WC | Applying for Specific Nations and Concept Ideas

Great Britain
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and ... has seen better days. A spotted colonial history and difficulties securing colonies and maintaining naval power allows rival nations France, Netherlands, and Germany to compete with the British for naval dominance and international hegemony.

Key points:

  • Britain still colonized Canada and America, but British expansion into British Columbia and the Oregon Territory is halted by Asian settlers.

  • In India, British colonization is limited to British southern India (likely), the Bengal regions, Gujurat, and Burma. The colonial history of Sri Lanka and Maldives is left ambiguous.

  • Britain is the former colonizer of Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. The nation of Santiland in Central America is also a former British colony seized from the Spanish Empire in the 17th century.

  • British Canada may or may not include Quebec.

Ideas for applying as Great Britain:

  • unavailable

France
France, like Britain, has a fall from fame as a result of the Central Powers victory in the Great War [World War I]. Although slightly more successful in American colonization, the French colonial empire and metropolitan nation suffered sorely after the Entente defeat.

Key points:

  • The Entente loss in World War I resulted in the cession of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany in metropolitan France.

  • France is made to pay 30 million francs in wartime pensions and other costs to Germany devastating the French economy in a way similar to the devastation of Germany's interwar economy in OTL.

Ideas for applying as France:

  • unavailable

Belgium
Belgium isn't noticeably different from OTL's Belgium until the Great War, a common theme with most of these nations. Belgium suffers some territorial loss to Germany.

Key points:

  • Eupen-Malmédy is ceded to Germany.

  • Flanders is annexed by the Netherlands following a 1950 referendum.

Ideas for applying as Belgium:

  • unavailable

Netherlands
Netherlands, unlike the previously listed nations, fairs better before and after the Great War with slightly more expansive colonialism and international presence.

Key points:

  • Following World War I, the Netherlands experiences "greater cooperation" with Germany. Take this as you wish.

Ideas for applying as Netherlands:

  • unavailable

Spain
It's not necessary for Spain to be unified or divided in the modern era as Spain's significance is held in its colonial past.

Key points:

  • The Crown of Castile was formerly part of the Iberian Union that dissolved in the early-to-mid 17th century.

  • The majority of nations in the Americas are former Spanish colonies.

Ideas for applying as Spain:

  • unavailable

Portugal
Of course Portugal is relevant! How dare it not be?

Key points:

  • Maracaja is a former Portuguese colony in South America that corresponds to Brazil and Uruguay.

  • Timor-Leste is a former Portuguese colony in Southeast Asia.

  • Goa and Daman and Diu are former Portuguese colonies in India.

  • Macau is leased to Portugal and returned to China in 1999 as per the 1554 Luso-Chinese Agreement between the Kingdom of Portugal and Ming China.

  • The Crown of Portugal was formerly part of the Iberian Union that dissolved in the early-to-mid 17th century.

Ideas for applying as Portugal:

  • unavailable

Sweden
A minor note for a minor nation.

Key points:

  • Sweden aligns with the Central Powers during the Great War.

Ideas for applying as Sweden:

  • unavailable

Russia
Sorry Romanovs, your time is up in the 1918. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was the successor state of the Russian Empire following the Russian Civil War in 1922. Lasting until 25 December 1991, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics spooked Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia with its communist bloc.

Key points:

  • The United Baltic Duchy, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, and Finland gained independence from the Russian Empire at the close of the Great War [World War One].

  • The Soviet Union's formal date of creation is 1922; possibly earlier, depending on the player.

  • The Soviet Union's formal date of collapse is 25 December 1991, but this in no way means that you are unable to choose a communistic Russia.

  • It is implied—but not necessary—that Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine became German-backed states following the end of the Great War [World War One] just as the United Baltic Duchy and Finland had.

Ideas for applying as Russia:

  • unavailable

Mongolia
Mongolia was a Chinese territory well into the mid-1930s, but when independence is gained it is conditional.

Key points:

  • During the tumultuous and fracturing 193? Great Rebellions, Mongolia breaks away from the reunified Chinese government as the theocratic Bogd Khanate under the 10th Bogd Khaan.

  • Mongolia's independence was recognized officially by the Chinese government by an untitled treaty between the theocratic Mongol government and the Chinese government based in Nanjing. This treaty secured Mongolian sovereignty with the territories of Outer Mongolia and Tannu Uriankhai. However, Mongolia is made a satellite of the Chinese government.

  • Mongolia at least until 1940 pursued a policy of Pan-Mongolism, a nationalist and irredentist ideology that aimed to unite all of the Mongol banners under one nation.

Ideas for applying as Mongolia:

  • unavailable

United States
Looking at the map, it's not hard to notice how fractured America is. So what exactly happened, and how do you join in?

Key points:

  • America's expansion into the west is highly historically altered.

  • The United States sees large-scale secession in the 1990s after overwhelming political turmoil wrought from the Cold War.

  • The legal successor government to the United States needs to have the national capitol in Washington, D.C. or possibly even Philadelphia, PA.

  • It is preferable that you don't choose the rest of America to swallow up the remaining states; be mindful of which states/regions are likely to separate. If Louisiana can secede, why not any other state?

  • Try to keep your state/group of states as close to the real-world identity of that state/group of states.

Ideas for applying as the United States/U.S. States:

  • unavailable

Canada
O Canada, you've lost most your [natural] majesty, but that doesn't make you any less special.

Key points:

  • Quebec and surrounding areas are French-speaking, hon hon hon.

  • France is still clinging on to St. Pierre et Miquelon off the coast of Newfoundland.

Ideas for applying as Canada:

  • unavailable

Turkey
From the Seljuk beyliks to the Rum Sultanate to the Ottoman Empire, the Anatolian Turks may not have the most ideal history in World Conference, but they seem to have a proud nation and enormous tenacity.

Key points:

  • The Ottoman Empire is repulsed from Europe, save for Eastern Thrace, the entirety of the Macedonia region, and southern Bulgaria, in 1539 due to a Hungarian-Bulgarian-Greek coalition capturing Thessaloniki until it is recaptured by the Ottomans in centuries later.

  • The history of the Ottoman Empire after its repulsion from Europe is largely ambiguous and holds many opportunities for Africa and elsewhere in the Middle East.

  • Depending on how nations fill the Anatolian map space, a greater Turkish state is likely to have been severely partitioned with possibilities for independent Kurdistan, Armenia, Pontus, and Antioch, so if you're planning on applying as Turkey, make it speedy!

Ideas for applying as Turkey:

  • Turkish Kemal Republic: [1]
a nationalist, avowedly ethnic Turkish republic established by militant revolutionary Mustafa Kemal Atatürk sometime in the 1920s.

Middle East
The Middle East is everybody's favorite oil-rich, ethnoreligiously zealous, and historically ancient region. A lot of stuff goes down here!

Key points:

  • Don't change anything up until roughly the age of the Mamluk Sultanate in the 15th Century unless it's a minor alteration. It gets messy, so be sure to consult admissions if you're unsure if your nation will be accepted or not.

  • Israel is unlikely, but not impossible, to form as the Nazi-led holocaust is completely avoided, and Jews are generally treated more fairly in Europe, particularly in Germany and Northern Europe.

  • Whatever the nation is, try to avoid Sykes-Picot borders as it canonically doesn't make sense in our history. See PHN and NPC roster for preferable borders.

  • Your nation isn't expected to be majority Muslim nor majority Arab at all; just provide the circumstances for its existence, as with any other nation when applying.

  • Returning to non-Arab/non-Muslim majority nations, Kurdish, Christian, Assyrian, Alawite, and even Druze nations are very plausible and even encouraged by most players.

Ideas for applying as Middle Eastern nations:

  • Lebanese Republic: [1]
a strong Christian state heavily influenced by France.
  • Syrian Republic: [1]
     an authoritarian, Arab nationalist state.
  • Iraqi Republic: [1]
     an authoritarian state in Mesopotamia.
  • Israeli Republic: [1]
a multi-confessionalist state of Jews, Christians, and Sunni Muslims situated in the Holy Land. *Currently unlikely due to regional canon.*

Eastern Europe
If you're settling in Eastern Europe, chances are, your nation hasn't been independent for more than a century. Most nations will have been formed from the former Russian Empire through the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk or from Germany or Carpathia half a century prior to the Great War [World War One].

Key points:

  • It is implied Poland and Lithuania are released from the Russian Empire at the conclusion of the Great War in 1918.

  • It is implied Ukraine and Belarus are also released from the Russian Empire at the conclusion of the Great War in 1918, but if you wish for either nation to be annexed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics then that is also perfectly all right.

  • Although not considered Eastern European, Czechia is likely to have gained independence from the Holy Roman Empire and remained politically dependent on Germany or Carpathia.

  • Also not considered Eastern European, Finland is released from the Russian Empire with southern and eastern Karelia.

Ideas for applying as an Eastern European nation:

  • unavailable

Central Asia
Every nation in Central Asia will have to be a post-Soviet nation. Sorry, Central Asian ethnic groups and natural resources.

Key points:

  • The former Central Asian nations are annexed into the Soviet Union.

  • Whichever Central Asian nation borders Afghanistan to the south must include Soviet interference in Afghanistan and northern Mughalia in their history.

  • The Aral Sea exists to its fullest extent.

Ideas for applying as a Central Asian nation:

  • unavailable

Japan
Despite being short a few islands, Japan may still very well be the island nation we all know and recognize.

Key points:

  • Japan is a major player during the Second Great War.

Ideas for applying as Japan:

  • unavailable

Korea
Foreign policy is key with Korea. You can end up prosperous or completely isolated depending on how you play your cards.

Key points:

  • Korea has been a Chinese protectorate since the Ming dynasty.

  • Korea may or may not have been a former Japanese colony depending on your choice.

  • It is unlikely that Korea transitions to a communist nation, but not impossible. If this is the case, prepare for tense relations with China.

  • An ethnic Korean population constitutes a substantial portion of Parhic demographics in North America.

Ideas for applying as Korea:

  • unavailable

Italy
A newer major nation on the European continent, Italy has a few key points to maintain when applying.

Key points:

  • The Vatican City State is granted independence in 1929 via the Lateran Treaty.

  • The Republic of San Marino must remain independent in order for successful Italian reunification.

  • Venice is never part of the Austrian Empire.

Ideas for applying as an Italian nation:

  • Venetian Republic: [2]
an aristocratic, classically liberal state in the heart of the Veneto region renowned for its culture & arts and sinking capitol.

Iran
The Persian culture permeates the region where Iran is situated, but is that true for Persia itself?

Key points:

  • The 1813 Treaty of Golestan reestablishes the Russo-Persian borders.

  • The Safavid dynasty conquered the Mashriq and southeastern Turkey c. 17th century.

  • Assyria is lost to Turkey between 1916 and 1918.

  • Iran transitioned into a communist state sometime during the Cold War, likely in the '50s, and fought a "war of liberation" with the Mughal Empire in early 2018 in which Iran lost.

Ideas for applying as Iran:

  • unavailable

"New World"
The vast American continents provided bountiful opportunities for several nations of antiquity to increase their wealth, power, and prestige. How did your New World nation come to be?

Key points:

  • Europeans "discover" the Americas for colonization in 1492 through Christopher Columbus.

  • Players may choose their colonial history if any at all, but it must be cohesive with regional history. If you have an idea but are unsure if it will conflict with regional history or not, contact admissions before applying.

Ideas for applying as a "New World" nation:

  • unavailable

Africa
Africa is a continent of wonders and long history; it is the cradle of mankind. But this cradle has been violently rocked through the centuries.

Key points:

  • It is recommended that African history remains unchanged until around the 16th century.

  • African nations may choose whether or not their nation was colonized at all, but uncolonized nations are expected to have natural borders and an explanation to the formation of their state (as with any nation).

  • African nations may choose their colonial history, but it must be cohesive with regional history. If you have an idea, but are unsure if it will conflict with regional history or not, contact admissions before applying.

Ideas for applying as an African nation:

  • unavailable

Carpathian Crowns
The Carpathian Empire is a large state in Central Europe divided into several crowns--one of which may be yours.

Key points:

  • Each crown is a constituent country within Carpathia with high autonomy but subject to federal laws.

  • The Kingdom of Hungary is controlled by Magyar monarchia exclusively.

  • Each constituent crown has its own set of unique political and social scenes as explained by Magyar monarchia.

Choices for applying as a Carpathian crown:

  • Kingdom of Austria.

  • Kingdom of Croatia.

  • Kingdom of Wallachia.

  • Principality of Belgrade.

  • Duchy of Ruthenia.

a German, Roman Catholic micro-state in the heart of the Alps; a creation of the collapse of the German Confederation in 1815.
  • Sonderbund: [2]
