Question of the Week!

Hello hello hello, it's your Events Administrator again yet again, I must be annoying you all with how much I've been posting lately! But this time around it's not a competition I'm coming at you with, it's a brand new Regional Activity called as you probably guessed, the Question of the Week! The Question of the Week will be asked by your Events Administrator on a weekly basis on the Regional Message Board (RMB) and in the Nation-Building channel located on Geopolity's discord server, usually every Sunday.

The questions will all pertain to your nation as it is within the Geopolity Regional canon and timeline in some shape or form, and will likely make you think a little deeper or encourage you to do some research to help build your nation up even more! These questions are meant to spur on another level of world building for our region as a whole and each individual nation, spur on your creativity in another form that isn't role-play, and allows us to share to each other what makes our nations unique! Let's not wait any longer, the first Question of the Week is:

"Why is your capital city located where it is?"

I'll go first! Why is Jakarta located where it is? The lands around Jakarta have been inhabited by humans since around the 4th Century BCE, and is located on an estuary of the Ciliwung River. Rivers made it much easier to traverse the terrain and as it flowed into the Java Sea, it was strategically located as well as the various ancient civilizations of Eulumia were all for the most part seafaring peoples. Various civilizations laid claim to Jakarta as their Capital and used it to rule the surrounding areas as it was centrally located and allowed for quick access into the populous island of Java (most populated island in the world) as well as quick access to the Java Sea. It proved to be such a vital location that the Dutch quickly targeted Jakarta as a place of vital importance and as such call it Batavia, and made it the colonial capital of the VoC's (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) Dutch East Indies.

So in short, since ancient times Jakarta has held a strategically important location as it sits on an estuary of the Ciliwung River flowing into the Java Sea, allowing quick access to the Sea itself, surrounding lands, and the interior of the world's most populated island.

Fun fact! Jakarta is actually sinking into the Java Sea at a rate of 6.7 inches (17cm) a year due to a variety of factors such as rising sea levels and (largely illegal) over extraction of underground water, making the megacity's government lead to a suitable location for a new capital, likely in the south of Borneo, Eulumia's largest island in landmass that it shares with Lanfang-.

Foreign Minister V. Volkov: It is very encouraging to see there is common will to improve relations between our nations. Of course we must also be realistic that this will be a long process, but today is the opportunity to begin that journey to reconciliation between our two states. Myself and my colleagues in the Government have set a few proposals which I would like to discuss with you.

The first will be a visa policy specifically for family reunions. This we feel is a very important issue, one that effects the citizens of both nations. We think these can be 14 day visas that will require documentation to prove that the applicant is related to residents within the other state. So birth certificates and other similar government documents. We also wish to propose a student exchange program. Of course it is not us, but the future generation that will be key to reconciliation between our nations. As such we believe a student exchange program will be extremely beneficial. Our young people will learn the ways of the other side first hand, rather than basing their opinions on rumours and fear.

I am eager to get your opinion on these proposals and look forward to hearing any proposals the Soviet delegation may have.

~~ Министерство иностранных дел СССР ~~

Title: Soviet-Romanov Summit

Roshchino — After the Romanov Foreign Minister, the Soviet delegation prepared to answer. As always, a diplomatic offer needed to be closely studied to avoid overpromising and underdelivering.

Minister Viktor Sokolov: I do agree with you, Minister Volkov. The process towards healing and amending the mistakes of the past will be a long one. But not only this, it will be a difficult one. It will force our peoples to revisit a chapter of history that may be painful and may be uncomfortable. But just as you mentioned, this is an opportunity to reconcile. It is the first step in many more but it is a good first step.

Our delegation agrees with you that beginning with a visa policy that allows for family reunions would be a good way to start. The 14 day visa is policy we can stand by. We would also like to add that such a process begins at least 6 months in advance to allow for the respective entities to verify the necessary information to approve a visa.

The student exchange program is also something acceptable to us. We believe that allowing the students of both countries to learn about the other country will be an investment in the future where our societies are not afraid to interact for fear of the unknown. Humanizing both sides will allow us to begin building a diplomatic relationship in the future. In addition to this, we would like to propose that special study abroad programs are created for college students of both countries where they get to visit and study in different places across our respective countries. That way, they don't "just cross over the border" but they also get a chance to learn about the communities that live on both sides.

Lastly, we would like to propose that a relaxation of the embargo that exists from our side takes place progressively over some period of time. Slowly establishing commercial relations and nurturing those relations over time will give a compelling reason to both governments, in the future, to not desist from continuing this grueling but rewarding process.

Furstian-Eulumian Summit

Scheduled to take place on September 2, on the city of Singapur, the summit has the potential to be the initial catalyst for strengthened bilateral ties with the Asian nation.

Items on the agenda will possibly include environmental cooperation and extended economic partnership between Furstia and Eulumia. Naturally, the Office of the Presidency has expressed that the Comrade President will offer all assistance that our nation can provide for the disaster caused by the eruption of Mount Sinabung and subsequent earthquakes which have left material damage, along with the tragic loss of life of three persons.

White Infinian Police officer murders Black teenager

In a predictable, but nonetheless abhorrent, turn of events, a black 16-year old teen - by the name of Andikan Nedelovu - was shot in the head by a white police officer in the Infinian city of Songea.

As initial reports told, the teen entered a supermarket with an intention to steal. Without delay, a white police officer - named Marin Waleck - drew his pistol and fired a single shot at the head of Andikan Nedelovu, killing him instantly.
The Infinian Police Force has defended the actions of its officer as "rightful", while simultaneously and cynically offering its "thoughts and prayers" to the family of the deceased person.

Bantu ethnic groups will be marching in the coming days, demonstrating their outrage at the killing of Nedelovu.

It is evident that the racially-motivated socio-economic inequalities that have been the norm in the Infinian nation for centuries are the cause of Mr. Nedelovu's death, and sadly, he has just been another victim in the near-endless list of black Africans assasinated by a hateful white regime.

Upcoming celebrations for the 242nd Anniversary of Puerto Deseado

While originally settled in the 15th century as a Yoruba warcamp with the name of "Èkó", on September 10, 1778, the Real Compañía Marítima of the Labyrnnan Empire gained possesion over the area following a short but bloody skirmish with the natives. The European power had seeked to acquire the settlement as its privileged position would allow the Labyrnnan Armada to control traffic through that region of the African continent.

The incessant flow of raw African goods, slaves and European manufactures quickly turned Puerto Deseado into the most important settlement in West Africa.

On February 15, 1890, the Conference of Puerto Deseado was convened and the fate of Furstia as an independent nation was sealed. Independence was finally declared in the capital city on January 8, 1896.

14 killed in violent confrontation with Zapatista forces
Tecpatan, Chiapas

Today in Chiapas, a small group of men kidnapped 3 teachers at a school in Tecpatan with known Zapatista sympathies. These men were believed to have been affiliated with a local Cartel. Before local police could attempt to rescue the victims, Zapatista soldiers took matters into their own hands, and located the men and where they were holding the teachers hostage. After brief moments of tension, the men opened fire on the soldiers.

Two were initially injured, and the rest took cover. A nearby bystander was also injured. After a few rounds, the Zapatistas shot back. This confrontation went on for an hour before the Zapatistas stormed the building and fought the men head on. 7 were killed in the battle, including two Zapatistas, three of the men, and two of the teachers. As the remaining men tried to flee, the police had arrived, ordered to arrest both the men and Zapatistas. In the ensuing shootout, six Zapatistas, four policemen, and five men were injured. Furthermore, three Zapatistas, two Policemen, and one of the group of men were killed.

The bystander from earlier also died.

The police were able to apprehend some of those involved in the conflict, but most, primarily Zapatista, escaped. Those that were injured were taken to a local hospital.

Party Merger

As of recent, the JFP (Japan First Party) and the DPP (Democratic Party of the People) have noticed similar stances on many points of their parties. The JFP Party Leader, Samejima Suki, and the DPP Party Leader, President Akiya Komi, met earlier today to discuss a possible party merger. Beforehand, details were discussed and it was decided that they party leaders would make the final decision. We just received word that both parties have agreed to the merger, keeping President Akiya the Party Leader of the newly formed First Democratic Party of the People (FDPP).

Officials of other parties have voiced concerns that this will cause an imbalance in the politics of Japan. President Akiya confronted the concerns stating that the merger is just a joining together of like minded people and that the merger had no direct cause of gaining political influence.

Registered voters that were under either party will have their party affiliation to match the new merger. The government of Japan has stated that the voters will not have to worry about updating their voter profile.

Board of Rites

To the respective Heads of State and Government, as well as individuals responsible for energy policies;

The Board of Rites of the Great Qing cordially invites three types of guests to attend a proposed OPEC summit, which will be held in Pingyang (Pyongyang), North Chosun Viceroyalty. The three types are as follows:

  • Representatives from oil, natural gas, and/or petrochemical companies (i.e: ExxonMobil, BP, Gazprom, CNOOC, Shell, etc.);

  • Heads of State or Heads of Government (if possible);

  • and Ministers responsible for the extraction of petrochemical resources, energy policy, or economic affairs.

In this summit, it is expected that the nations will touch upon a variety of topics that are critical towards the continued sustainability of the world's petrochemical industry. These topics include the universal adoption of international standards regarding the construction of petrochemical facilities, industrial safety, employee safety, surveying, drilling, exploration, and development of petrochemical resources. The opening segment of said summit will also dive into the issue of membership. All nations of the world are invited to attend this conference; however, membership into the prestigious organization known as OPEC will only be available to nations and/or companies which are responsible for a substantial amount of oil or gas production.

In addition, the summit will also see the addressing of various issues, such as a fixation of oil prices (per barrel) and natural gas, production quotas based on a nation's capabilities, as well as a shared OPEC strategic stockpile of petrochemical resources for use in the event of emergencies.

May all nations interested in attending respond to this post post haste.

Let's not wait any longer, the first Question of the Week is:

"Why is your capital city located where it is?"

Mogadishu was founded in 38 BCE, during the tenure of consuls Calidius Eugenius and Musa Auxentius, fairly obscure consuls who were one of the many rulers of the First Infinian Republic, a Roman client state. Strategically located between the Indian Ocean and the Shebelle (Shabelle) river in the fertile Shebelle data, it became a prosperous trading post which rapidly rose in size to become the second-largest city in Infiny by the time of the First Kingdom. A dark note on the history of Mogadishu was the major role that it played in the slave trade, as it quickly became a marketplace for slaves of Africa, who were then sold to Arabia and Europe.

During the centuries after the Romans left but before the Infinian Civil War (100-633 CE, Antebellum) Mogadishu become encircled by the Hawiye clan, which controlled much of the coast, and the native Infinians, which dominated the city itself. This became particularly relevant during the civil war, as Mogadishu, by now the most powerful city in the Kingdom, was surrounded by the Hawiye who had aligned themselves with the Islamic insurgents. The war raged both around and within the city, as the Duqa, somewhat synonymous to the modern term of mayor, had Muslim inhabitants imprisoned to prevent them from organizing into a force powerful enough to take the city. Fighting off assaults by Hawiye and Rahanweyn, the city was surrounded by 4 years, with the only relief coming from Infinian ships. Only by December 637 did the city of Chisimayo (Kismayo) fall to an Axumese-Lamu attack, and was the war-torn city reunited with the Kingdom. The Sultanate formally surrendered half a year later.

Over the next decades, Mogadishu swiftly regained its power as one of the most important cities in the realm. However, it was still not the capital. That honor fell to Malao (Berbera), which is up to this day the spiritual and cultural center of Infiny. During the Twilit Era (673-858), Infiny experienced large decentralization, as Mogadishu effectively became a free city. The realm started reconnecting in 858, when Hailu the Magnificent, the first Emperor of Infiny of the new Makonnen dynasty, established the Sobiraniya in Mogadishu, a deliberative assembly aimed at reintegrating the realm without bloodshed. This solidified Mogadishu as the political heart of the nation, and in 866, the Emperor formally moved his capital to the city. Another factor was travel, as Mogadishu was more central and easy to reach then the far-northern city of Malao.

For the next millennium, Mogadishu remained the capital of Infiny, until it fell to colonizing forces in the late 19th century. However, between during the First World War, Infiny recaptured the lost territory, and in 1916 Mogadishu became the capital of the brand new Fourth Republic of Infiny. Since then, Infiny had seen another invasion, and another brutal civil war, but Mogadishu endured as the capital city. In 1971, it was decided that only Mogadishu as it existed in 1916 would be called 'Mogadishu,' or Mogadishu proper. The area surrounding it would be granted the native Somali name for Mogadishu, to reflect their historical dominance in these areas. This is why the formal name of the Infinian capital is Mogadishu-Xamara.

Statement from the Bureau of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Eulumia

The Federal Government and the people of Eulumia alike thank the great generosity provided by the nations of Japan (Vashnal), Infiny, and the United States (Imperial Eagle). While Eulumia is no stranger to these events, it is a welcome change of pace to receive international support to help alleviate the burdens of rebuilding for the people affected the most by the string of earthquakes and particularly the eruption of Mount Sinabung. It it with much gratitude that Jakarta accepts these generous offers of foreign aid and will immediately put the funds and supplies to use to help those affected by these natural disasters, and a delegation will be dispatched to meet the American Civilians and Corps of Engineers in the Minangkabau International Airport located on Sumatra, where they will be guided to the Aceh and Bengkulu provinces. However, Jakarta would like to inform Washington DC that Mount Sinabung is not done erupting, and will likely continue to do so for at least several more days, posing the dangers of lava and volcanic ash in the air, lowering air quality. It is recommended that any individuals coming to assist Federal and Local Officials to bring masks and protective eye coverings.

Re: PT Eulufood Sukses Makmur Tbk Production Plant

Seeing as how the popularity of Eulumia's "Eulumie Instant Noodles" have spiked drastically in the last decade within Furstia, major Eulumian company PT Eulufood Sukses Makmur Tbk, aka Eulufoods", has expressed its interests with opening a production plant within Furstia itself. Eulufoods claims this proposal is done for a variety of reasons such as: Saving on expenses exporting it to Furstia and conversely saving on expenses importing it from Eulumia, allowing production to be ramped up to keep up with Furstian demand, and to allow local Furstians to add their own takes on Eulumie Instant Noodles by creating flavors unique to the Furstian cuisine. Eulufoods has come before Jakarta knowing that the Socialist government might not take to the idea of a foreign company opening a production plant within Furstia's borders, and has sought the guidance of Jakarta. Many Eulumian policymakers have reviewed the concept and decided that it could help to foster even warmer relations between Eulumia and Furstia, and should Puerto Deseados be more comfortable with it, the production plant would be given to the government to run. We look forwards to hearing from you soon, as well as your arrival at the Summit in Singapura.

Presidential Election underway, polls leaning towards to Dawes victory

Election season is now underway as the nation heads to polls to either re-elect Rebecca Dawes for another 4 years or vote in the other two choices for President, Democrat James Doolittle and Independant Sara Sinclair. Dawes is leading in the polls due to her handling of the Capitol Bombing and bring to justice those that conducted the attack and ensuring the national economy is booming. Doolittle trails her by 10 points and has often been critical of her foreign policy, of which he attacks often following the Danubian Civil War while Sinclair is lagging behind by 20 points. As its still too early to say what the final outcome, most agree that it may be a Republican-National Union landslide in this election cycle.

Previously Unanticipated OPEC Summit

Jakarta believes that the Great Qing are wise to host a summit regarding the oil and natural gas extraction and production of the world, and is particularly interested in seeking plans to amend the volatile market prices that so often change without forewarning. Standardized prices around the globe is in the best interests for everyone, producers and consumers alike. - Magistrate Utari Passel, Chairman of the Corporate Alliance (mega-conglomerate overseeing natural resource extraction and production)

Jakarta looks forwards to this summit in Pyingyang and hopes to see the world's premier oil and natural gas producing nations attend as it is in all our best interests to correct the markets and establish set guidelines for such a vital industry worldwide.

The geographic proximity and similar cultures of our nations has decidedly marked Pangluan as a high priority in every regard in Jakarta, and as such the Eulumian Senate wishes to properly establish ties and exchange full embassies between Tilwijk and Jakarta. The Eulumian Ambassador Yusuf Bulan has been designated to represent Eulumia within Tilwijk. Jakarta looks forwards tohearing back from Tilwijk eagerly and cannot wait to see where future relations will go, surely a bright future to come.

Signed,
Muhamad Kusuma, Director of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Eulumia

Subject: Establishing formal ties

To Director Muhamad Kusuma,

We in Tilwijk are pleased to receive this correspondence. The offer to exchange embassies and formally establish ties again is welcomed and accepted with open arms. Eulumia is a very important neighbor and friend in the region and we hope to keep our relations in a state of reflection of this friendship and brotherhood, especially as tensions are increasing in some parts of the world, including our own, and civilians are becoming uneasy. We hope to assure a lasting peace and prosperity for Southeast Asia and our friends. Mr. Bulan shall be welcome to set up the embassy with his staff at any time in Tilwijk, likewise we have nominated Diyosa Matarawan to be the ambassador to Jakarta/Eulumia.

Best wishes and regards,

Lina Adlawan,
Minister of Foreign Affairs

ROMANOVAN-SOVIET SUMMIT

Roshchino, Vyborgsky District, Romanovskaya

Foreign Minister Volkov listens to his Soviet counterpart, writing down notes of what is being said. Once he finishes, Volkov turns to one of his staff sitting next to him, whispering into their ear. He then turns to face the Soviet delegation.

Viktor Volkov: "Minister Sokolov, I am glad that you have agreed with the proposals we put forward. Of course there will be time taken to put these proposals in place, getting the necessary infrastructure ready etc. I would just like to pick up on a few points you have put forward."

I am glad you accepted the idea for a student exchange program. As for the addition for study abroad programs for college students we already have such provisions in our visa program. Soviet college students can apply through the Romanovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. Numbers are very limited though due to the small number of 3rd level colleges and universities in Romanovskaya. Certainly we would welcome an effort from your side to provide Romanovan citizens the opportunity to study at Soviet 3rd level institutions.

As for trade, the lifting of the embargo on Romanovan goods is absolutely essential to pursue any further cooperation down the line. While the embargo remains in place it makes any progress with regards to normalising of relations very difficult. So I truly hope your efforts to ease the embargo will be successful so we can further cooperate in the future.
