I agree but Bangladesh is mixing up state atheism with state secularism.
They are using logic similar to jesus would've voted democrat or republican debate. The leading argument is that 90% of Bangladeshi are Muslim so it shouldn't have secularism in the constitution but let's be real the government has bigger problems to handle like the economy,law enforcement, justice,election system, constitutional reform and foreign policy. But they choose problems like who should be the father of the nation and should we remove nationalism? Socialism? Or secularism? as more important than inflation or high prices for food in markets. Like I can't eat bro.
TL;DR: The government is trying to appease religious Muslims (majority) to regain some popularity back since they're failing on all the other sectors. Like removing Mujib's face from the president's palace won't help the nation one bit. That guy has been dead for 50 years he can't do anything now. Leave him alone and move on.
Personally speaking secularism is useless since it fails to protect the minority
Secularism is the non-intervention of the State in matters of Religion. It is usually defined with the concept "Freedom of Religion". I specified France because the secularism that arose with the French Revolution and stuck in France since is more like "Freedom from Religion". French secularism is a lot more like State Atheism than anything else.
Secularism should, when implemented properly, protect the rights of religious minorities. A Christian living under Sharia Law is obviously worse off than a Christian living under secular law; even if that Christian might want Biblical Law.
I'm not going to comment on the specific type of Secularism in Bangladesh since i dont know it all too well; but with 300 Million Muslims squished together in such a volatile and small area; it isnt hard to imagine the many religious extremists and the inability for Bangladesh to implement a functioning Secular Regime. We in Turkey had a leader like Atatürk to push through secularism; it had to be protected by the armed forces many times; it was founded upon a nation scarred by losing 25% of it's population between 1911 and 1923 (more than Poland lost in WW2 by percentage). I can only imagine whatever faux "Secularism" was ever in Bangladesh; mostly cracking down on Islamism. Even moderate islamists that have legitimate concerns and dont go to terrorism.
