Just how people are, they're paying me a compliment in their minds. But they don't realize it makes me question my decisions sometimes. I had a number of people die at our centre quite recently. Among them kids. It really... well i cant explain it but when little kids die and innocent people, the normal reaction is what? Everybody is sad and shocked and their entire day is done, right? They're not even dreaming of working any more for the day, maybe the week.
We have to get back in minutes to going back to work and trying to save others, burying all our existential feelings. All doctos, nurses, EMTs, medics learn to do it. For some reason, I have never been able to be dispassionate when kids die on my watch. It takes a lot out of me. This week's been very rough, and other docs of my level have been at it for 20 years. I've been back in the game now only 2 years so, I havent been able to develop those scabs over my heart yet. They'll come in time, I'm sure. But seeing ur pt slowly wither is very different from surgical deaths. In surgery (my prev expterise) we were taught not to socialise much. Just enough to know ure not taking the balls off the appendix guy and the appendix off the balls guy.
I need to learn to numb that feeling, and this week has absolutely sucked. : ) Makes me kinda miss being a consultant to evil corporations. It never felt euphoric or like I was a hero, but at least I never went home feeling like ****
