Nanisivik

The government of Nanisivik officially condemns American racist police brutality and congratulates Minneapolis freedom fighters for their liberation of the 3rd Precinct. This backward nation still uses cash bail and civil asset forfeiture to systematically imprison and immiserate poor and minority communities, so if you’re inclined please send foreign aid to bail relief funds in Minneapolis and other cities. Solidarity!

Around the Islands

~ In May, XKI broke its all-time population record from 2013, reaching a peak of 3,230 nations! Chief Executive Markanite made it rain free tacos to Islanders in a week-long celebration. Strong thanks to all of our hard-working recruiters who helped out!

Meet A Nation Interview

In this edition, we have the distinct pleasure to sit down and talk with an Islander who has been with us for a long time but only recently returned from a few years absence. Controlitia has in the past served in TITO Command and on the Council of Nine and currently serves as the newly elected Senator for New Republica South and as a TITO Knight.

GK: To start things off, do you have an earliest memory of XKI? If not, do you remember how you joined NS/XKI?

Control: I don’t really have a concrete earliest memory, but I do remember how I joined both NS and XKI. I joined NS because I came across Lexicon in a public library and liked it. When I looked into Max Barry more, I found out about NationStates. I played it for a bit and then started to get bored with just the one nation (Fosfjapias, named by keysmashing) and created a couple puppets to try for specific government types. One of those puppets got a recruiting telegram from Markanite that included some information about TITO, so I sent that puppet to XKI to join in and all of a sudden it was my main.

GK: So what made you decide to come back to NS after being away for a few years?

Control: I thought about checking in on XKI after years away due to the pandemic, but I rejoined because I wasn’t in college anymore. One of the main reasons that I CTE’d was that I was busy with schoolwork and clubs and such and didn’t have much time for NationStates. I was also usually in class at minor and doing homework or hanging out with friends at major, so I didn’t even have TITO to drive involvement. Now that I work a desk job, I can be around a lot more.

GK: Can you talk about some of the major changes you've noticed in XKI since returning?

Control: One thing that struck me was that politics have gotten more active. In my experience, XKI politics were broadly run along the lines of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and people didn’t really look to change much. Politics are much more active today and people are actively looking for things that we can improve and innovate on. You can also see a change in tone from the comments in my yaffice; it’d be a lot harder to see Barry going around and pretending to bribe senators today. It’s also odd to be in an XKI without Grub.

GK: And what about things that haven't changed? Do you feel like there are some aspects of XKI that have pretty much stayed the same?

Control: I feel like Taco Island has not changed much. Still spammy, still fun. XKI as a whole is as welcoming and laid back as ever. I don’t feel like TITO has changed all that much either, which works for me 😉

GK: I have to ask, with your extensive past work in TITO as a Knight and former member of Command, how does it feel to be back in action?

Control: It’s good to be back in the saddle and working to protect the people of NationStates from unconscionable griefing.

GK: And do you have any sage words of wisdom as an experienced player to newer nations?

Control: NationStates is what you make of it, so get involved but don’t overcommit. It’ll be boring if you let it be boring, it’ll be overwhelming if you get overinvolved. Find your sweet spot and it’s a great game.

GK: Lastly, can you describe XKI in a single word?

Control: Welcoming.

Until next month, your 10KI Update Staff is signing off - Grea Kriopia

Good to see Maas our minister of finance return in these difficult economic times.

Unfortunately the weather forecast is unavailable this week due to an unsecured connection but official advice is that you should all still stay at home.

Kingdom of the polar bear, Maas, Jajan, and Antarc

The usual weather report I use is suffering from privacy issues and its surprisingly difficult to obtain a weather forecast in the written word it's mostly maps and automation, I think I have a device that can access it so I'll give that a try next week if things are the same.

2020 June Sea Ice Outlook Report is Now Available

The 2020 June Sea Ice Outlook (SIO) report is now available. The Sea Ice Outlook, an effort managed by the Sea Ice Prediction Network–Phase 2 (SIPN2), provides an open process for those interested in Arctic sea ice to share predictions and ideas. The monthly reports contain a variety of perspectives—from advanced numerical models to qualitative perspectives from citizen scientists. The Outlook is not an operational forecast.

For the 2020 June report, 33 contributions were received that included pan-Arctic predictions. Of those contributions eight included predictions for pan-Antarctic and the Alaska Region. Additionally, we received 13 submissions of sea-ice probability and ten submissions of first ice-free date. New this year, the report includes ice-free conditions for the Hudson Bay region; September sea-ice concentration contour in the Fram Strait region, motivated by the MOSAiC expedition; and we invited contributors to submit initial conditions (sea-ice concentration and sea-ice thickness) of their forecasts to better understand how observations are being used in forecasts.

For the pan-Arctic, the median June Outlook value for September 2020 sea-ice extent is 4.33 million square kilometers, with quartiles of 4.06 and 4.59 million square kilometers. The median is close to the 2019 June Outlook, of 4.40 million square kilometers, and to the observed 2019 September sea-ice extent of 4.32 million square kilometers.

Poll..... Housekeeping, Should we remove the New forum link from the factbook? It's never been used and in fact we never use the forums now at all, the old one is sitting there as an archive and can be used if necessary or is it doing no harm just sitting there? Don't mind one way or the other? It might be fun just to press the Abstain button

We could add a third (fourth?) forum...

Nanisivik wrote:We could add a third (fourth?) forum...

True I should have listed that as a possibility in the Poll.

The 7 day weather forecast summary for Arctic:

Taking a look at Arctic over the coming week and the average daytime maximum temperature will be around 5°C/41F, with a high for the week of 7°C/44·6F expected on the afternoon of Saturday 4th. The average minimum temperature will be 1°C/33·8F, dipping to its lowest on the morning of Wednesday 8th at 0°C/32F. Expect the week ahead to remain predominantly dry. On the whole winds are likely to be moderate.

I missed the poll but would have voted to
discard. Historically we’ve never stuck with forums

Yes there was a group of residents that made the old forum but since they died out it's never been used, just a museum really and the new one was never used.

Poet Laureate Competition

June brought around the XKI Poet Laureate Competition where the region's finest poet's faced off on the topic of 'anger', aiming for the best poem on the topic in any form or style. The winner of this competition was Liberdon and their poem, The Storm's Wrath, is featured below:

The Storm’s Wrath

The midnight sea lay still
Until a wind started to blow
And silence fell to a shrill
And once calm waves began to grow

Far above foaming dark
Rested thatched roofs and clay walls
Nestled in straw, a lark
All unaware as the wind calls

Higher! Higher! the waves howl
Leaping, lashing the salty rock
Suddenly the skies growl
Tick, tock, tick says the clock

Crash! A terrible sound
Waves strike and tear, unleashing wrath
Bash! Bang! Roar! the waves bound
Forgetting caution, the waves scathe

Wind grows weary and dies
Waves calm and recede to the sea
Morning dawns on clear skies
But on wreckage and debris

But do not despair, for
The storm has no more spite
Rejoice and leap and soar
And rebuild what was lost last night

For no storm can last long
And clear skies will always return
The trick is staying strong
Until the waves and wrath adjourn

As Santa Claus and his reindeer will tell you, Arctic is a cold, dry and windy place only fit for the Abominable Snowman.

Arctic Land of Extremes

The Arctic region sees big fluctuations in climate and environment, and the ecological balance is fragile and slow to recover. Plants and animals need a lot of therapy to adapt to this stressful life.

In the winter, anticyclones – high pressure systems that rotate clockwise – dominate the region’s weather patterns. In the summer, these systems decrease and warmer, wetter ocean air visits the region.

During the winter, it’s cold, dark and the temperature rarely gets above freezing. Summer hits quickly with nearly continuous daylight from May to July, and that’s when everything comes to life in the Arctic. There’s a frenzy of growth and activity. Plants bloom and insects take over during that brief warm and sunny spell. Animals and migratory breeding birds take advantage of those few months. Spring and fall are mere blips on the Arctic radar.

The factbook update was a minor adjustment to the map removing some of the recent dead, I have a new template for The Map if I can get around to it, for a complete new update.
