We do not.
Deerfenland had written an essay about how many naysayers there are when you are striving to make it into professional sports like baseball. In one he mentioned a friend was being scouted, while other people were telling him that he was too short, didn’t work hard enough, wouldn’t ever make it. It struck a chord with me, a sort of “been there, done that” thing.
I’ll just say this. If he is intent on becoming a MLB catcher, he’s chosen the most difficult route into professional baseball. And he better damn well go to college, one with a great coach. Baseball is a numbers game, and catchers as catchers have such a long development time, that development is best left to the NCAA. Everyone has heart aplenty.
A few HS catchers do get minor league contracts. If they can hit, they’re moved to other positions so they can advance. Otherwise, someone has to catch all those pitchers who are in development. Professional baseball goes through pitchers at a tremendous rate; that’s where the turnover is.
