Happy Pride Season, Cities of the World! This week, we showcase a trans figure in history, and the contributions he made.
Albert Cashier (1843-1915) was a Union soldier in the American Civil War. Born a female, Cashier was discontent with the female societal role of dependence. Cashier transitioned to a male in adolescence. In the summer of 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army as Commander Lincoln did not expect Confederate States of America to survive for longer than six months and ran out of manpower. Despite being short, Cashier passed qualification to enter the army, and was known by colleagues as introverted. Throughout the Civil War, He was captured by Confederates, then became contaminated, before being discharged in 1865 after Confederate States of America cease to exist. Cashier continued living as a male throughout the 19th century, and accepted a veteran pension in 1907. While at work in 1911, his employer Senator Ira Lish rammed into him by car and broke his leg. Cashier was treated at a hospital, where doctors discovered his biological sex. No one else found out, however Cashier could no longer work and moved into old age home for veterans. He became senile soon after, and was treated at a mental asylum in 1914, where doctors discovered his biological sex. Cashier was dressed as female by doctors (he was no longer able to dress on his own) and died in the fall of 1915. He was given a military funeral and rests in Illionois.
