Question:
Why is naval combat in NH afaik is very short ranged?

Since, you know, it’s space, and there is nothing stopping the range of a weapon, shouldn’t it be farther?

It's because our tech system is not actually realistic. It's internally consistent and based on WH40K systems, but it's not realistic to how you'd might actually expect real space combat to work.

WH40K space combat is largely limited by sensor capabilities. Auger sensors don't have a very long range compared to sensors from other settings like Star Trek and aren't very reliable. Closing to visual distance is the best means of identifying a target and accurately firing at it. Another factor for the development of WH40K space combat is the presence of super solders known as Adeptus Astartes, or Space Marines. These fighting forces prefer to board enemy vessels to kill crew members and destroy vital systems. Doing so often requires getting up close and sometimes necessitates ramming the target. Orks as well prefer ramming and boarding enemy ships because it's more fun that way. Tyranids have the ability to sneak in past augers to attempt to bash apart and devour ships. There are those who are more sensible and prefer longer range engagements like the Eldar and Tau navies, but those tend to be fairly easily outmatched by the armored hulking masses that are Imperial Navy ships.

A very, very long time ago we actually did do it at more realistic ranges. It wasn't all that interesting and that RP quickly died. So when we re-did the RP for round two, we went in a WH40K direction instead.

I've been thinking about means of doing Space Combat and have decided that the item I'll use to limit the range is basically an energy-only shield. It uses the same material that I invented for Phazers to contain some large fraction of the beam until they close to a "small enough" distance (or the Crystals fill to 80% capacity) that kinetic and energy weapons are roughly equal in effectiveness. That, and a *big* gunned destroyer means good things ;p

Lol what if I send a hyper realistic puppet here.

The worldbuilding of your nation doesn't matter to us, it only needs to be consistent with the NH universe/lore if you're participating in RP.

hi

regarding the "wh40k" style aspect of the region does this aesthetic apply to all sectors of a nation? from ships to culture, to armies and etc?

It's mainly as a technology base to have a level of consistency when dealing with issues around technology. Psykers and the Warp with all the daemons and chaos gods do exist. However the more creative members have taken the Warhammer 40k technology and adapted it to fit their needs. A good example of this would be my nation. I've created my own races of aliens and combined Imperium and Tau technologies to form something unique for a very fluid and mobile warfare doctrine.

Ah good to hear. Looks like I might have a good time here. Thanks for the clarification
