Description

Jousting

Brought into Madrueji from a foreign land, jousting involves two heavily armored horsemen charging at each other with lances. The objective is to break your lance on your opponent's shield, and if your lucky, to unhorse him at the same time. Deaths are not unheard of in this sport, even with the riders being far more heavily armored than normal and using breakable lances.

Polo

Another equestrian sport, polo has two teams of four players attempting to hit a ball into the opposing team's goal while on horseback, using long wooden sticks. It has been called the "game of kings" due to the immense cost of maintaining enough horses to have fresh mounts for the duration of the game.

Archery

Whether on foot or horseback, archery competitions have gone as far back as the founding of Madrueji. Contestants seek to show off their accuracy and shooting skills by hitting difficult targets at long ranges. Crossbow and musket competitions also exist.

Jereed

Jereed is a sport that involves flinging wooden javelins with blunted tips at opposing horsemen with the intent of striking or knocking them off their mounts. Riders can also score points by catching the javelins in the air before they strike the players. Targeting the horses is forbidden in this game.

Matrak

Matrak is a type of combat sport involving two individuals fighting against one another with a wooden stick wrapped in leather and a leather wrapped shield. It was designed as a way for soliders to practice fighting without seriosuly injuring or killing one another in duels.

Horse Racing

While the chariot has fallen out of use for this purpose, horse racing is still a popular pastime within Madrueji, with both commoners and nobles alike transfixed by the action such events bring. In addition to horses, camels are also popular as racing beasts, while the Desert Dwarves prefer to race ostriches instead.

Chess

Not a sport of the body, but rather of the mind, chess is popular among all classes of Madruejian citizens, as anyone can learn the game even with a small space to work with.

Hunting

Hunting for sport, as opposed to for food or supplies, is practiced by the nobility and upper class. Of course, the more dangerous the beast, the more glory there is for the hunters, so monster hunts are quite common, despite the risk involved in such endeavors. Hunters often make use of dogs and hawks or falcons to help them catch their quarry.

Wrestling

One of the most common martial arts, wrestling is practiced by both commoners and soldiers alike, although Madruejian wrestling is more similar to MMA than pure grappling. A variant of the sport is known as "oil wrestling", where combatants coat themselves in olive oil so that even more technique and strength is needed to put their opponent into submission.
