Note to reader. The Superconducting Quantum Interference Device of Courlany is built on thus.
1. Northern European welfare,
2. American innovation,
3. East Asian work ethic.

Courlany's `Ten Commandments', as proposed by Christopher Hitchens
1. Do not condemn people on the basis of their ethnicity or color.
2. Do not even think about using people as private property.
3. Despise those who use violence, or the threat of it, in sexual relations.
4. Hide your face and weep if you dare to harm a child.
5. Do not condemn people for their inborn nature.
6. Be aware that you, too, are an animal, and dependent on the web of nature. Try to accordingly think and act.
7. Do not imagine that you can escape judgement if you can rob people with a false prospectus.
8. Turn off that fu*king cellphone. The call is unimportant.
9. Denounce all Jihadists, Crusaders, [and other threatening, religious, zealots] for what they are: psychopathic criminals with ugly delusions, and terrible sexual repressions.
10. Be willing to renounce any god or any faith if any holy commandment should contradict any of the above.

Courlany

Courlany (Courlan: Kurlaanen), officially the Superconducting Quantum Interference Device of Courlany (Courlan: Suprakonduktores Kvaantum Haireid Mekanism Kurlaanen) is a sovereign federal republic whose territory comprises the southern reach of Lazarus. The state is characterized by a union of partially self-governing states under a central government. Courlany is situated south of Alsiv, is bordered by Kinna to the west and Mandress to the east. The Daribow Sea bisects Courlany and Wencory to its south. The capital and largest city is Courlanepolis-Sagan, home to two thirds of the population. With a population of more than 16 billion, Courlany is one of the larger countries on NationStates. Courlany's mountains run like a spine down its western apportionment, blocking the passage of rain-producing weather systems. This causes most of the country to sit in a 'rain shadow,' resulting in about three hundred days of annual sunshine. Courlany pioneered the concepts gross national happiness (GNH) and the social progress index (SPI), an alternative to the gross national product (GNP) and human development index (HDI).

Courlany is in the world 99th percentile (top 1%) on the following areas: public education, human development index (HDI), lowest corruption, citizen intelligence, citizen compassion, citizen cheerfulness, life span, citizen health, safety, publishing, highest 'poor' income, tourism, culture, citizen kindness, political influence, public sector support, welfare system excellence, taxation, public transportation, environmental beauty, lowest crime, best weather, industry subsidisation, government size, pacifism, and endorsements. Since 2007, Courlany has scored a perfect 100 on the Krugman-Greenspan Business Outlook Index initiated during the 'Miracle on the Nozoma.' Courlany is in the world 95th percentile (top 5%) for secularism, eco-friendly governance, inclusivity, citizen happiness, scientific advancement, information technology, highest average income, foreign aid, economic output, economic efficiency, and public healthcare.

A comprehensive tax scheme is generally spent on public services, which citizens reaffirm to maintain by vote each year. More than one-fifth of national funds is spent on the self-possessed desire to educate youth from kindergarten through university. Courlany invests 23.9% of its Ω1,851 trillion government budget on education, pedagogy, and learning sciences, one of the highest ever in Lazarus. Courlany’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology has a total budget of Ω442 trillion, and an additional Ω196 trillion is from private research contracts. In the last general classification, for every Ω1.00 Lazarene nations invested on secondary and tertiary education, Courlany invested Ω11.43. As a result, 3,219 of the top-5,000 universities in Lazarus are in Courlany. Amone Lazarene institutions, Courlan universities maintain the highest levels of research activity, receive the largest sources of sponsored research, disclose the most inventions, win the most patents, earn the most in cash income, garner the most in royalties, and leverage the most discoveries into commercial ventures. The country heavily invests in research and technologies focused on pure and applied physics. Since 2007, among its 283,000 tertiary institutions, Herikosian University, the Courlan Advanced Polytechnic Institute (CAPI), Venaabili-Maximilian University, Ostenen Polytechnic Institute, Technical University Reese, Oberst University, and Kessaly University of Applied Sciences, have consistently been ranked in Lazarus first in atomic and molecular physics; first in condensed matter and materials physics; first in nuclear physics; second in elementary particles and string theory; first in plasma and beams; third in cosmology; and third in quantum mechanics. The Kurzweil Singularity Index called Courlany's research in medicine, engineering, life sciences, and social sciences a 'Benchmark not just for Lazarus, but for the world.' A sizable portion of the budget is dedicated to liberal & the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and music.

In 2013 it was announced that the Herikosian Institute of Education would be the lead partner in the Lazarus Joint University for Global Higher Education, a center focusing on the systematic investigation of higher learning and its future. The Herikosian Institute of Education is ranked number one in Lazarus for education.
Courlany diverts nearly nothing to military spending, its people known for their propensity to siphon monies to other matters such as entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and applied sciences. The Courlaners have not fired a shot since 1515. Except for capital controls, Courlany generally has a free-market economy but with very high taxes (top five percent) compared to the rest of the world.

Etymology
Meaning uncertain. Courlany attested from Latin Corlanes and the tribe of Curlii by Quartus Atticus' first century work; itself derived from the Greek Konoforon or "conifer" and native Courlan ylann or "cliff." Traders are thought to have spliced the two separate language terms to mean the "people below the conifer cliffs" and then to "conifer land" (ylann corrupted to mean "land" in their languages). Traders propagated the reference to Kurforland and in Romance languages mostly as Corilania. According to various alternative but not widely accepted hypotheses, the origin of Courlany lies either with the abbreviation of the the local name of the River Nozoma people (karaal Nozomesti) or with amber (kurataras).

Language

Courlan (Courlan: yeuoka kurlaani, meaning Courlan language) is a Haline-Wadiss language family ancestral to the Courlan people spoken by more than five billion primarily in Courlany, the Republic of Kinna, and Mandress, but also in other areas of northern Lazarus in which there is a Courlan population, including Alsiv. It is one of the two official languages of Courlany and an official minority language in Mandress. As a result of a modern diaspora, there are also Courlaner speakers elsewhere in those countries as well as in other parts of the world, including Greece, Germany, Brazil, Indonesia, and Argentina.

The earliest documents that mention the Courlan language are a first century work by Quartus Atticus, and an earlier yet still controversial Greek palimpsest dated to 137 BC by a mariner shipwrecked at what is today Truex. The first recording of Courlan was made by Davari Vaachs on 23 May 1887.

The Courlan language is a Haline-Wadiss language in a branch by itself, sharing its branch with no other extant language. The other extant Halina-Wadiss languages in a branch by themselves are Axphain, Yalbans, and, in some classifications, Sennodian. The language’s origins are not conclusively known, though the most accepted current theory is that early forms of Courlan developed prior to the arrival of modern languages to the area. Courlan has adopted a sizable minority of its vocabulary from the modern languages, and Courlan speakers have in turn lent their own words to modern speakers. The Courlan alphabet uses the modern script following migration from Transcendental A.

Religion

Religion in Courlany was dominated by Christianity until at least the first quarter of the twentieth century. Since then it has rapidly declined and today Courlany has one of the least religious populations in the world.

Early Courlaners, like all of the people in southern Lazarus, were adherents to Haline paganism; the Fami had a shamanistic religion. Due to the efforts of Christian missionaries, Courlany was gradually Christianized in a process starting in approximately 800 and substantially finished by 1110. Prior to reformation, Courlaners were part of the Dominant Church, with the change to Protestantism commencing in 1540.

In modern times, Courlany, like many of her neighbors, has seen a great decline in religiosity, and most Courlaners are irreligious.
