Harren island

We've had quite a lot of discussion about this in the Security discussion on the discord, however, I'll post my feelings on the matter here.

I know I'm not as familiar with the NS system as you guys and I don't have as much history here as most of you, however, from what I can see, I don't necessarily see the need to form a new region yet. If there's stuff to save, save it/backup and keep on going as normal (with the Password) and *if* Raiders destroy/ claim the region, then form a new one and put our saved stuff on it.

Greater slavacia

From what I understand, the only things that need to be migrated are the World Factbook Entry and some of the Bulletins. Since the Bulletins are already made by other nations, it should not be too hard? In that case, I am all for a migration and support it wholeheartedly!

I'd say stick to this region for now. If raiders should become a problem, we can still make a new one.

Creating a new region should be a last resort in case of a successful invasion. If others find this to be a legitimate fear, then we could at least compromise on the subject by creating this potential new region, and populate it with puppets for the time being. Only moving there if the worst occurs and we need it.

For those of you suggesting we stay here for now, what are your thoughts on staying password-protected, versus removing the password and allowing the free entry of nations?

I mean the only thing of substance that we loose by leaving are lurkers that puff our numbers and the larger loss of our RMB. I fear that without a move we will either dwindle or we will get hit hard and people won't come back together after. A preemptive move is a better action to keep the region safe consistently. Having a founder puppet is by far the safest way for RP regions

Nouvel Acadie wrote:To remedy this, I am proposing that we set up a new region (It could simply be called the 4th Charter, or the New Charter...that's not the point...yet), setup by a new founder. That would enable players to find us, while avoiding the Raider Danger. It also means, however, that every nation would need to 'migrate' to the new region. We would need to do some administrative work to transfer the map and other info, but its doable.

Please provide feedback. Soon.

We've see-sawed back and forth, but we are also in favor a a preemptive, ordered move. That would give time for the factbooks, RPs, the map, and anything else of value to be copied over easily and ensure that nothing is lost (or at least as little as possible).

Our one remaining hesitation is the sticking point of how the new founder will be handled. Will it be a member of the region? A puppet? If so, how do we avoid doing this same song and dance again two years down the road when the new founder also gets hit by a bus? That should be figured out, sooner rather than later. We're in favor of a puppet held by multiple people, but there are (completely valid) reasons why that's a bad idea, so the region should decide what they'd like to do.

Regardless, we think a new region, with a founder, is the best idea. It's the most secure, and avoids having to have a password on the region and be constantly looking over our shoulders.

Good point. I was recently discussing a related topic on Discord, where I tongue-in-cheek mentioned that many players are in school, and pretty soon, one by one, they wil graduate, get jobs, get married, move, etc, and we lose them. In the long-term, that's inevitable.

I think the way around this - and to answer your question - is that a puppet nation is set up as founder. THEN, we give the password for that Puppet-Founder to 2 or three people (WA Delegate, President, and Justice? Some other Random Three?) to make sure that if someone disappears for a while, there will still be able to be someone to prevent the Founder's CTEing.

In my opinion, we do need to refound but I'm not convinced now is the right time. I'm in favour of holding off for a couple more months. Refounding the region will no doubt be intensive, and I imagine we will want to be able to show increased activity after the refound to encourage new players. A substantial number here will be working on dissertations, coursework and their alcoholism (*glares at Rome*) in the next couple of months, and therefore won't be able to be actively engaged. If we're going to refound we need to give it our best shot.

As North said, we'll lose the RMB which will obviously mean a large chunk of our history is missing. 1469 pages of messages sounds (and is) a lot, but it is also important to remember that many of these messages are likely jokes, "Posted" messages or else gotham. It would be a shame to lose our history - perhaps someone has an idea of how we could archive it; though I imagine any attempt would be time consuming, and likely not worth it.

With regards to Nouvel's question, if we were to stay here I would continue to advocate for a password. A founderless passwordless region is only inviting trouble, and it is likely that at some point we would end up being raided. Whilst membership numbers will dwindle over time, I belief that the majority of us are (and have been) in for the long haul regardless. As has already been discussed on discord, it's also best to remember the effectiveness of recruiting people you already know; the retention rate is far higher. In all honesty, I believe we ought to be focused on retention and not numbers.

And with regards to who should know the password for a founder puppet, I'm in favour of two or three members knowing it. I've just seen Nouvel's message and agree the Chief Justice is the best way to go. I would suggest that Myraxia and Iryllia should be the other two who know it. They're the two who have been here longest, and likely won't CTE anytime soon. I'm not convinced giving it to a president is the best idea; it would mean changing it every time a president gets elected, or else the number who know the password will continue to climb - probably not the best idea for security. And then there is always a possibility (however slim) that a future president is corrupt, or else has a massive hissy and gives the password to unwelcome guests, who will then gain access to the account etc. It's unlikely, but the point in the puppet is to be secure, and we probably ought to make it as secure as possible.

We've been going back and forth on the matter for a while now, on the discord and here. There are people on both sides of the line.

I say we put it to a vote and settle it.

Go at it.

Shouldn't there be a red bus somewhere, telling us to take back control and that 350 million ruons will be spent on free booze if we vote to leave the region?
