Here is my present knowledge of German music: Brahms, Wagner, Rammstein, Marlene Dietrich, "O Tannenbaum" and Krautrock. Does Hüsker Dü count? They use umlauts in their name, so... Oh right, and mustn't forget Milli Vanilli

Recommendations welcome :)

A Down and Dusky Blonde is the true Lost Empress of Japan. Forced to flee intrigue and a coming coup from her own court, she hopped a junk to mainland China. From there, she was captured by pirates. However, proving her prowess, she would eventually rise to the status of "Pirate Queen," becoming the terror of the seas for the navies of the British Empire, Portuguese merchants, and the Qing Dynasty. Eventually, the King of Atlantis himself recognized her superiority on the high seas -- officially ceding to her the ocean surface as her own domain, as well as proffering a marriage proposal. Spurning the Atlantean's offer in favor of High Adventure, it is said that she yet sails those seven seas, her queenly rule on Ocean's Back undisputed among Man's navies and Merfolk, alike. But it is said, too, in lower tones, that one day she will return to those Isles of Nippon as a conquering hero, visiting justice upon the descendants of those who wronged her, as well as leading Japan into a new era of greatness...some whisper in even lower registers that this dawning of a new Japanese era heralds this occasion...

...I knew that...

I’ve been a fan of Rammstein for a long time. I started listening to Eisbrecher a few years ago. They are my favourite German band, although I still like Rammstein. I like the odd Kraftwerk track, the ones that aren’t 47 minutes long. Falco, though Austrian was good as well.

A few songs I recommend by Eisbrecher -

Eisbar, Automat, Unschuldsengel, Eiskalt erwischt and Phosphor.

Tangerine Dream! One of the greatest, if not the greatest, electronic rock bands.

I also kind of like Popol Vuh.

Abalone and naido

Did I ever tell you that Sayabara was given a marriage proposal once?

Well, A long time ago Sayabara met a very militaristic-dictatorship, and that country really seemed to like her. But she knew better. He just wanted to absorb her into his own nation, and then leave her all alone. He tried the same with many more nations. She was devastated after finding out and spent a long time feeling depressed. Thats the reason why it takes her so long to form friendships or relationships with others.

The 2 songs that come to mind when I hear “German songs” are Major Tom - Völlig losgelöst and 99 Luftballons.

Groovy. Thanks for the suggestions for other Eisbrecher songs, I'll give them a spin.

I'd not heard of Falco before. At first, I wasn't feeling the song you linked, but as it went on, I really began to dig it. I think the video helped convey the humor present in it. And just what the heck is going on it that video, anyway? It's nuts. I guess the title translates to "Blood Sausage" or something? That's a food I've had the pleasure to enjoy on numerous occasions.

Oh right, Tangerine Dream. I knew they were some sort of European, but not German. Not a lot of vocals present to give it away, if I recall... :P

I didn't know about Popul Vuh, but looking them up, I know some of the Werner Herzog films they've written scores for: "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and "Nosferatu." And I can definitely recall the feeling of those scores.

Ah yes, how could I have forgotten "99 Luftballons"? Such a classic. As a kid, my introduction was the 90's pop punk cover by Goldfinger, a band I was into in my youth:

I've definitely heard that "Major Tom" song many times before, but didn't know who did it. I believe it gets used in movies, too. It's really interesting, at various points floaty and bouncy and cool and sweet. Interesting band. Is it a reference to Bowie's "Space Oddity" (ground control to major tom)?

His big hit was Rock Me Amadeus. His other song I like is Der Kommissar. And the title means Viennese Blood, he stole the name from the classical tune.

It’s made by Peter Schilling, and like 99 Luftballons, it’s popularity caused it to get an English translation as linked below.

It is indeed inspired by David Bowie’s character Major Tom from Space Oddity.

Oh right, of course, I know those songs. Wow, this guy really embraced the 80s hard. The videos are an amazing slice of that time. The songs are incredibly catchy tunes, though. He's a good songwriter.

"Viennese Blood," huh? Well, I was quite off. Although, looking up the etymology, I see that in German the word "Wiener" can refer either to the city of Vienna or as shorthand for the sausage, as they came from Vienna. Very interesting. I was not aware that the German name of Vienna is "Wien." It's almost as though "Wiener Blut" can have a double meaning.

Norgiestoileckylockj wrote:It is indeed inspired by David Bowie’s character Major Tom from Space Oddity.

That's pretty cool. I like the idea of continuing the story of a character from a song much earlier. I would also like an update on how "Piano Man" is doing.

Now, I may not have a flux capacitor, myself. But, let's just say, I know a guy who knows a guy, if you catch my drift. Something could probably be arranged.

But, more importantly, what sort of lost texts do you have? I'm very interested in texts from the Archaic Period of ancient Greece, lost dramas, copies of lost epics attributed to Homer, and especially a copy of the "Titanomachy."

Rammstein songs are full of double meanings. Du Hast and Mann Gegen Mann being examples. I think German is a more flexible language than people realise. 🇩🇪

A tad, but not enough to totally immerse my self there. I almost went to Japan to teach english after I graduated Uni. I fell in love with Japan from the first time that I saw The Seven Samurai and other Kurosawa films.

Yeah, I think you're probably right about that. I've had similar hunches. And then there's the way that extremely complex sentiments can be mashed together into single words...seems like a fascinating language. English may be more practical, but German seems more fun.

Thank you so very much for this display of generosity. That you would bestow such a national treasure upon us is a true sign of character, and we hope, with our words, to relay how much it means to us. But let our actions speak where words may fail. May your household find health, and your republic longevity.
