There's something about the winnie the pooh stories, too...I wonder if they could have chosen another subject matter for their song and still managed to have had the same impact? It seems like the perfect fit.

In general, I am attracted to music that provokes that sense of "happy sadness" (there's probably a better word for that), and more often than not, it involves themes around aging and remembering the past. Can anyone think of other examples?

"When I was seventeen, it was a very good year...." etc.

"I did it my way...." etc.

"When you and I were young, Maggie..."

"Believe me if all those endearing young charms...."etc.

I wandered today to the hills Maggie
To watch the scene below
The creek and the old rusty mill Maggie
Where we sat in a long time ago
The green grove is gone from the hills Maggie
Where first the daisies sprung
The old rusty mill is still Maggie
Since you and I were young
Oh they say that I'm feeble with age Maggie
My steps are much slower than then.
My face is a well written page Maggie
And time all alone was the pen
Oh they say we are aged and gray, Maggie
A spray as the white breakers flung.
But to me, you're as fair as you were, Maggie,
When you and I were young.
And now were are aged and gray, Maggie,
The trials of life nearly done.
Let us sing of the days that are gone, Maggie,
When you and I were young.

Believe me, if all those endearing young charms,
Which I gaze on so fondly today
Were to fade by tomorrow and fleet in my arms
Like fairy gifts fading away,
Thou would still be adored as this moment thou art,
Let thy loveliness fade as it will,
And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart
Would entwine itself verdantly still.

It is not while beauty and youth are thine own
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear,
That the fervor and faith of a soul can be known,
To which time will but make thee more dear.
No, the heart that has truly loved never forgets,
And as truly loves on to the close.
As the sunflower turns on her God when He sets,
The same look which she gave when He rose.

Ah yes, that one does always get me...

I hadn't heard that one before, but that was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing.

I really like that one line, especially. Reminds me of something Leonard Cohen might've written.

That's some very nice imagery. I was also unfamiliar with this, but it's very beautiful. I looked it up, and wikipedia tells a story of the poet Thomas Moore writing the song for his wife after she contracted smallpox and was left with bad scars from the illness.

I always find this song touching:

Levon Helm - The Mountain
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpkGeUn69S0

I was born on this mountain a long long time ago
Before they knocked down the timber, and they strip-mined all the coal

....

I was born on this mountain, this mountain's my home
She holds me and she keeps me from worry and woe
Well, they took everything she gave - she gave and now she's gone
But I'll die on this mountain, this mountain's my home.

I was young on this mountain but now I am old
And I knew every holler, every cool swimmin' hole
'Til one night I lay down and I woke up to find
That my childhood was over, I went back down in the mine.

Sleeping at Last's Saturn is another such song. As is Satellite Call by Sara Bareilles.

Wow. That was extremely powerful. Hadn't heard of this group before, thanks. There's so much amazing music out there that I do not know about...I fear I will never hear it all.

She has a beautiful voice. Looked her up, seems like she's a pretty big star. Wasn't aware of her, though.

Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - The Copper Top

Aidan Moffat is a Scottish musician. I don't know exactly how to describe him, but he's made lots of different types of music. This is off of Everything's Getting Older (2011). I highly recommend the album, though it's a bit weird.

That is a new one for me. Thank you.

I tear up nearly every time. A few years ago, my wife and I rebuilt after a devastating flood. We heard this song for the first time as we neared completion of the restoration. It was so powerful ...

We will call this place our home
The dirt in which our roots may grow
Though the storms will push and pull
We will call this place our home
We'll tell our stories on these walls.
Every year, measure how tall
And just like a work of art
We'll tell our stories on these walls
Let the years we're here be kind, be kind
Let our hearts, like doors, open wide, open wide
Settle our bones like wood over time, over time
Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine
A little broken, a little new.
We are the impact and the glue
Capable more than we know
To call this fixer upper home
With each year, our color fades
Slowly, our paint chips away
But we will find the strength
And the nerve it takes
To repaint and repaint and repaint every day
Let the years we're here be kind, be kind
Let our hearts, like doors, open wide, open wide
Settle our bones like wood over time, over time
Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine
Let the years we're here be kind, be kind
Let our hearts, like doors, open wide, open wide
Settle our bones like wood over time, over time
Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine
Give us bread, give us salt, give us wine
Smaller than dust on this map
Lies the greatest thing we have
The dirt in which our roots may grow
And the right to call it home

The vid ends a bit abruptly... but, honestly, by the time it is ending, I am deep in a melancholy of Love and Memory.

Geez...who is this guy? Incredible voice, and music, and lyrics. Especially his voice, there's so much emotion in it. I'm going to need to really delve deeper.

I can easily see how the song would have made such an impression at a time like that. The lyrics seem custom written for your experience. But then, like the best lyrics, they're also so universal that they seem to perfectly fit any number of experiences.

He's quite talented, those lyrics are very moving. Thank you for introducing me to this guy.

For some reason, the song put me in mind of one I return to again and again:

Ludovico Einaudi - Primavera

It's instrumental, but so powerful, I often just have to stop what I'm doing to listen. Puts me in a very introspective mood.

YES! This is one of those pieces that cycle through my Pandora feed. I created a "Sleeping at Last" channel and, over the past two years, a number of fabulous selections have been added that I blanket-term "Mindfull Music".

Ah, "mindful" is a good name for such music. It's how I feel when I listen to, say, Van Morrison's album Astral Weeks.

I don't use any of the streaming music services (like Pandora) but I really should, as it seems like there's a lot of great music to be found. Weirdly, I discover most music now on youtube. It's a strange feeling to not be relying on one's personal collection of CDs and tapes in order to listen to music...

Hyakkei - Okurimono

I don't know much about this Japanese group, but they make beautiful albums. No vocals, just lush musical landscapes. I often will let their albums play right on through and start again, multiple times, while barely noticing.

Much as I hate to leave, we must continue our journey. Thanks, Christopher Robin, for a most welcome respite.

Time to roll on. Adios Amigo's.

I have enjoyed my visit to this region very very much. Thank you Christopher Robin.

Alas ... it is time to move along.

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”

Thank you for the hospitality, but a drifter must drift!

Ah, you are very kind to say. I greatly enjoyed having your company in my sleepy little region. Stop by anytime.

And stay safe out there!

There's something familiar about this poem, but I can't quite put my finger on it... :P
