For me, I dislike it when there's copious amounts of useless zippers. It just irritates me.

Question of the Day:

What are some of your favourite magic/superpower systems in fiction?

Tethys 13 wrote:The first that springs to mind is Nen from Hunter x Hunter, widely considered one of the best power systems in fiction for very good reasons, with plenty of room for individuality to thrive while still making sense within the broader structure.
Allomancy from the Mistborn novels deserves a mention, which I love for being founded on clear and well thought-out rules but with the bias of their creator playing a part in 'breaking' them to advance the characters' understanding of the world.
The scientific and magical powers of A Certain Magical Index and its spinoffs are particularly enjoyable as well, I adore how they take a straightforward concept and then see what can be done with it - an electromancer who can use electromagnetism to manipulate iron sand, cling to metal, or fire railguns, an amazing villain who is nigh invincible thanks to his ability to manipulate any vector he comes into contact with, making him able to do things like punch someone while effectively negating Newton's third law so that he is unharmed while they take double the force, etcetera, but with logical weaknesses (he could survive the blast of a huge explosion, but might suffocate if it pollutes the air around him too much). Then there is the magical side, where it is all about symbolism (partially inspiring my own nation's powers) - one character can substitute themselves for God in the divine law 'one must not hold any ill will towards God or divine punishment shall fall upon them', and then anyone who feels ill will towards them becomes unable to breathe.
Devil Fruits from One Piece are similar in their imaginative use of a simple concept, and are just so much fun.

One of my favorite magic/superpower systems in fiction would probably have to be Cursed Energy from Jujutsu Kaizen, I feel like it gives every character in the story a unique ability set to their traits and personality, and the fact it thrives off of negative emotions just makes it cooler. I also like that some of the techniques can be inherited or passed down, giving a sort of history to each one. Domains are based on the user's personality, so I'm a big fan of that too.

Fallout. You may think there is none, but 1.ghoulification. If you get too heavily irradiated some die, some go ghoul. You look like a zombie, heal from radiation, and do not age as fast, some even still alive from pre-war. There are some disadvantages however, like the fact that your skin and hair will often fall off, along with nausea at first. Additionally, you may go feral, losing most mental faculties and attacking everything that is not a ghoul.
2. FEV. FEV is a pre war government made virus, depending on the strain it will do different stuff, most kill you but the most well known are the types that, if you take a dip, you become a super mutant, becoming stronger and bigger and greener. However, you will often lose your memories and become really, reeeeeaaaaaly dumb and violent.

We talking about fictional superpowers? The Combine from Half-Life 2.

The divine brewing and healing prowess of figures like Šiduri, Ninkasi, and -- most relevant to this region -- Nephthys. I think our regional superhero should be a celestial alewife and apothecary, capable of conjuring wildly delicious and intoxicating beverages, along with powerful entheogenic concoctions, that can subdue all foes into a blissful state of heightened awareness and receptivity.

Honestly you had me at “celestial alewife”

Women not having pockets on their pants, I don't know why. The amount of times I had to hold stuff because the majority of my sister's pants are pocketless is killing me. Give my gals some big ol' pockets as well. I can't imagine going one day without slipping my phone into my shorts or pants. It's not technically a fashion trend, but by now it seems like it is. And has been for a while.

Not specifically much of a system or really pointing at a specific show but I like when shows can write in characters or the average citizen in a society that doesn't have superpowers in a superpowered world. Honestly, it's interesting hearing the perspective of someone and how they live being the majority or minority in a world where they could most likely die to a mutant monster next door every day. Since a lot of shows just pass over the everyday life of a civilian and focus more on superheroes, If you want a cool superhero system. including people who aren't super into the system dynamic makes it much more interesting in my opinion.

Osiris Superhero Creation

The first poll has finished, with Divinity as the clear winner for the basis of the hero's power! The new poll is up to decide the hero's predisposition - do they fight crime with pure intellect? Are foes laid low by combined might and agility? Or do bad things just spontaneously happen to our hero's enemies, while they themselves are not actually particularly effective at action? Decide!

While it took a while to think, In all honesty, Brains seemed like the only and ideal way of fighting, As Gub Kur Gana Dadag said. Making potions seems like something that this Divine god would do (Despite gods being portrayed as being extremely strong, I feel like gods would be focused on more staying back and letting others do their job for em) And going with Orisis and the death obsession I feel like I can see this divine entity being a necromancer that mainly focuses on staying behind and allowing their creations to fight while also creating potions to help their allies or fight against the enemy is perfect. Being a necromancer might make them sound more like a supervillain than a hero but Orisis is just known for that and hey, nobody said this superhero could be molded into a villain.

Thank you my friend. If you find yourself wanting any additional inspiration for the work-in-progress regional superhero, shoot me a PM any time. Antiquity and mythology are my bread and butter.

Can someone guide me to a good resource for lore/world building for my nation?

Valorota wrote:Can someone guide me to a good resource for lore/world-building for my nation?

Well, it depends on your nation and whether it's a medieval nation or a more modern one. Or even fantasy, either way, some of the best ways you can world on world building is first learning about history first (I know it sounds boring) but watching videos perhaps about certain countries you want your nation to be similar to. Learning how they work and certain cultures that you can get inspired by and learn how to build off the almost endless cultures and ideals we have in our own world is the best for worldbuilding in my opinion. The best way to figure out your nation is to look out the window. (Also if you are looking for some actual resources on Worldbuilding and perhaps writing advice, Terrible Writing Advice has a worldbuilding video and can tell you things you probably shouldn't do. Honestly helped scrub out some of my bad writing)
