Coat of Arms

After much deliberation, Frieden-und Freudenland has finally adopted a coat of arms!

The Frieden-und Freudenlandian Coat of Arms Design Contest, which accepted submissions between 1 March-1 September 2017, was organized to finally decide on a coat of arms for our glorious democratic island federation. On September 10th, a jury consisting of historians, experts on heraldry and vexillology, marketing experts, and social psychologists has come together to evaluate over 1,000 designs that had been submitted by the best designers across the country.

A wonderful design by Matilda Wormwood, a 20-year-old Frieden-und Freudenlandian Graphic Design student from Worcestershire University, has been declared to be the winner. Her gorgeous design is seen below.

During an interview, Ms. Wormwood humbly explained the symbolism in her design.

"I think the most important thing was to give an accurate picture of what Frieden-und Freudenland stands for. So I started the design process in my head. I asked myself what my home country meant to me, which concepts I associated it with. The first things that came to my mind were: eco-friendliness, an intense love of science and learning, and a hardly believable, almost utopian, fairy-tale-like majesty. I thought about the symbols that could best represent these points. You see, the main color of the shield on our coat of arms is blue, which represents our clear skies and crystal-clear oceans, just like on our flag. The argent bend, the band you see that stretches across the shield from sinister to dexter, has fir twigs. Fir twigs, as you might guess, symbolize our love of trees, our eco-friendliness. The bend also has charges in the shape of four crescents joined together. The Moon symbolizes our dream-like perfection. On the upper left corner of the shield, you will see a Sun with anthropomorphic features. This Sun, in addition to being an allusion to the central sun figure on our flag, represents our devotion to the light of wisdom that comes with science. On the two sides of the shield, you will see two unicorns guarding it. The unicorns, being magical creatures, represent how our country stands out among the others, and how spellbinding we are. And you'll also see that the mantle of our coat of arms features lush green leaves, again a reference to our environmental consciousness. The helmet on the top, on the other hand, refers to our power, but the fluffy blue feathers on the helmet mean that our power is a soft power that comes not from belligerence and war-mongering; but from instilling a feeling of awe, respect, and majesty in others by always upholding an exemplary deportment. Finally, the banner at the bottom declares our three guiding principles, namely, achieving Peace, Joy, and Freedom."

What else can be said?

Long live Frieden-und Freudenland!
