The Breach of Gabronne Dam!

Explosions behind the friendly lines concerned many soldiers and officers respectively, however, within 4 minutes, their suspicions were confirmed. Red Insurgent Militias has broken the Gabronne Dam! Flooding has crippled the city. The Southern city has completely been submerged and, it is estimated that over 20k people were caught in the gargantuan wave that pushed aside trees, cars, and even houses. The Suburb of Weng has been completely swept away into the river. The water came so suddenly, it swept most of the north-eastern military personnel off their feet. Multiple bridges are heavily damaged and the Parliament and the Bechuanan Government have fled the city to a nearby village. It is also rumoured that even the Confederate F.O.B. is heavily damaged, and multiple high-ranking officers were killed or missing in action. If so, this could possibly cripple the advance into Western Bechuana.

April 20th, 2020 -- Press Briefing Room, inside the Presidential Complex "Tower Shield", 6:00 PM

*Reporters gather inside and begin to take their seats; all of them murmuring, eagerly awaiting for the Press Secretary to arrive. Today was considered the second day of a 'Week of National Mourning'. There was still considerable desire to seek answers to the extent of President Cliffe's misdirection regarding his health, but several outlets have begun to downplay coverage of the allegations in light of his recent death. Besides this, recent stirrings at the Department of Foreign Affairs and the National Public Safety and Security Commission and breaking news regarding Confederated africa have also garnered attention. The clock continues to tick as the Press Secretary runs behind by five minutes. As she arrives, she appears out of breath but trying to compose herself.*

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: "Good evening everyone, I apologize for the delay, but I just got done speaking with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Defense regarding reports of the Gabronne Dam breach. I want to address this before you begin asking questions. Due to the monumental scale of the damage and the influx of reports for the area, it may be some time before final casualty numbers can be confirmed. According to sources within Confederated africa, it is possible members of the 'Bechuanan Government' were caught in the ensuing flooding."

*The reporters begin shouting 'Ada' repeatedly in order to ask a question.*

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: *Turning her gaze to one of the reporters.* "Johann."

Reporter (Johann): "Ada, has Vice-President Otus been in communication with the Bechuanan President, or any other leadership within Confederated Africa?"

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: "President Otus, Johann; and no, the President has not communicated with any leadership in Confederated Africa at this time, but he along with the rest of our government send our deepest condolences to the families of the victims there. The loss of life, property, and security in the region is truly tragic. Unfortunately, I don't have much information besides what I have told you, but there will be more information at the Defense and Foreign Affairs briefings later tonight."

"In other news, President Cliffe's funeral occurred this morning at 9:35 AM, where a two-hour ceremony was convened at the National Cathedral here in Amastris. President Otus along with many others, including myself, attended the funeral to send our final wishes to our departed leader. President Cliffe will lie in state at the National Assembly for one day before his burial later this week. I would like to add that the Department of Foreign Affairs received condolences from officials within Mithlin and Mathorn which are greatly appreciated during this tragic time."

Reporter (Richards): "Ada, does the Presidential Complex have any comment regarding allegations that President Cliffe lied to the public about his health for years leading up to his run for president?"

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: *Sighs* "At this time, the Presidential Complex does not have any public comment to make. Furthermore Richards, have some respect for the dead. Next question, Beria."

Reporter (Beria): "Thank you, Ada. Is it true that the Department of Foreign Affairs was recently directed by President Otus to begin diplomatic outreach efforts to other nations within Oceania, including but not limited to, Pamia and The Socialist Republic of Saian?"

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: "Yes, the Department of Foreign Affairs was directed by President Otus to engage in diplomatic outreach with other members of Oceania. The President finds that during this critical time in international affairs, we should be willing to extend a hand to our neighbors and instill friendlier relations for the entire region. I'm aware that officials at the Department of Foreign Affairs are in current talks, as we speak, with representatives from Pamia and Saian to formally recognize diplomatic relations. I'm sure you can ask Foreign Affairs more about these talks at their briefing later."

"Likewise, for our friends in the international press, President Otus would like to publicly state that Ainz-harwig is 'open for business'; further stating that 'our government would like to extend the offer of diplomatic relations around the world as we start this new chapter of our lives.' Now any other questions for tonight?"

Reporter (Lillian): "Ada, does the Presidential Complex have any comment regarding the ongoing trial of former Prime Minister Dylan Palmer of Mithlin?"

Press Secretary A. Lemoyne: "The Presidential Complex does not comment on the matters of trials overseas. However, as per our standard of Justice, Ainz-Harwig expects a fair trial to be conducted throughout the proceedings. And that's all I have for you everyone, have a good night."

*The cameras begin to shutter and flash with intensity as the Press Secretary leaves the room to return to her office.*

Message from the People's Council

We do not take responsibility for the actions of jingoistic militiamen whom would like to see only people suffer. We hereby condemn the men who participated in this tragic incident. We do not wish for brutal, archaic, and unnecessary deaths within the war.

- - - The Marock Times - Adam Williams delivers evidence as the defence hit back - - -

Report by Thomas Herb - Justice Editor;

Day 2 of the trial of Dylan Palmer - The day the defence struck back? Today, at the Old Firm, it was the defence barristers who had the floor for most of the day, but beforehand, the sitting Prime Minister made a brief appearance giving evidence on how decisions were made in government. He was very impartial, and gave clear, concise and co-operative answers. The main highlight of the day was when Lead Defence Barrister Andrew Townsend laid out the defence's case. Townsend, the Lead Defence Barrister and Charlie Whittingham, the Lead prosecutor, have had history before - they both have dueled it out in the court room on many occasions, but this will be the biggest test yet for each of the individuals.

Townsend spoke with great eloquence and a very calm demeanor, compared with the prosecution's aggressive start to proceedings yesterday. "Your Honour, what happened yesterday was nothing more than a politically motivated attack on the defendant personally. It has no place in Court or the Justice System of this country. And my opposite number knows it. We, the defence, are not here to engage in petty point scoring to win over the votes of a jury. We are here to prove, beyond any reasonable doubt, the innocence of the defendant."

"Your honour, from what we heard from the prosecution yesterday, they seem fairly confident that they can provide proof of both the physical and mental intentions of the former PM - The Actus Rea and Mens Rea, using law speak. If the prosecution is so damn confident of this, why have they not come prepared with a list of transcrips where they have the defendant specifically ordering the murder of millions of people? Because that is what they were implying, your honour."

"Your honour, I wish to move onto another segment of the defence. It's called the Fog of War. The international situation before the war was already precarious. We had massive troop build-ups in Aner, on our northern border. Memorandums from the government's of Mathorn and Michellae show that both of those nations believed that war was inevitable - it was not a question of if, but when. Faced with the imminent invasion of Northern Mithlin, the defendant did only what he saw fit to protect the nation - launching a pre-emptive strike. Yes, there are casualties in war, civilian and military alike, but unlike some militaristic regimes, and contrary to the proescution's belief, the defendant never ordered the killing of innocent civilians, at home or abroad."

"It was not the defendant's fault that Caraisa decided to fly three jumbo jets, ladened with chemical and biological weapons at major civilian cities during the war. It was not the defendant's fault that The Socialist Republic of Saian decided to launch an invasion in the middle of a war. It was not his fault that Aner decided to launch bombing raids against major cities. I ask everyone one pertinent question - If Mithlin had won the war, would we be having this trial? Or would the Caraisan Supreme Leader, Baris Leistung, or Premier Chinh Hoang, of Saian, be in the dock?"

"Your honour, we all make mistakes, and the defendant has show deep sincerity in his statements, he has publicly appologised for his actions. We are a nation who believe in second chances are we not? Yes, the defendant ordered the beginning of a war. But he did not order the murder of innocent civilians."

Tomorrow, the prosecution will get to respond to the Defence. It is expected that they will present new evidence that has only recently been released. In addition, former Chief of Staff, and former commander of the Mithlinian Military, General Arthur Water will be presenting further evidence. The Court will then on Thursday be sitting for the defences' response to the prosecution, before being adjourned on Friday. The trial will resume on Monday, where further witnesses, including the estranged wife of Dylan Palmer, Kit Grundy, will give evidence related to the PM's private life during his term in office. In addition, the former Fleet Street Doctor, Dr. George Bendlingham, will be giving evidence on behalf of the defence. On the Tuesday next week, the defence and the prosecution will present their closing arguments to the Jury, before court adjourns as the Jury deliberates. And who knows - after today, what might happen next?

RP Statement:

I am voiding the lore about Mathorn becoming a parliamentary republic. It will now remain permanently as a Presidential Federal Republic. I have edited my dispatches accordingly and shall continue to do so in order to fit the current timeline/population requirements. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. Sam White (yes the forever immortal being) has just been re-inaugurated as President (in January).

I will be doing some RP work on a Congressional showdown over the President's proposed educational reforms. If your interested on this topic, please feel free to peruse my dispatches (but they shall be edited in the coming days to tidy them up and make the lore make sense). But this is probably the main one that is ready:

Ainz-harwig wrote:OOC: No worries, NS was pretty much non-operational for most of they day on my end as well. I'll be sure to formally acknowledge Mithlin/Mathorn in tonight's press briefing. :)

In the meantime, does anyone have any advice for constructing a military? Different regions have different standards on how to log those stats, and I want to be sure I'm not overstepping. I reviewed The Socialist Republic of Saian's RP guide dispatch, to which it looks like NST is the best bet for manpower/budgeting. Do we start with a reasonable supply of equipment as well?

The Socialist Republic of Saian wrote:Our region tries to maintain an honor code when constructing a military as we want to encourage a somewhat realistic yet creative environment for this particular aspect of RP. I think in regards to manpower, your current plot matches the IRL population of the area your nation currently resides in.

Edit: While budgeting and equipment are totally up to how your nation works. I used NST for Saian.

Nogodia wrote:Manpower's also a general honor system, I believe.

Sorry, gents, but Saian's RP guide is quite old and we haven't really been following it for more than a year. Saian's guide was the fundamental basis for RP in this region, so we owe that player a great debt for putting it together. But big chunks of it were superseded by the guide Loustania issued when they were RP Minister. Loustania's rules were implemented to control rampant god-modding.

And, in turn, some of Loustania's rules were superseded by the rules on SIC orders, etc.

TL;DR: There are rules about military size, insofar as total troop numbers must be calculated on the basis of RP population size for the chosen RP era using data fed into the NS Tracker website (RP Population and Workforce Pull).

RP population size is controversial but for months and months now we've informally been using a rule whereby RP population is linked to the actual IRL population of the country's plots.

I have not unpinned Saian's RP guide because there is still a lot of good stuff in it, and I have not had the time to do the work to harmonize the still-valid rules from Saian's and Loustania's guides with the more recent update and the informal rules.

That'll be after a big little shift...

Oh my, this is an incredible change in our history...

Pascala wrote:snip

Thank you for the clarification Pascala, I appreciate the help.

If I remember correctly, NST has a measure to associate strength percentages for army/navy/air force, so I think I can achieve somewhat of a harmony between Saian's and Loustania's guides for the time being. Once I actually formulate the necessary factbooks, I'll be sure to keep them fluid, in case I need to change anything.

I feel like NationState is trying to give me reasons to wish they went along with NationStates 2, if there were more interactive and engaging elements that comes with the site that gives more options and complexities. Back then I was really into world-building my country with you guys. But since the last few years as you all know, I've been really down and barely up. I know, the fun is how we all make it.
