So. I'm still on my retirement but, seeing as at this point I'm told I'm supposed to be an art historian, welcome to my textwall. Also this took forever to write, I swear the conversation was only half an hour ago when I started.
I've been thinking about the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century a fair bit recently, and how it might be relevant to the current AI Art hellscape. Disclaimer that this isn't my art-historical comfort zone, I haven't studied the Arts and Crafts movement nearly as much as I would like, and the comparisons/speculations with AI are entirely my own.
Keep in mind this movement only really took off after like 1880 - the industrial revolution itself had been effectively over for decades. So while I would suspect we'll end up with something similar, a mainstream movement that prioritises human involvement in art and rejects, or deprioritises, AI, it just might still be a while before it gets underway.
As an aside, "Art is already dead," or "we're in a post-art world," feels like a disservice to the many artists who are still producing innovative new art - they're still there, and saying "art is dead" is to pretend they aren't. Nor do people not care about art, it's just that the backlash against AI art isn't yet strong enough to produce a self-sustaining movement. Capitalism doesn't value art, but that's nothing new.
So to underline the point of all this: art coming under threat from machines isn't a new thing. It's happened before, and it adapted and survived, and after a while of endless machine-generated slop people rediscovered the value of art made by humans, and that rediscovery had lasting impact. I'm optimistic the same can happen now.
This isn't to say there isn't an existential threat to many working artists, especially smaller ones. But Art itself won't be killed off just because machines have found a new way to threaten artists. While I agree that change is necessary, and we shouldn't be content with the AI-creep that's infecting everything in life right now, don't let your pessimism run away with you: I'm getting flashbacks to when 3G decided that "climate change is now inevitable and therefore there's no point in doing anything about it". Be angry about AI. Criticise companies and people who use it. The way to motivate people to action is not to bombard them with pessimistic doomer takes, but equally, seeming to advocate inaction isn't going to help anything. Buy from actual artists if you can afford it, boycott things that use AI in a harmful manner where you can afford to do so, encourage others to do the same.

i'm struggling to tell which parts are targeted to who, but i generally agree with the message.
i would like to clear up the "art is dead" comment, however. art being dead does not mean that artists individually do not exist. it does mean that, in order for an artist to exist, they need to sacrifice their artistry, to appease the system. it's an uphill battle, one which results in little to no recognition or benefit if we are to continue living under this system indefinitely. this is an argument separate from AI art, however it is reinforced by the development of it. i think you said it very well:
"Capitalism doesn't value art, but that's nothing new."
