The Shogunate of Shadowstorer is a gargantuan, cultured nation, ruled by Shogun Satoshi Hangeramaru with an even hand, and renowned for its zero percent divorce rate, free-roaming dinosaurs, and stringent health and safety legislation. The hard-nosed, humorless population of 10.857 billion shadows are prohibited from doing almost everything except voting, which they do timidly and conservatively.

The large, corrupt, moralistic government juggles the competing demands of Administration, Defense, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Las Kenturas. The average income tax rate is 56.9%.

The powerhouse Shadowstorerian economy, worth a remarkable 1,010 trillion dhuwits a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, fairly diversified black market in Book Publishing, Information Technology, Arms Manufacturing, and Basket Weaving. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 93,078 dhuwits, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 3.4 times as much as the poorest.

Nature magazines featuring stick insects on their covers are sometimes mistaken for fashion magazines, the New Shadowstorerian Thesaurus lists "love" and "oppress" as synonyms, pulling weeds is seen as a threat to national security, and the Shadowstorer Mental Asylum Party have recently won seats in parliament. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Shadowstorer's national animal is the Ocelot, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Shogunism.

Shadowstorer is ranked 26,499th in the world and 2nd in Pax Indica for Most Cultured, scoring 83 on the Snufflebottom-Wiggendum Pentatonic Scale.
