It was exhilarating, almost unbearable, and as she looked about wildly, she could see her aunt smiling wolfishly. So this was combat, this was victory! It was enough to make one drunk. All that she had to do now was finish this man. With a slash, she brought her long, elegant blade down, aiming it right at his neck. She realized she was laughing now, and it sounded harsh and cruel to her own ears.
He was looking at her now, and she raised her blade back, preparing to strike. It would be so easy, to bring the blade through tender muscles and tendons, to sever his head from his body and claim her victory. In the second before the preparation and the strike, her eyes caught on something. Her aunt, who quavered, a nightmarish smile on her face and delight in her eyes. In that moment, one thing became clear, to strike would be to condemn herself, as the rest of her family had done, to insanity, gambling away empire and life for this thrill. She couldn't let that happen, not today.
She slowly lowered her blade, tip shaking. She felt terribly tired now, she was dizzy, and her head throbbed with a dull pain. "This duel is over." She managed, before her knees gave out, and she sank to the ground.
