Japerlasa wrote:I'm thinking of reinstituting welfare since there's too much unemployment. What are your opinions on welfare?

Less taxes and more freedom for market to control themself is helping the unemployment rate lower we thought.

In our opinion about welfare is the program one of very good program and needed to help poor people have a chance to competed with people who has better resource.

However in our mindset, a welfare program is for poor people. Of course it would created a jealousy among middle man. The middle man, the people whose not poor enough to get welfare and not rich enough to stand on their feet alone. When a crisis hit the economy, those people will be hitted most.

Moreover, even rich people got benefit from Government, for example taxes cut, industrial incentives, and such.

Oh man, how long have I been offline? At least my nation didn't get chucked into the trash like last time lol

The President of the SAS is going to liberalise somewhat. He's going to unban alcohol but in terms of social policies like divorce, adultery, abortion etc he isn't sure yet.

As always, remember the words of Aristotle: "Some vices miss what is right because they are deficient, others because they are excessive, in feelings or in actions, but Virtue finds and chooses the mean." Choosing the right balance point of courage is not easy. Between the deficiency that is cowardice, failing to make necessary change, and the excess that is foolhardiness, changing inappropriate things at inappropriate times, there is some middle point that is appropriate to this situation (but not necessarily appropriate to all situations).

what's that and how?

New dacia wrote:what's that and how?

The UBFA is the United Balder Football Association.
For more info:

United Balder Football Association (UBFA)

Somerset Cup

What is the (UBFA)?

The UBFA run by Kendell is an opportunity for nations of the region of Balder to put forward their national football team to compete in a friendly competition against other nations for the Somerset Cup.

How does it work?

At least 8 teams and at most 24 teams will be placed on the roster to play against other teams. The game will consist of 3 rounds:

In the first round each team will play 2 games against every team, one at home and one away. Which equals at least 14 games and at most 48 games. In the second round the 4 teams with the best records will go and play each of the other 3 teams 4 times, 2 at home and 2 away. Which equals 12 games. In the third round the 2 teams with the best records will go to the finals and will play each other in 3 games and whoever wins 2 games wins the Somerset Cup.

The first round will fully be posted two weeks in the month. The second round will be posted the next week. And the third round the last week. Games will be posted in a timely manner to where teams may collaborate with other nations to create game overviews. The finals will have a game overview written by me though the finals can be written by the finalist teams upon request.

Scores will be picked by a randomized scorinator which will be used to determine which teams won and by how much. This will be done to every game.

Records will be counted in points with wins equaling 2 point, ties equaling 1 points, and loses equaling 0 points.

What happens if there is a tie in records?

If the records of a team are tied and one team must go to the second or third round, then the teams will play one match and the team that wins will go to the determined round.

What happens if I win the UBFA Finals?

The winning team will receive a legendary trading card, the bragging rights to the Somerset Cup, and claim the title of Regional Football Champion. You are also automatically given a spot in the next months Regional Cup if you want to participate again.

Who will be hosting the UBFA Finals?

The hosting nation of the finals will be any nation that is not one of the finalists and who didn't host the past UBFA Finals. The nation will be randomly picked.

Shouldn't larger nations get an advantage?

Nations who have a population of over a billion compared to their competitor and nations who have a significantly larger economy than their competitor will receive a small winning bonus percentage, but other wise the scores are random. Random is cruel, but it is necessary.

Are their any rules that I need to know?

In terms of Roleplay they are the same to most Roleplay rules: Don't give personal information, don't post any foul language, don't spam, ect. This is required within any form of media: Discord, dispatches, Balder message board, ect.

There are prerequisites that you must meet to register: Nations may only register one team and only nations who are located in the Balder Region may register teams. To register see: When, where, and how do I sign up?

I don't know much about football, can I still participate?

Of course you can. We don't discriminate against any nation. You don't have to be an expert to enjoy the fun. You also don't have to participate directly by playing in the games to participate in the fun.

You can for example, create factbooks on how your citizens viewed the games and who they wanted to win. Nations who do directly participate in the games can work with their competitors to collaborate in a game overview or create factbooks and dispatches on their teams.

If you do however want to participate and don't know much about football see Linkthe football rules for more information. Keep in mind that we are playing football or soccer and not American Football.

When, where, and how do I sign up?

When: Registration will open when the First Round of the previous UBFA Regional Cup ends. The registration deadline will occur the first Monday of every month. Which means that the UBFA will occur every month unless something occurs on my part of which I will try to notify the teams. The current deadline is May 5th.

Where: You can sign up by just sending me a message through nationstates or discord. The registration will be first come, first served.

How: The registration must contain your team name, the city where your teams stadium is, and the name of the stadium. You may also send me the link to your team factbook which must contain the above information.

Any questions?
Please feel free to contact me/Kendell.

I have a question for all of you:
What kind of theme do you use for the Nationstates website?

If you don't know what the themes are, you go to settings and scroll down to theme.

I use the dark theme, easier on the eyes.

I use the normal theme but I also use anquity and century just to see how NationStates looks like back then.

I use my phone 99% of the time, so i don't use themes lol

Socialist arab states wrote:So...what do you think he should do? Lol

Well, there are two answers to that question.

The first answer is my dis-interested, neutral evaluation says. The second is my personally-invested, non-neutral belief says.

From a neutral standpoint, you need to carefully evaluate which things have been suppressed that should not be. Do not drag your feet about it, but do not turn on all the lights simultaneously either. I cannot teach you the wisdom you need to pick the right option. I can only point the way and support with thoughts on particular solutions.

From my personal standpoint, I am of course eager to encourage a fellow nation to give its people the freedom to choose, speak, and live as they will, because I believe that a choice only has moral weight when it is not coerced. A robot hard-wire programmed to say "ɪ ʟᴏᴠᴇ ʏᴏᴜ" does not actually have love for its creator, it simply acts exactly as it was made to. In like sense, a person forced to do a moral thing at gunpoint is not actually demonstrating moral character.

However, I do recognize that you want to preserve your culture and values, so you're looking to target the most effective things to change your position. In order, I personally (NOT my dis-interested neutral stance) recommend looking for issue responses that repeal the following policies:
1. State Press
2. Polygamy
3. Corporal Punishment
4. Permanent Marriage
5. Autocracy

Removing these policies, especially state press, polygamy, and corporal punishment, will have the greatest impact on giving your people the ability to choose how they live and on reducing state-caused injury to them. The ability to speak freely (within reason) is vital to a healthy relationship between government and governed. Corporal punishment is a permanent solution to what should be a temporary problem. And polygamy almost always results in abuse of power as one spouse controls the situation and the others are beholden to them: two-person marriage can still have unhealthy power dynamics, but it implicitly puts the partners on equal footing. (Also, as I like to joke, "there is no general solution to the three-body problem.")
