out as a sort of council of the Tribal leaders, with internal strife turning it into a cult of personality based around its leader in a kraeterocratic kind of way. The Armless united themselves soon after, followed by the formation of a Confederacy in Halgai, and the reestablishment of the Kingdom of Bahia. A short lived Wiesenstadt would soon fall to The Armless after failing to defend against their attacks.

In Wai Mokupuni, the land was unified politically but not strongly, eventually leading to a coup led by Prince Noa. He declared himself Emperor 'A Hawa, named after the influential clan, and also changed the name of his nation to the Aquarius Islands in order to align himself with the powers of the north and west. He would eventually go on to conquer the lands of Handaemingug and Mashutian, managing to unite the regions under his empire.

With a more stable and now influential Tacketopia in the north, their values of free people and markets spread and deposed the long standing rule of kingdoms and mercantilism. This manifested itself through the People's Revolution in Zaldania, bringing democracy and capitalism to the nation, even if the Emperor remained strongly in power. Capitalem, beset by riots, expanded voting rights and abandoned the longstanding tradition of mercantilism that they had thrived upon. In Squilia, an army of radicals destroyed the old government and established the Republic of the Peninsula. Arubatalia meanwhile fell to the Arub Revolution, leading from one dictatorship to another, this time via the Vitalievich family. Industrial practices solidified new traditions of strong business within these countries, bringing them vast wealth and new power to yield. The great losses Zaldania faced against the Republic of the Peninsula led them to build up their military further, encouraging other powers to do the same.

Meanwhile in the south, the small nations of the western reaches unified into Pakstria, providing a new power to challenge the ever growing north. Under a new emperor they would swear allegiance to each other, becoming the leader in trade through the southern seas. In the east meanwhile, opposition to the newly invented Capitalism grew in the Kingdom of Marxof, leading to communism and major revolt, which, combined, created the first communist state in the world. The commune quickly devolved into a dictatorship however, though this proved to be useful in repelling attacks from the government in exile, only being defeated following the death of their royalty.

In the east, a number of things began to happen. The longstanding of traditional state of Litterarum, still unscathed by any of the world's happenings, adopted democratic practices, while tensions grew between the equally, if not more, traditional lands of Lushan and the ever more powerful Zaldania. This soon led to war, and the humiliating defeat at the hands of Zaldanians acted as a wake up call too late for Lushan, which was split into three nations in the east.

The war which was thought to have ended soon was reborn, this time encompassing all of the continent. In a battle between the still prevalent tradition of the east and change of the west, the west prevailed, showing for the first time the true power of the Aquarius Islands, Arubatalia, Pakstria, Capitalem, and the Marxofpoetry, which also showed its legitimacy as a communist state. The war led to an economic boom, though some nations grew concerned with the new lack of stability in it, with Marxofpoetry, Newkland, the newly founded Mexican China, Jowarda, Tacketopia, and others shutting their doors to trade. Meanwhile, those that continued such trade experienced massive rises in technology, which, as a side effect of it, led to growing unemployment.

Soon after, a large depression enveloped 'The Open World', with the countries that avoided trade being relatively unaffected. In these countries, near autarky would be achieved, while countries like Zaldania, Capitalem, Arubatalia, Pakstria, and the Aquarius Islands would be totally devastated.

After over a decade of general turmoil, government intervention began to slow the depression, eventually leading to its end. A new balance of power of was achieved, with the nations that had become isolationist being able to rise at the fall of others, essentially leveling the global playing field from a political standpoint.

This is where our story begins.

Pakstria
The Sultanate of Pakstria is a liberal, technologically advanced and cultured nation. Their population is intelligent by force and proud of it, as ignoring this is considered to be, well, ignorant. This unfortunately has a downside, as those who do not make the cut are essentially doomed for the rest of their lives as they will be unable to compete with everyone else. Their environment is well preserved and a source of tourism, with their island rainforests attracting biologists from around the world. While their people are generally happy, the economy is tightly controlled, making it less attractive for foreign businesses to invest in their economy for fear of their branches being choked with regulation, though it's arguably better than literally suffocating in the industrial districts of Capitalem, cough cough.

Arubatalia
The People's Republic of Arubatalia does not reflect its title in any way. Led by the Vitalievich family, it keeps a tight grip on everything in the state apart from the economy, which is allowed surprisingly high amounts of freedom. The military is a central part of life, and rightfully so, as it is an honorable and well payed job, not to mention that it is one of the few in which you are relatively safe from being kidnapped by the state for 'the furthering of man'. The level of scientific advancement is also surprisingly high, though limited as some people's inventions mysteriously disappear overnight.

The aquarius islands
The Empire of the Aquarius Islands is a strictly traditionalist and heavily ceremonial state, as unique culturally as it is in any other regard. The overly serious populace prioritizes sterile organization and order, to the point where dissenters from the norm are cast out from society. Nonetheless, those under the rule of the strangely benevolent Emperor enjoy largely unregulated lives, especially in regards to business, which thrives in the Aquarius Islands. In many ways, the Aquarius Islands is a clear opposite to Pakstria, though both nations share a love for democracy and suspiciously strange smelling foods.

The armless
The Empire of the Armless is certainly an interesting place to live. Comical as its name may sound, the country is serious about themselves, but not too serious, because being serious isn't very fun. The capital, Stumps, is named that not as a joke to accompany the name of the nation itself, but in honor of the ancient King Andruists, who lost part of his arm in his war to unify the nation in the field where the city now stands. The name 'The Armless' itself is a reference to the old 'Order of the Armless', a group of Knights that would defend the king. The people themselves no longer defend the King as they did in thr past, and instead are free to do whatever they want in the scope of business, though in personal and political life have lesser flexibility.

Zaldania
The Imperial Republic of Zaldania is quite notable, and not just for the paradoxical title its government takes. The large nation resides in the north where it has stood the test of time (generally) as well as its environment. While farming is possible, the citizens of Zaldanian choose not to farm the land, because a) it's pretty hard, and b) farmland makes for a great cassus belli. The landscape is covered largely by cities, where the government essentially runs the industries more important to them but lets others be. Similarly, the people are free to do what they want, probably because the government doesn't care enough to regulate them, though they have less choice in politics.

Mexican china
The People's Republic of Mexican China is unique, but to an extent. Their culture has few, but still some, ties with those nearby, the government operates in a similar manner to that of Arubatalia, though not too similarly, and the nation came together in a similar manner as other central plains nations upon the continent. While the nation is technically a dictatorship, these dictators are still elected, albeit from a pool of acceptable candidates for the people to choose from. The government also passes little regulation of business, meaning that the only thing the people aren't truly free to do is what they actually want to in their free time.

Malahorn
The Empire of Malahorn was born from the tearing fabric of a now gone empire in the east. Reflecting their origins, the people are strongly unified and cooperative. This can be attributed to them being nice, in addition to the always imminent fear of history repeating itself, though the likelihood of such an event reoccurring seems low. Usually. Despite this, the government remains a stable democracy, where people are allowed their freedoms but to an extent, all being led under a King who surprisingly still intervenes in politics, though typically has the will of the people in mind.

Newklandia
The Rogue Nation of Newklandia prioritizes military heavily, even if the people manage to stay relatively free from its grip in daily life (apart from the mandatory jumping jacks in the morning). While not oppressive, the government does take keen interest into the activities of its people, and encourages nationalism. For the most part, the people comply, because nationalism means cool parades and big guns, though dissenters do not get to experience such fun, and instead get to parade to the mines to fulfill their debt to the state until their sentences are done. The mines aren't so bad, though. Workers get used to work fast, though the real trouble arises in being forced to sing songs about the government on the way to the mines, which the prisoners often despise. Once they are done however, the people get to return to life as normal, with a new smile and willingness to be patriotic again.

Capitalem
The Republic of Capitalem is a utopia, that is for anyone with a large business. The complete lack of restrictions on industry is great for those looking to construct a factory or whatever they'd really like to, and the people are free to live their, albeit rather short, lives however they want. The growing issue with shorter lifespans is not due to a lack of development, but rather rising rates in obesity among sectors of the population due to the gorwing popularity of the newly invented 'fast food', creating issues on buses about as oppressing physically as the Pakstrian taxes are fiscally. Nonetheless, Capitalem is a generally nice place to live, so as long as you are not being choked to death by the dangerous smog of the industrial districts. Still, could be worse. Cough cough.

Inoan
The Empire of Inoan is a democracy in the east, where everyone gets freedom, but not very extensive freedoms. Their people are happy and live nice lives, though this is limited by their abilities to purchase what they want for enjoyment, which they often lack such abilities. The economy is driven by the state, which ensures that everyone gets a job and that no one gets excessively wealthy or poor, keeping things relatively equal under the rule of the very benevolent royalty and their careful eyes.

Uarentfree
The Empire of UARENTFREE is, well, not free. The only freedoms the people get are to buy whatever they want and for whatever reason, but every other aspect of their lives is regulated to a T. The people are fine with this to an extent, as they know no better, and don't really care as they eat and live with a generally good quality of life. The government is centered around the great T-Swaqqens, a legendary leader whose current status of life is unknown but is worshipped nonetheless, in, unsurprisingly, the city of Swaqqens.

After a couple of centuries, the power had gotten to tribal leaders, breeding dissent among the people. Then Newklandia's Great Leader overthrew the old government by commanding an army made up of most of the men in the nation, and continues to rule to this day.
