Politics of Comfed
The politics of Comfed operate under the framework of a parliamentary democracy under semi-constitutional monarchy. The nation is ruled by its monarch, currently King Ivan I, who in practice always governs through a Prime Minister and Cabinet that maintains the confidence of the legislature. The current Prime Minister is Meredith Nicholson. The legislature of Comfed is the Estates General, which is composed of its royally-appointed upper house, the Estate Noble, and the lower house, the elected Estate Curiate. The highest court in Comfed is the Supreme Court of Justice.
The government party is the Whig Parliamentary Party, which governs from the center-right along with the more conservative Constitutional Democratic Party in a parliamentary majority. Comfed is a multiple-party system, with four parties holding seats in the Estates General - the Whigs, the Social Liberal Alliance, the Constitutional Democratic Party, and the Socialists. The Whigs and Social Liberals have dominated Comfedian politics since the 1950s, since the Conservative Party split into the Whig and Constitutional Democrat wings. The Comfedian electoral system of ranked-choice voting in single-member constituencies means that parties rarely hold outright majorities, but only major parties are able to send delegates to the legislature, resulting in relatively stable coalition governments.
The Comfedian Constitution is uncodified, consisting of statutes and constitutional conventions, and developed over the course of the modern era (since the sixteenth century.)
