I got my foot in the door with Artifexian's videos on phonology (hell, a lot of his videos served as a foot in the door before more in-depth research for me; he has a knack for presenting fairly complex topics in an understandable, albeit simplified, manner). After that if I see any IPA symbols that I don't recognize, I can look up the symbol itself, or the component diacritics, on Wikipedia and I'll usually end up understanding, if not always being able to replicate, the sound from the description. (e.g. this beauty - [β̞͡ð̞ ] - is a labial-dental approximant, notated using a tie to represent double articulation, β and ð to represent the voiced labial and dental fricatives, and down-tacks to represent their lowering from fricatives to approximants. This is an actual sound found in Yele, and it hurts my brain).

I'm gonna take your word on that.

It doesn't look that complicated; basically it's the voiced fricative version of the pt- in e.g. pterodactyle (in languages where the p isn't silent, that is).

Nhoor wrote:It doesn't look that complicated; basically it's the voiced fricative version of the pt- in e.g. pterodactyle (in languages where the p isn't silent, that is).

1. It's not a fricative; there's just no dedicated symbol for either the (bi)labial approximant or the dental approximant so they need to notate it with the corresponding fricative + downtack. We're only dealing with the two components of the total sound, and already we need to break out diacritics to represent it. These sound are rare, and I dare you to pull off a dental approximant without making a mistake.

2. πτερόν [pterón], from which pterodactly arises, is a sequential cluster wherein the [p] is pronounced before the [t]. [β̞͡ð̞ ] is not a cluster, but a simultaneous articulation.

So, it's an approximant that is pronounced both bilabially and dentally simultaneously (and should not be confused with the much easier to pronounce labiodental approximant, notated [ʋ]), kind of like how [w] is pronounced both labially and velarly simultaneously.

Believe me, it's complicated. And rare. And bloody hard to pronounce.

Do you have a link to an example?

Unfortunately, no. Yele is a small language spoken by at most a few thousand people, so resources are a bit scarce outside of academic papers. There's probably some recordings somewhere, but I have no clue where they'd be.

Airforce of Domanania

The Federated States of Domanania Airforce, also known as the FSD Airforce or FSDAF, is the airforce of Domanania, responsible for aerial-based warfare. It operates almost all aircraft that support the army. With the dissolution of conscription in Domanania, the 3rd Air Group was disbanded, releasing the T8 Light Fighter from combat service, maintaining a few platforms for training.

History

The air force was split off from the Doman Army in 1990, assuming command over almost all army air forces, with the army only maintaining a pair of helicopter squadrons.

The air force has tried to maintain a fleet of advanced aircraft, always pushing for more advanced systems. The air force has acquired 5th generation aircraft recently, being the first platform to enter the air force's service. Additional stealth platforms are planned to be acquired, along with advanced 4.5 gen aircraft.

in 2023, elements from the air force were re-integrated back into the army to form the Army Air Command. This included 93 mixed role helicopters. The air force protested this decision, and has ordered more aircraft to fill its ranks.

Current Operational Status

The FSDAF is designed to protect the country from land based installations, and fend off aircraft and naval vessels. As of 2022, the air force is interested in projecting power by air to a majority of the Mesder seas, using a combination of long range weapons, refueling platforms, and unmanned aircraft. Currently the air force employs 22,500 personnel, with ~15,800 personnel in active service and 6,700 in reserve with around 5,000 civilian personnel. The airforce operates 7 air groups and 273 aircraft, as well as air-borne infantry specialized in combat search and rescue.

Equipment

The air force operates a number of air craft, including: 70 Fighter Aircraft, 112 Mixed Role Helicopter, 30 Attack Helicopters, 11 UAV's, 21 Transport Planes, and 29 Miscellaneous Aircraft as of 2023.

Organization

The FSDAF is organized into 5 operational air groups, and one special operations unit.

This includes 2 fixed wing combat groups, 2 Helicopter Groups, and 1 Strategic Air Group.

I liked this but it is of course very sad; what else could be more important in life than NationStates?

Also guys, will I be silently judged if I use this image below in my news thread about a possible Bharinyal clan or SHOCK attack on the Maranyeli Baha?

"That's weird. They shrank his shoulders, made him look soft..." /s

Probably your wallet shrank as well.

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads on here, the rest of you don’t forget to call and say I love you and thanks. Without him you wouldn’t be here, your mother probably wasn’t even in the mood that night.

BTW, Happy Father's Day to you, kind sir.

Wellsia wrote:Not in the US

A quick search revealed that basically every country seems to do whatever scheduling their respective Mother's and Father's Days :)

I must say I kind of lost track of it, my own father having passed away more than 20 years ago already and not being a father myself.
Happy Father's Day to all of you if it's today where you live; if not, don't hesitate to mention it when it's celebrated in your country!
