Here's my design for the new forest flag:

The existence of the stars symbolises how we should look to the future into this new age of forest, and each star represents one of the 10 forest cabinets, with their placement in order from left to right, earliest to current, and each point on each star represents a member of that cabinet.

The expanded number of trees symbolises that while forest's population may grow, our goals will stay the same.
and it keeps the original colour palette form the current flag apart from the bands at the bottom.

Hey everyone,

I'd like to mention that today is the Dies Natalis, the Day of Birth for the city of Rome, the Eternal City. The Romans always maintained that the city was founded on April 21st by Romulus, and although the year is disputed, what we would call 753 BC is the most commonly accepted year.

So today, the City of Rome celebrates the beginning of its 2774th year!!! The Romans had celebrations for it in ancient times, and it has been built into some prominent architecture, such as the Pantheon. On this day, at noon, the sun shines through the oculus in the dome (the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world to this day, by the way) and lands directly on the door to the temple. Imagine the emperor coming through the doors in a shaft of sunlight into the otherwise dimly-lit temple to celebrate the birthday of the city, the state, and the entire civilization.

Here's a cool little video of that happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGBWgkuvqlc

---

Also, in regard to Chan island's idea of special use flags for a larger number of holidays, I would suggest having four flags for the Winter and Summer Solstices, along with the Spring and Fall Equinoxes (or since today is Rome's day, the Hibernal & Aestival Solstices, and the Vernal & Autumnal Equinoxes, if you like!). They'd be easy to make, because they could just be season-themed, or else simply play with the brightness or darkness of the flag in some way. But regardless of how they are done, the solstices and equinoxes are much more important than many people realize, because they mark the physical changes in the orbit of the Earth that drive the timing and symbolism of many of the other holidays and festivals.

If the special use flags only fly for one day each, we could in theory develop a beautiful repertoire of perhaps dozens of flags, and we could have a fantastic dispatch or something where they are all displayed in a gallery so that everyone can appreciate them. It could become one of our defining features as a region.

Also: I love many of the new flags proposals that I've seen so far! Whether we stick with the old flag or choose a new design, this is showcasing a very high level of talent and dedication in the regional community. I must admit that at first, I was skeptical that I would vote for a new design, but having seen the submissions, there are a number that will compete for my vote with the original. Time will tell!

Take Five in 5/4 and Blue Rondo ala Turk in 9/8.

The 12/8 System of a Down was Toxicity, and the 5/4 Gershwin was a bit of a trick, just a short portion of interlude as part of Porgy and Bess, the majority of which is 4/4.

Meet Me Inside was the 7/8, you're right. I'm always on the look out for more rap with unusual time signatures if anyone knows any.

Agree that Take Five is just amazing. That was probably my introduction to unusual time signatures, as a kid.

Oh man, it's been 26 years since I saw that show, and I was in the midst of coming down with something horribly unpleasant that got worse as we watched (I'd been to a sleepover the previous night, and caught something from one of the other kids). Even so, I remember it pretty well - first opera I ever saw live - a whole style and presentation and richness that set it apart from other classical music, stage musicals, etc. Summertime continues to be a favorite.

Damn, I really like your redesigns. One of my submissions is actually fairly similar to your bottom-left "bad idea"

I'm also really excited to finally get done with the visual revamp now! I've already corrected the stuff I had to be on the new standard pallete, I think forest will look really nice with a bit more of a consistent look to complement the new flag

Long Live Earth, indeed! It is my hope that humanity will come to its senses and stop destroying our Mother like it does now.

"Happy" (?) Earth Day! May humanity voluntarily decrease its impact, its consumption, and its numbers, so that the natural world can create a new equilibrium. Let us decrease, so that the Earth may increase.

Virtually every gauge and warning light is flashing red, and the sirens are wailing. Now is the time for sober realism, and for a cold, logical appraisal of the situation. The time is very short, if it exists at all. Yet, the imperative remains to do everything we can. Collectively, the systems of our civilization need to change, in many cases radically so. Individually, we have to question whether we have children, and how many. Lifestyle changes are also important, to a lesser degree. And whatever natural places still exist, whatever plants and animals still live must be prioritized and conserved, and kept in whatever integrity that they still have.

The natural world is neither for the wealthy, or for corporations. It's not for "all of us," and it's not for you or for me. It's time to consider that the natural world exists for its own sake, and that it would be no less valuable if there were no humans left at all. The birds, trees, mammals, coral reefs, riparian ecosystems, swamps, glaciers, and deserts all exist as worthy and good in themselves, and we have to recognize that we don't have some absolute right to exploit or destroy them, or even to preserve them "for everyone" or "for future generations." They are sufficient in themselves, and they don't need us. We need all of them. The natural world is on top, and we disregard that at our own peril and to our own demise.

The only thing "wrong" with the planet is us: our values, our civilization, our consumption of energy and resources, and our sheer numbers. Let's realize the immense power that each of us holds in determining a fractional part of the future for life on Earth, and to prioritize everything else above ourselves.

Then we will have a truly Happy Earth Day, someday.

It’s important to always remember that humanity is part of the natural world, not the way around. With this illusion of humanity conquered and dominated the planet everything can be easily rolled back by this very planet. We are part of the nature and we have to treat it as such, as if it was us ourselves 🍂 🍃🍁

Well said! I entirely agree. Setting ourselves up as something eternal to the natural world is what has ultimately caused all of our problems.

(Also: I decided to take the plunge and to ban guns among our civilian population! Civil Rights have taken a bit of a hit, but I hope that I can recover that in other ways. But that's dropped Ruinenlust's weaponization to nearly zero, I think. Hopefully crime also comes down...)

Happy Earth Day Forest! Sadly, no Earth Day protests this year, which I was planning on participating in (COVID is seriously out of control in Canada), but I will continue to participate in activities. And remember, every day is Earth Day, because every day we should give our planet the respect it deserves.

Happy Earth Day!

It's 2 weeks to election day in Scotland, where we have a proportional voting system that involves 2 ballot papers. I was talking to a 17 year old guy in the final year of school and he told me he doesn't know anyone among his peers who isn't planning to vote Green on the second ballot (the only one they're on in most locations). So while it's exasperating that the UK government is still granting new licences for oil exploration and even planning a new coal mine, I guess young people are the hope for the future. It's just that there isn't really enough time left to wait for them to be in charge...

My depression has been pretty savage the past few days, so by way of what a therapist called "behavioural activation" I've been digging out a pool in the burn behind my house. Last year a neighbour put cattle around the burn a little higher up and the result was algal bloom that pretty much choked up the whole thing. At least for the moment it looks and sounds much better, and this morning I saw a snipe dabbling around in it and a fish for the first time in ages. I try to find positives in small things at a time when the big picture can seem unremittingly bleak.

Re what Mount Seymour was saying about flag designs, I appreciate that a forest has to be multiple trees but I'm open to the single tree designs. The current flag has very clean design and its trees clearly have to be identical, but trees aren't identical and the result reminds me a little of those chains of people you make by cutting folded paper. I like the rounding as a way of making things a little less geometric, and I prefer the white to the tan, which looks like a fashionable colour for an Air BnB apartment wall. White has a nice symbolism too.

Joke for Ruinenlust - a Latin teacher walks into a bar and order a Martinus. The barman asks him whether he means a Martini. "Look," he replies, "if I wanted a double I'd have asked for one."

Digging pools...

Joke for Ruinenlust - a Latin teacher walks into a bar and order a Martinus. The barman asks him whether he means a Martini. "Look," he replies, "if I wanted a double I'd have asked for one."

That's a great joke. One of my students last year sent me one of those picture/meme things. The caption said something to the effect that, "My Latin teacher said that the best way to learn a language is to speak with the natives," and picture was of a guy at a bus stop talking with someone who was dressed up like the Grim Reaper or a Nazgul from Lord of the Rings.

Also, digging pools is wonderful! We have a little ditch thing in one part of the woods that never runs dry, so in the fall, I dug out a pool about 2 meters by 2 meters, and perhaps a foot deep. My idea is for it to become a place for the salamanders and frogs that live in the woods. Happily I encountered no roots while digging, because they make it much harder. But it's all shale and cinders from over a century ago, when there used to be a railroad for the coal mines which have long since closed. There's something wonderful about working with water.

And yes: when I look at my students, I see the future. Young people give me hope. They are so much attuned to things that intelligent old people never seem to have learned, and they are intuitively in alignment with the right side of many things. I keep telling them [when it would naturally come up, not out of context] that they have to register to vote, and that they have to vote every single time. Even in the sh!tty local elections in the "off years," like the odd-numbered years in the US.

Trees are so tempting, and they always seem like a good expenditure of money. I have to put a screen around every damn tree that I plant, because we have an overpopulation of deer, and because the wolves and mountain lions are extinct, and the bears are sadly hunted, but it's still worth it. This year, I got two dozen Red Spruce trees, and two dozen White Pine trees. My goal is always to add native species into the woods that are not locally present anymore, so that they create a small population that will eventually seed themselves, in the future. Trees are always "worth it," to me.
