Alright, here comes my entry for the Flag Contest 2021:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/810521623235919932/834114810462339093/ffc21.png

A light, pretty much basic minimalistic version with white colour dominating to express Forest's neutrality & peaceful vibe with brand green stripe in the very centre of the flag to display the central (thus core) value and priority of the region. And the leaf... well, it's just the leaf-y shape that pleases my eyes, subjectively. With no intention to win; I just joined the contest to provide one more alternative version for a regional flag. I sincerely (and hungrily) hope to see deeper, more decent, and inspiringly symbolic entries from our fellow Forestians who will get that fancy champion feeling once they won.

But if you surprisingly happen to like my entry then vote for me, of course, I won't mind to experience the Champ Feelings™ too

Don't double post is a major bit of etiquette for us.

Don't spam is another one.

Generally speaking, Forest is an RMB-based region, so we prefer posts that have content or are meaningful/reflective in some way. This is hardly to say that there isn't casual chatter - of course there is. Rather, it isn't unusual to find multiple semi-academic conversations going on at once, interspersed with long-form government messages and important info. Forest is its RMB above all else, so we try to treat it as such.

I tried to remain close to the current design, as I felt it would be fitting in light of the choice not to refound Forest. We are still the same, but changed. As such, I felt it would be appropriate to reflect that in the flag's design.

The white divided in two parts is meant to reflect the partitioning of colours in the current flag. I also chose to keep the spruces, but chose for a design that is closer together. Because I feel that the changes that Forest goes through will bring its members closer together, and that the newfound closeness should be reflected in the flag.

It may not be the most original design, that I recognise, but hopefully it will remind people of the current design :)

Don't forget that the rules of the contest mean that you can submit more than one entry. So if you do want to have the most original design, by all means you are still entitled to 2 more cracks at it.
EDIT: Just got reminded of the rules. You may now pillory me for my shame.

Hello! Nice to meet you. I used to be Forest Ambassador to TRR many years ago funnily enough, spent many a day grumbling there after failed raids. How is the Earth day event preparations going?

Terrabod wrote:At the bottom of the Flag Contest dispatch there's a note that the creator of the winning design (whatever that is) might be commissioned to produce seasonal or event-specific variants of their flag. My question to you folks is this: what kind of special occasion flags would you like to see? I'm thinking a spoopy Z-day version, maybe a version to celebrate his lordship Chan Island's inevitable re-election...

I approve of this proposed variant, and endorse efforts to make one for all submissions and the old flag already in preparation!

Also... I generally have the mind that we would do well with all of the site-wide games having a variant (N-Day, Z-Day and April 1st), as that is something that anyone logging in on those days will notice. Apart from that Christmas, Earth Day (which is coming very soon, I know), New Years and Founder's Day will be well appreciated. Other religious holiday variants such as Ramadan, Yom Kippur, Holi, etc could also be a nice touch.

All together that could mean as many as 20-30 days per year depending on how we interpret them using some kind of alternative flag.... which I am actually rather happy with the prospect of. Mixes things up, keeps things interesting, encourages everyone to celebrate. Nothing that doesn't bring a smile to my face there.

It's going well! Our culture officer has been doing some preparation, and by the looks of things, we're doing an event with you and other regions.

When someone utters the sentence "I didn't know that" as an excuse for being completely ignorant or incompetent occasionally I can't help but throw in a "I'm pretty sure I could write a book about what you don't know" as sarcastic commentary. Greetings, fellow citizens.

I have submitted my entry for the Forest Flag Contest 2021, and hope you will give it your consideration in the voting that comes.

To see the flag, and understand its intentions, please see this dispatch:

Forest Flag Contest Submission
"The Heart of the Forest"

My submission for Forest Flag Contest 2021 takes classic themes from Mount Seymour's beautiful design, and seeks to update them for our modern region. It is designed in accordance with The Five Principles recognized by vexillologists around the world, drawn from Ted Kaye's Good Flag, Bad Flag:

1) Keep It Simple

A good flag is a straight-forward design, easily remembered, and easily rendered. Excessive complication distracts from the purpose, and conveys a sense of scattered thoughts or "design by committee." Two equal stripes are surmounted by a central circular pattern rendered in inverse colors. A simple tree of geometric shapes provides focus without distraction.

2) Use Meaningful Symbolism

"We are the trees that grow, not the leaves that blow." The tree has long been the symbol of Forest, and not just any tree - an evergreen that thrives in all seasons, as we ourselves hope to do. Placed in the center of the flag, the forest lives in the heart of our region, much as it lives in our hearts as citizens: players who share concern for the environment. The tree is surrounded by a circle, representing both the circle of protection we seek to offer to the natural world, and the unbroken and everlasting nature of the circle of life. Two bands, the green of the environment and the white of our pure intentions, are penetrated by tendrils of each other's color - the environment's green meanders through our life, and our life's actions trace their way through the environment.

3) Use 2 or 3 Basic Colors

Green and white have long been the colors of our region, and are in use on all our symbols. Just as a tree may grow and thrive even after a forest fire has swept the land, somewhat altered but still the same tree, so too can our colors thrive after the fire of our Founder's CTE has swept through, giving the region the opportunity for new growth.

4) No Lettering or Seals

Related heavily to the simplicity demanded by Rule 1, we have no need of complicated patterns and the artifice of man. Simple, natural shapes communicate our message more clearly than any words or crest could manage.

5) Be Distinctive, Be Related

This flag recalls basic geometries of many classic flags in influential regions, but features a uniqueness that speaks to Forest. It is instantly recognizable as the emblem of our environmentally-motivated region, both by its colors and patterns, for those long familiar with us, but even to those who have never seen it before.

-------------

This flag, quite obviously, draws heavily from Mount Seymour's longstanding regional flag, and the bulk of the design credit should therefore go to him. I merely worked from the outstanding flag he had already created, in order to create a modified symbol for our modified, but not wholly different, region.

After considering both the designs I made for the contest, I decided to change my submission for the more original/elaborate one I composed: https://m.imgur.com/a/K3Ram2A

Naturally, Forest's colours in this one are preserved, with the green being the most prominent one, as it is at the core of this region's identity, I believe. The white is naturally reflected in the middle partition, but I added a golden colour to the flag. I felt that, seeing from dispatches and such, the many years that Forest has existed, it deserves a golden edging in its flag, to reflect all the golden years of the past, and surely those of the future :)

I also chose for a more elaborate tree design in this flag, as I feel it would be representative of the growth that Forest went through. The growth is also meant to be represented by a much more significant depiction of the roots, which reflects the region being rooted in its identity, but allowing it to grow significantly as time goes by. The circle itself that the tree flows from and into is meant to represent the unity and continuity of the region.

So, yeah, apologies for the change, but of the two designs I made this one was my favourite, so I decided to share this one for the contest after all :)

Here are some flag design ideas from me:

None are final submissions yet. In the end, I'm probably most likely to submit one of the "renovated" current flags, but if people really like one of the actual redesigns, I'm happy to submit that instead.

A bit about each of the ideas:

The "renovated" current flags are just minor updates of what we have right now. When I created our current flag back in 2016, I didn't have any downloaded graphics software. As I recall, I made the flag in a vector-editor web tool that may not even exist anymore. The tool didn't have snapping or alignment functions, so I basically just eyeballed everything. As a result, if you look very closely, you may notice that some corners don't exactly meet up and some elements aren't quite centered. I wanted to fix these errors in a renovated design.

I also wanted to incorporate the style of the new Forest logo that I had recently created for an update of the regional dispatches and forum (you can see it in action at the top of the Flag Contest dispatch, as a matter of fact). It's based on the current flag -- for example, the trees are the same dimensions and proportions -- but everything is a little more rounded and smooth, less "chunky". I think it looks both a bit more elegant and a bit more friendly.

I couldn't decide whether white or tan looked better on these flags. White is, of course, the color on the current flag, and it feels more "normal". But I really like the slightly folksy, natural-ish tan. It sort of feels like the flag was carved out of wood, or has been flying in front of someone's backwoods cabin for fifteen years. :) The tan is also part of the cleaned-up color palette that I've been trying to work into the dispatches and forum -- see here for more info:

I'd love to hear what you all think about 1) whether you like the renovated designs (especially the roundedness) at all, and 2) whether you think white or tan looks better.

Secondly, the actual redesigns are ideas I came across while dithering around in the Forest file that I actually like somewhat and could imagine as the regional flag. While I used a spaced-out and slightly thinned variant of the logo for the "renovated" flags in order to copy the look of the current flag, for these complete redesigns I used the logo pretty much intact. I think the logo works well as a charge in general. I think my favorite of these redesigns might be the one in the top left, which introduces the dark brown stripe as a representation of our "grounding" -- in the nurturing soil, in our history, in being "down-to-earth", and so on. Again, these are all colors taken from the cleaned-up palette I posted above. I'd be interested to hear whether you all like any of these redesigns, and/or whether you have any suggestions for how to improve them.

Finally, the bad ideas that might be inspiration for others are, well, bad ideas that might be inspiration for others. I thought I had a cool concept, but they didn't really pan out. Both are too "different" for me to really like them. That said, they might spark ideas for others, so I figured there was no harm in uploading them.

Anyone who'd like to use any bit of my files to incorporate into their own design is welcome to. Just send me a telegram and I'll send you back a vector file with everything in it. I can also paste the hex codes for the colors in the color palette, if those would be helpful, as well as a high-res version of the dispatch/forum logo-thing.

I'm less interested in competing in this contest (perhaps because I've already had the experience of seeing my design flying over Forest, heh) than I am in helping out others on their designs and making sure all the final products are wonderful flags. In the end, I'll probably use my one submission slot to send in whatever people seem to most want that hasn't been submitted yet, whether that's one of the versions in the dispatch above or something I haven't even thought of yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: I just saw VH's flag, and I really like it. Reminds me of the anarchist circle-A symbol or the XR extinction symbol. Makes me feel vaguely rebellious, like I'm part of some clandestine deep-ecology tree cult. ^_^ I have to say I prefer designs that use multiple trees instead of just one tree, because the former inherently represents that we, like a real forest, are a community. But perhaps the circle represents that well too. Overall a solid -- and nicely simple -- design!

I really like your renovations! I prefer the white over the tan myself, the cleaner look just feels more... official, I guess? I don't know. I personally would be happy with having whatever won the flag contest go up against your renovated flag, because it feels like it would represent a new beginning for Forest without giving up the current design.

As for the redesigns, I quite like all of them, though the gradient design (bottom right) less so. I think it's just too much green with no other colour to balance it out. My favourite would also have to be the one with the brown stripe (top left). Not sure why, but there you go.

EDIT: You know, I wish I could design a flag. I had a brief go earlier, but nothing I can come up with feels worthy of submission. It doesn't help that my one tool I know how to use is MS Paint...

The top left redesign has to be my favorite! I don't know why, but I have a knack for flags that represent the geographical traits of a nation/region, especially when it's very simple (e.g. Japanese prefectural style). I'd even go as far as to have it on my wall; they're just that aesthetically pleasing. Too bad I don't have my own room...

I prefer the tan over white, but I don't think it should be used... outside the green if that makes sense? I like it as an outline for the trees, just not as the top half of the flag. I hope that makes sense (if it doesn't I'm sorry -_-)

Of course, I'm pleased with whatever flag wins the contest, though I'm new so it doesn't feel right for me to be saying that lol.

Woohoo! I've been waiting for this day all year. Personally, it's one of my favourite holidays. It's ironic how on the day we're supposed to be celebrating the environment there is literal snow in my driveway......

Mother Earth's Plantasia - Mort Garson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZkR3PyHTs0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Earth%27s_Plantasia

A 1976 electronic passion project by a Julliard-trained session musician, New Age Occultist, and all-around weirdo, named Mort Garson. "Warm Earth music for plants and the people who love them." Meant to be played to your actual plants.

I don't often listen to electronic music, but this is actually quite melodic and pleasant. At times reminds me of The Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed," combined with a sort of Easy Listening vibe. Very '70s. The first song, "Plantasia," has actually grown on me (if you'll excuse the pun), and I find myself returning to it. The rest of the album is more suited to background music, in my opinion.

Is the part in the summary about how your income is distributed 'extremely evenly' calculated by the number itself? I'm asking because my bottom 10% income is 34,000 and my top 10% income is 57,000 and that's not really 'even', is it?

An income disparity less than double between top and bottom deciles is remarkably even! In many nations, real and game, that number is many times that. In the United States, the top ten percent of households make around 14 times the bottom ten percent of households. In the UK, the number is around 12 times. Even in Norway, the top decile has 3 times the income of the bottom deciles (if I read their chart correctly). Yours is just 1.67 - parity unheard of in the developed western world.
