What is NationStates?

NationStates is a multiplayer online text-based game which simulates a government setting. It was created by author LinkMax Barry and was released on the 13th of November, 2002 as a means of promoting a novel Jennifer Government. The game has currently 223,380 active nations in 23,734 different regions.[2]

Players (under the guise of their nation) operate their own country by making decisions that have an impact on the economy, society, and culture of their people. The object of the game is to lead a country in the way the player finds the best. At the start of the game, the player chooses a few basic characteristics including the name of the country, flag, motto, currency, national animal, and style of government. Answers to a short questionnaire determine the initial ratings of the country's civil, economic, and political rights. The nation's population starts at five million and increases every day automatically with play.

Issues

Issues are political decisions that players make, which shape their nations as a result. The choices a player makes on issues directly affect the nation's civil rights, economic, and political freedom levels, as well as the national tax rate.
As time progresses, issues will determine the type of government a nation has, with the game categorizing the type from 'Democratic Socialists' to 'Psychotic Dictatorship'.

A player can decide how often he or she wishes to receive issues by accessing the settings page and choosing from a list of options under the sub-heading New Issues. The options available for selection are:

  • None;

  • One per weekday;

  • One per day;

  • Two per weekday;

  • Two per day; or

  • Vacation Mode (prevent a nation from receiving new issues and extending period after which a nation will be deleted for inactivity, from 28 days to 60 days).

Depending on the options a player selects, they will achieve varying ratings relating to their nation's Economy, Political Freedoms, and Civil Rights (visible on a nation's homepage).

A nation's government type is determined by an algorithm which calculates a nation's civil liberties, economic, and political freedoms and based on this result, allocates the nation a government type appropriate to that nation. There are 27 government types, ranging from Scandinavian Liberal Paradise to Iron Fist Socialists to Psychotic Dictatorship.

To view how many nations there are of each government category, please see the data compiled by Farengeto and provided in the below spoiler (data accurate as of the 8th of June 2020).

[The following information has been kindly provided by Goddess Relief Office and reproduced here with his express permission. You are invited to read this guide to different issue types for more comprehensive information on this subject.]

NationStates has five different categories in which issues are organized into; general, population-based, issue options, statistics, and special issues.

  • General issues:

    General issues form the majority of issues that a nation will receive. Issues of this type are randomly generated with there being no precondition to receiving them.

    Examples of general issues include:

  • Population-based issues

    Population-based issues are those which can only be unlocked by a nation's population. If a player chooses to dismiss issues of this type when he/she received them or chooses an option that he/she may later regret, the player will still be able to receive population-based issues. However, the player will receive the specific issue later and not immediately after dismissing it. Through such issues, a player will be granted the ability to edit the player's capital city, leader, and national religion.

    Examples of population-based issues include:

  • Issue-option

    Issue-option is only unlock-able when a nation chooses a specific option to one issue. The result of the issue and the effect of the decision on the nation will be a catalyst for an Issue-option issue.

    Examples of issue-based issues include:

  • Statistic-based issues

    Statistic-based issues can be unlocked when a nation has reached a pre-determined statistic relevant to the issue. Depending on how a player chooses to lead his/her nation, different statistics will apply to the nation. For example, a nation which is led in a dictatorial fashion will most likely receive an issue which relates to tyrannical nations, for example, the issue Too Low on Laws, Says Citizens. However, a nation that has high political freedoms would not receive such issues.

    Examples of statistic-based issues include:

  • Special issues

    Special issues do not occur often and are a rarity. For example, World Assembly Woes are only unlock able by member-states of the World Assembly.

    Similar to special issues, there are easter egg issues which reward nations with a unique badge to be displayed on nations' main page. There are several easter egg issues available. However, the methods of attaining them vary. For a more detailed discussion on easter egg issues, please refer to this discussion.

Telegrams

Telegrams are private messages that can be sent between players. When a nation is founded, it will receive approximately two dozen telegrams from regions seeking to recruit new nations.

A player can choose to filter telegrams he/she receives by accessing Telegram Preferences. There are four categories a player can select:

  • Recruitment: Recruitment telegrams are sent by nations attempting to convince players to join their regions.

  • WA Campaign: WA proposal authors may send WA-member nations telegrams of this sort to lobby for a player's vote.

  • Region (official): Founders and (if allowed) World Assembly Delegates may send regional telegrams without the need for stamps. Unless selected, these telegrams will be sent to every nation residing in the region.

  • External: External telegrams are sent using stamps and in-which the author had not pre-selected the telegram label of 'recruitment' or 'campaign'.

A player may choose to block particular nations from sending him/her telegrams. A player may add a nation to the Ignore List by writing the nation's name in the search box of Telegram Preferences. Alternatively, the player can click on a telegram's timestamp which will link to a page showcasing the individual telegram, with there being a 'Block Sender' link near its bottom-right.

NationStates is a free game however there are upgrades available to a player. One such upgrade is an Inbox upgrade which is part of packages: Supporter, Postmaster, and Postmaster-General.

    Supporter will:
    • remove ads (for faster page loads);

    • reward with a supporter trophy for your nation page;

    • last forever;

    • permanently reserve nation name; and

    • give a player a 'warm, fuzzy feeling of supporting NationStates.'

    Postmaster:

    • includes the aforementioned benefits of Supporter;

    • expand folders to hold a 100 telegrams each (up from 20 telegrams);

    • create 3 additional custom folders; and

    • create a 'deleted items' folder which will retain a maximum of 100 deleted telegrams.

    Postmaster-General:

    • includes the aforementioned benefits of both Supporter and Postmaster;

    • expand folders to hold an unlimited number of telegrams;

    • create an unlimited number of custom folders; and

    • includes 500 telegram stamps.

Telegram stamps allow players to send multiple telegrams at one single time. Normally, a player would only be able to send a telegram to a maximum of eight nations. Mass telegrams using telegram stamps can reach substantial numbers of nations quickly and easily and provide Delivery Reports which detail who has received a telegram and who has not.

A player can personalize the telegram sent by applying %NATION% to the text of the telegram. This will automatically translate to the nation's name when he/she receives it.

    Similarly a player can select a particular group to receive the telegram:
    • region: <Name> will send a telegram to every nation residing in the region listed.

    • tag: New<Number> will send telegrams to the aforementioned number of newly founded nations.

    • tag: Refounded<Number> will send telegrams to the aforementioned number of refounded nations.

    • tag: NewDelegates<Number> will send telegrams to the aforementioned number of new World Assembly Delegates nations.

    • tag: Delegates will send a telegram to the every Delegate.

    • tag: WA will send a telegram to the every nation who retains current membership to the World Assembly.

    • tab: All will send a telegram to every nation in NationStates.

    • tag: Welcome will send an automatic greeting to new arrivals in their region. However, telegrams of these sort can only be sent by a Founder or Delegate of a region.

Population

A newly-founded nation in NationStates begins with a population of 5 million. Every 24 hours, the population of a nation increases. The higher the population rises, the greater the population increases per day, up until the population reaches 62 million.

The population of a newly-created nation increases by 1 million per day.

The population of a nation is related to the descriptor of its size. As a nation's population increases, it progresses through a series of size descriptors, which are: fledgling, tiny, small, large, very large, huge, massive, colossal, and gargantuan. As a nation's population increases, it eventually gains several new custom nation traits, including the capital city (250 million), the nation name pretitle (500 million), the nation's leader (750 million), and the national religion (1 billion).

Dossier

A nation's dossier is a compilation of brief information on other nations & regions which a player can select. It allows the player to easily move between nations/regions the player considers of interest and can be a useful tool in maintaining track of puppet nations a player may have.

The brief information provided in the dossier is limited to the nation's name, the nation's WA category (for example, left-wing utopia), when the nation was last active, the region in which the nation resides, and the WA status of the nation (whether the nation is a member of the World Assembly).

Similarly, the dossier provides brief information on regions that players choose to feature in their dossier. The information is limited to the name of the region, the population of the region, and the name of the region's World Assembly Delegate.

Another feature is Advanced Dossier. This feature allows for greater control of the nations which feature in a player's dossier. As opposed to having to independently select nations, a player can upload a text file to NationStates featuring nations' names. Alternatively, a player can download a text file that contains the identity of the nations in the dossier.

Settings

The settings page allows a player to modify aspects of his/her nation. A player can set the currency, motto, demonyms, national animal, et cetera. The settings page also provides players with the opportunity to change their nation's password, flag, and select banners.

Banners are a rotating, targeted, customizable, unlock-able set of images on the nation's page. There are over 250 banners, which unlock upon achieving various feats, such as developing a strong economy or reaching high levels of political corruption. There are also custom slots for uploading a players' own images, once they have reached particular population levels. For a full list illustrating every banner achievable, you are invited to Linkview this collection.

People, Government, & the Economy

People: A pie-chart and accompanying percentages illustrating the leading causes of death throughout a player's nation, for example, old age.

Government: An illustration and accompanying percentages showing the distribution of your budget, for example, education, environment, healthcare, public transport, and administration. The illustration also details the amount of a player's currency and the percentage of the player's total gross domestic product (GDP) spent on government expenditure.

Economy: An illustration of the division of the public, private, and state-owned sectors. Here, a player can also read the total GDP of the nation and the GDP per person.

Analysis

Each day, there are two updates in NationStates. The major update occurs at approximately 00:00-01:00 Eastern Standard Time/Eastern Daylight Savings Time (EST/EDT). The minor update occurs at approximately 12:00-13:00 EST/EDT. Due to a large number of nations and regions, these updates may take an hour.

In the major update, NationStates generates a World Census Report on a particular subject and will rank all nations and regions from highest to lowest. Such topics include 'Most Extreme', 'Most Cultured' and 'Best Healthcare'. If a nation scores highly in these reports, the player may expect to be rewarded with either a silver or gold badge which will feature on the main page of the player (top 10% and 5%, respectfully).

Region

In NationStates, regions is to a nation how a real-life country/city is to a person. It is a community of nations which generally incorporates at least five basic social values that all regions, regardless of their ideological foundation, are expected to provide and uphold for the benefit of their citizens. These values are security, freedom; order; justice; and welfare. This is not to say that there are no regions in whom's founding ideals differ from those stated. There are thousands of regions in NationStates, each with its own personality and direction, for example, a Pokemon-themed region, a Communist region, or a democratic region.

Different regions have different focus points, some choose to be specifically themed with a general-purpose whilst others are just a casual gathering place for nations. The defining aspect of regions is their home-pages (which you can locate by clicking on a region's link). The regional home-page showcases a wide range of customizable features:

  • World Factbook Entry;

  • Regional flag;

  • Dispatches;

  • Regional tags;

  • Embassies;

  • World Census Report;

  • Regional polls; and the

  • Regional Message Board (RMB)

Nations can select the region they want to belong to by various means; accidental stumbling upon, specific searches, recruitment telegrams, looking at regional tags, etc.

For a comprehensive guide to "Building a region", you are invited to view this forum thread.

World Assembly

Given the international diplomacy theme which underpins NationStates, an important aspect of the game is an institution called the World Assembly (WA) formerly known as the United Nations. This is a fairly large component of the game and therefore this guide will detail it under sub-sections (highlighted in bold)

Membership to the World Assembly is entirely voluntary. A player may choose to join this organisation and in doing so, gain them in-game functions of being able to endorse other nations as well as receive endorsements. However, the player also submits their nation to the effects generated by various WA proposals. This may have an inadvertent effect on a nation's statistics, for example, their military situation (ability to construct nuclear weapons may be limited by a WA General Assembly resolution). A player can choose to join the World Assembly by clicking on the 'Apply to join' button in the World Assembly page.

Delegate are elected by a region to serve as their representative at the World Assembly. Unlike ordinary members, they can approve newly-suggested resolutions. Delegates may also have administrative control over their region, though this is entirely dependent on the settings decided with the region's creation.

Becoming a delegate can be an easy or difficult process, depending on the circumstances. To be elected, a nation needs endorsements (a minimum of two) from the majority of members in their respective regions. Whilst a region composed of said-nation and a friend(s) can guarantee the nation the delegacy, larger regions with a vast collection of players are often much more challenging. Not only must the nation convince people to support their cause (and potentially have the current delegate demoted), the nation needs to hold this position by respecting the demands of the region.

Gaining endorsements, you've decided to join a bigger region with little to no support from friends, here are a few tips to receive the endorsements needed: (note: the following is the author's own opinion)

  1. Patience is a godsend. Don't expect to march in some random region and have endorsements thrown at you. You need to prove your place.

  2. Get friendly with some of the other nations, people who you can count on to support your ascent to power.

  3. If they have one, find out about the current delegate. Is he well-liked? Does he listen to the nation's wishes? Does he abuse his power? Use this to your advantage...

  4. NationStates truly is a game of politics and roleplaying. To that end, feel free to blackmail and bribe your peers.

Councils, the World Assembly is divided into two entities; the General Assembly and the Security Council [3]:

The General Assembly is concerned with passing international law: resolutions to improve human rights, environmental standards, and the like. They have an immediate and material effect on all WA member nations, and can change your laws and category. For example, if you are a protectionist nation, and the WA passes a resolution promoting free trade, you may find your nation becoming abruptly more capitalist.

Broadly speaking, the General Assembly does not concern itself with individual nations or regions, but humanity as a whole. It has a vibrant roleplaying community in the General Assembly forum, which debates and drafts legislation.

The Security Council, on the other hand, is very much about specifics. It passes resolutions that Condemn or Commend particular nations or regions, and authorises Liberations, by removing a Delegate's authority to set a regional password (usually to restore order following its capture by invaders). Compared to the General Assembly, it is more concerned with gameplay (regional politics, invasions) than roleplaying.

Both Councils function similarly in that they accept proposals, which enter the voting floor to be voted on as resolutions. Each Council may have a resolution at vote at the same time.

To vote for a resolution, click on its link within the World Assembly tab. You'll be taken to a page giving you the full details, including the category, resolution number, and who proposed the resolution. Below that, you'll find a complete explanation, with the option of voting For or Against.

To pass your own resolution, you need at least two endorsements from members of your region. Once you have those, you can propose your resolution to the World Assembly. However, before people are given the chance to vote on it, it needs to be approved by 6% of the World Assembly Regional Delegates. If it reaches the necessary number of approvals, it will be brought onto the voting floor, where all members of the WA can make your resolution law, or fail to pass it. (note: the following is the author's own opinion)

When you decide to pass your resolution, you have two choices. You can create a brand new one, or you can attempt to repeal an old one.

Creating a new resolution is basically one that does not currently exist. If you do so, make sure you look through all previous resolutions. There's nothing more embarrassing than attempting to introduce laws on toilet paper which already exist...

If you too are angered about the increase of tax on tea bags, then you have the chance to get things changed! You can vote to re-appeal a resolution, which will render the resolution in question null and void. This is normally when old laws conflict with new methods.

Tips on Passing a Resolution:

  1. Gather up support within your region. If it was proposed by someone, all the better!

  2. Spread the word on the forums. There is a section dedicated to the discussion of resolutions. You can make friends and get some critique on your law, which will let you make the edits necessary to give it an air of professionalism.

  3. Don't get too frustrated if your resolution doesn't make it to the voting floor. You can always try again.

Influence is a game-determined categorisation applied to each nation. A nation's influence is a measure of how 'well-respected' a nation is considered in its current region. Nations earn influence in a region the longer they remain there, and the more WA endorsements they have accumulated. When a nation leaves, though, its influence in that region will begin to decline.

Influence serves an important gameplay purpose. The ability of WA Delegates to eject and ban nations from their region, and to password-protect it, is limited by their Influence. Delegates consume some of their Influence to exercise their power, so the more often the Delegate uses their influence, the more difficult it is for them to wield those powers in the future.

When a nation moves to a region, it does not influence within that region. Nations accrue influence in a region by remaining in the region, and by receiving endorsements from the region’s members. Arguably, being a member of the WA has no value unless the nation gains endorsements, the more endorsements one gets, the more influence one will accrue.

The regional influence is equal to the sum of the national influence of all its members (updated each game-update (refer to Analysis)), and is displayed as a ranking on a scale ranging from ‘moderate’ to ‘Extremely High’.

The national influence ranking (ranging from ‘Minnow’ to ‘Hermit’) is determined by the ratio of national influence to total regional influence and the previous WA update.

Roleplay

[The following advice has been kindly provided by Euroslavia and reproduced here with his express permission. Should you wish to further explore this dynamic aspect of NationStates, you are invited to read the many roleplay guides available in the forum.]

Welcome to 'Getting Started with Nationstates'. This (advice) will provide the basic framework for general rules and learning and all things in regards to how to properly Role Playing in the International Incidents and Nationstates forums. The following is merely a snippet of advice, please visit this forum thread for more comprehensive information and advice relating to roleplaying in International Incidents.

  • Work things out OOC: First piece of advice is fairly simple; you will find that when you start a roleplay with a nation you may have combat with, you will find that most of the time you will both have different technologies and ideas on how the roleplay will go. As such it’s important to work out any problems OOC before you start the RP. You can do this in MSN, telegram or even in a separate thread… if you don’t do this you may waste a lot of time arguing with the other nation over the power of your weapon, why they aren’t taking enough damage and so on.

  • Spelling, Grammar and Format: This is a quick addition, but basically if you want to be understood you should make it easier to read for everyone else. You should try and make sure that you’re spelling it reasonable, your grammar is ok and your format makes it easy for people to read. The best way to achieve this is to use a program like Win Word to spell check your post and maybe even point out some grammar problems.

  • Its freeform baby!: Yeah, I know I should have pointed this out earlier, but it goes without saying. You can RP anything you want and there is little anyone can do about it. Remember, while you can roleplay anything, you can also ignore anything. So while you can RP your nation being the best in the universe, everyone else can ignore such a claim and choose not to RP with you. That’s the beauty of freeform, and it’s the greatest frustration. This is why you should be reasonable.

  • Be descriptive: This isn’t really as important, but it makes the thread a whole lot better. The more description you put into it, the more interesting it is to read and the more you will enjoy the roleplay on the whole.

  • Have fun: It gets forgotten a lot of the time but Nationstates is just a game; albeit an addictive game which takes a lot of time and effort for some people. The important thing is to have fun; if you are not having fun then you should try something else. Tired of having wars with everyone? Chill out and try something else, make peace with those you fight or have a peace conference… that way you automatically have a character/diplomatic roleplay.

To garner more information on general roleplaying, the author strongly recommends a visit to the forum thread Roleplaying Tips and Suggestions.

Roleplaying in NationStates is such an exciting and fun aspect of the game, as such, there are thousands of people all around you who would be happy to help you, you need only ask. Similarly, if you are stuck on something or would just like a bit of advice here and there, the forum contains dozens of guides and helpful tips. Always remember, the world is full of possibilities and you are only limited by your imagination.

BBCode

Players not accustomed to formatting may have noticed custom markup tags being used in the regional message board, the NS Forum or in Dispatches. These custom markups help to format a text to make it bold, italics, add images, add url, etc. These are known as BBCode or Bulletin Board Code.

BBCode or Bulletin Board Code is a lightweight markup language generally used internet-wide format posts in blogs and message boards.
The BBCode tags usually have a beginning and ending tag similar to HTML. BBCodes are usually indicated by the square brackets [ ] and contain a keyword within the [] tag, and the ending tags have the same keyword with a backslash ” / ” preceding the keyword. These BBCodes are parsed during the run-time to produce HTML or XHTML that can be understood by the browsers. It should be noted that players need to nest the tags properly as otherwise, it might not work.

[The following information has been kindly provided by Testlandia and reproduced here with his express permission. The following list is not exhaustive. To view the full list, please consult with this dispatch, the Complete List of NSCodes.]

These BBCode-like tags can be used in Dispatches, Telegrams, Regional Message Board (RMB) posts, Regional World Factbook Entries (WFEs), and World Assembly proposals. Not all tags are valid for all message types: see below.

    Term

    Definition

    Ban

    An act which prevents a nation from entering a given region.

    Cease-To-Exist (CTE)

    The deletion of a nation after a period of inactivity lasting 28 days or 60 days if vacation mode is set. A nation can be 'refounded' by the owner by login.

    Eject

    An act of ejecting a nation from a region. This can be performed by the Founder (with cost to the nation) or by the Delegate (with an influence cost incurred on the Delegate). Nations who have been ejected will relocate involuntarily to The Rejected Realms.

    Feeders

    Regions that new nations are founded in. Sinkers include The Pacific, The North Pacific, The South Pacific, The West Pacific, and The East Pacific.

    Founder

    A nation who 'founded' the region and hence is the original inhabitant. The Founder, depending on access to the administration panel, has the power to ban, eject, banject nations, change tags, suppress RMB posts, change the flag, construct and close embassies, and change the World Factbook Entry.

    Sinkers

    Regions that nations returning to the game, or in the case of The Rejected Realms are ejected from a different region go to. Sinkers include Lazarus, Osiris, Balder, and The Rejected Realms.

    Out-of-Character (OOC)

    Post of this sort is used to convey messages unrelated to the roleplay, such as informing fellow players that you will be out of town for a week and therefore will not be online in NationStates.

    Puppets

    Nations created to be used secondary to the primary nation. Some players choose to use puppet nations as WA nations while others choose to use it to boost a region's population. Reasons vary and there is nothing wrong with creating puppets for one's purpose.

    Regional Message Board (RMB)

    A chat function visible in a region (scroll down the region's homepage). This aspect allows nations to communicate and displays their flag as well as allowing them to 'like' others' messages and quote them.

    Telegrams

    A private messaging system that acts as emails for NS.

    Warzones

    Regions which have no founder and cannot be refounded. In these regions, ejections/bannings do not incur an influence drain on the Delegate but can only last a limited amount of time. Warzones include Warzone Airspace, Warzone Africa, Warzone Europe, Warzone Asia, Warzone Australia, and Warzone Sandbox.

    World Assembly

    An institute of global governance in NationStates, similar to the United Nations in real-life.

    World Assembly Delegate

    A nation who possess the largest number of WA endorsements in the region, thereby allowing it to represent the region in the World Assembly.

    World Factbook Entry (WFE)

    World Factbook Entry is an area visible at the top of a region's homepage which describes the region, etc. Typically, it would state members of the region's governing entity, links to an offsite forum, etc.

    This guide, once flourishing and relevant, fell into disrepair and outdatedness. Lookie here for a modern one:

    If you decided to join the rp, here's another guide

    WELCOME TO ZUKCHIVA'S GUIDE TO RMB RP!
    **Please note that this guide is unofficial (for now >:]).**

    Sooooooo. Welcome to my guide to the RMB! This is a work in progress [WIP]!(It's a tad bit difficult to type so much in a few days, so I need to stretch it out.) I decided to make a guide to RMB RP since the forum rp (more on that later) is getting their own upgrade. So why don't we?

    But first, my credentials, so you can choose for yourself whether to believe I can actually write a guide on RMB RP.

    I've been a part of modern RMB RP since before its inception around a 1 year+ ago. I was actually a part of RMB RP before that (massive science fiction godmod roleplay.)

    I stole (from a free site where you ARE allowed to do so) and updated the map that is the predecessor to the predecessor of our current map, Valsora! (More on that later as well.)

    I was once a sort of ambassador from the TEP government to the RMB before giving my post to The angel of charit.

    I was selected to be an RMB RP mod until Charity made their rule-set that was adopted by RMB RP.

    Fun fact, my favorite Jojo character is this dude:

    (Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;-;)

    Now that I've shown you my credibility (or not), you can choose to read on or stop here! I obviously can't and won't judge you for what you decide. Plus, even making it this far is a testament to you being able to stand up to my boring tones and droning words. So kudos to you! Let's get going.

    **Note: There will be TLDR; spoilers under each section. It's up to you if you wanna read them only and skip the rest, though if you don't know much about RMB RP, I'd suggest you read the whole guide.

    I believe I have enough experience in RMB RP to write a guide about it.

    Mainstream The East Pacific Regional Message Board Roleplay is the name for the largest roleplay that occurs in The East Pacific's [TEP's] Regional Message Board [RMB]. This roleplay is what this guide is about, and is what I mean when I say RMB Roleplay [RMB RP]. Other RMB RPs can be found in the "ROLEPLAY ALTERNATIVES", which is at the bottom of this guide.

    So, remember, RMB RP can mean any roleplay happening in any region. But for the purposes of this guide, it refers to Mainstream TEP RMB RP.

    RMB RP is mainly a nation-based roleplay. Meaning that it deals with the interactions of nations with each other. While it is based on nations, character roleplay is sometimes used to highlight important events, such as diplomatic meetings and in some cases, war. This is because this gives a more personal and detailed outlook on such events.

    Character roleplay is basically roleplay describing the reactions of a character to events roleplayed by a roleplayer. These can include a character hurting another character, characters talking to each other, or a character signing a treaty by another character. And it's fine to roleplay as a citizen or a resident of your nation! Just make sure that your character is appropriate for the situation at hand.

    For example, you wouldn't want a normal citizen to be leading your nation in diplomatic negotiations. In the same vein, you don't want a bunch of muscular men competing in a women's beauty contest.

    If I were you, I'd run.

    However, sometimes you will speak as your government instead of through characters. In this case, you talk as you would in any texting application to show your nation's thoughts on certain ideas. Through your nation and characters, you create, you will be able to roleplay on the RMB sufficiently.

    Mainstream RMB RP is based around nation interactions, though sometimes characters can be used for roleplay.]

    IC is an abbreviation for In-Character [IC]. Basically, IC means ANYTHING that is directly impacting the roleplay world. For example, your nation declares war on another nation. This is an IC action.

    OOC is an abbreviation for Out-Of-Character [OOC]. OOC means ANYTHING that does NOT affect roleplay in any way (also known as nothing that is a roleplay post of any sort) is considered OOC. For example, you say "Hello Jim!" to your friend on the RMB, but it is not a roleplay post- it's literally you saying hi to him as human interaction and is not in any way a roleplay action. This is an OOC action.

    IC actions should have NO effect on ANYONE in real life. They should not affect anyone's feelings. Of course, we are human beings and end up growing attached to our nations and other nations. That's ok- just try to limit your level of emotion. In roleplay, you WILL, eventually, loose in some way or another. When that occurs, you could become very angry OOCily, and hurt someone else OOCily.

    It can really hurt sometimes, even if it's online.

    It is extremely important to distinguish an action ICily from OOCily. Not doing so can cause a lot of anger, conflict, and even suffering in some cases. If you are confused about whether someone's post is IC or OOC, ALWAYS ask them what it was. DON'T react, you can cause very needless conflict for a simple mistake.

    And even if someone else's post IS OOC, try not to react and log-off if needed. If the nation in question does not retract their statement and/or apologize, tell any RMB RP mod how it affected you and the nation in question will receive consequences.

    IC is actions affecting roleplay, OOC are any non-roleplay statements and actions. Be careful to know if a post is IC and OOC, and try not to be angry if someone insults you OOCily.

    Valsora is the map for RMB RP! Being ran by Valsoran Cartographers, it's pretty much the official map of RMB RP. While it isn't officially required to be on the map in order to participate in RMB RP, most nations prefer to be on it anyhow. I'll outline the claim process (with screenshots!) to help you make a claim.

    **Note: Before you do this, make sure you know what continent you will be claiming on. Claims are based on culture, and you must have realistic geography wherever you place your nation. The continent names and their cultures are shown below:
    Nonscio: American and European
    Yaestrovakia: Eastern European and Slavic
    Araseaos: European, German, and American
    Solitas: German
    Orientalis: East Asian and Pacific Islander
    Unistan: Middle East, South Asian, African, and Arabic
    Antarctic: None

    1. Open the Valsora map in a new tab. (Click on the dispatch shown below and scroll to the bottom.
    nation=valsoran_cartographers/detail=factbook/id=main

    2. Open a paint program (Paint.net or Microsoft Paint will work.) I'll use MS Paint.

    3. Copy the Valsora map from the dispatch.

    4. Paste it onto your paint application (you can use CTRL+V to do so).

    5. Select your drawing tool. Make sure it is thick enough to be seen easily but thin enough so it doesn't obstruct your claim. (The smiley face represents the thickness I'm using. You may want to make it a tad bit less thick. No need to send any type of smiley face to Nova, unless you want too. :D)

    6. Draw your claim! Keep in mind your culture and region- if you can't remember where the continent is, look to the Valsora dispatch to find the continent map. (I've staked my claim in Unistan for the example. You DO NOT have to put a claim in Unistan if your nation doesn't match its culture as shown in the list above; same for the other continents.

    7. Circle your claim! Use a different color than the one you used for your claim. Make sure it's a noticeable color such as bright red.

    8. Save your image as a PNG. I'll save my image as "Valsora example claim".

    9. Go to any image uploading website (I'll be using imgur.com in this example, but you can use other sites!)

    10. IF YOU'RE USING IMGUR, click "New Post" on the top light grey bar near the left.

    11. Click "Browse".

    12. Type in your image's name in the bottom search bar. (Note that none of the pictures shown is the image I want. That's ok- just type the FULL name of your image in the bottom bar and select the option that matches the exact name of your image (make sure it says .png at the end.)

    13. Click the "open" button. Wait for the screen to stop loading (shown by the moving green bar at the top.)

    14. Right click the image and select "Open image in a new tab."

    15. Click on this: Valsoran Cartographers

    16. Scroll to the bottom and click "write telegram."

    17. Copy and paste the following message template into the box (Delete anything in {these squiggly things} and replace them with what they say:

    Hello! Here's my claim for Valsora!

    {Insert URL link from step 14.}.

    The claim is circled in {whatever color you chose to use to circle it.}

    My nation's name is {Insert nation name.}, and its culture is {insert equivalent of your nation's culture to its real-life culture.}

    Hope this doesn't trouble you too much! Thanks!

    Alternatively, if you do not know where you wish to be, simply send the cartographers a claim telling your name, your culture, and that "I am fine with wherever you place me.", and the cartographers will place you accordingly- no image required in this case.

    The RMB RP Map is named Valsora. To send a claim, send Valsoran Cartographers a picture of your claim with your nation name and its real life equilivant in culture.

    Now to the part you need! Nation creation! In RMB RP, you don't need much (If any) nation development to begin roleplaying! However, I would recommend you to come up with these nine simple parts of your nation before you get started. Let's go!

    **Note: The RMB RP mods are here to help. Send them a telegram or direct message on Discord if you need them to help you with any of these aspects. Alternatively, I'm available too, and am always willing to help (Or most of the time. Still counts! >:[)

    1. Culture: This is probably the most important aspect of your nation! Your culture is your people's way of life and it will affect basically in your nation.

      It's not necessary as of now to make a totally new culture though. A culture is a massive thing and can't be created in a say by most people. Instead, copy a real-life culture from a country on Earth for now. Don't worry, you can change it later!

      Remember to smile! :)

    2. Name: Your nation needs a name to be identified by other nations and characters. To make one, try looking up names from your general region of culture (Ex: Look up European countries and examine their name structures) and then come up with your own! If you can't, you can search up a random name generator or ask for help from the RMB RP mods!

    3. Location: Your location is a very important aspect. With it, it decides generally who your first allies or enemies are, trading distances, and how your nation will operate militarily in the world. Choose wisely- your nation can and will be affected by it later. (But don't take it too seriously! You can always ask to move if you want, just not often.)

      The above aspects should've been decided when you were making a Valsora claim. If you haven't made one yet, you can continue below. But make sure to send Nova a claim with the previous three aspects! :D

    4. Geography: Your geography influences how your military will act, and how invasions of your nation will occur (if they happen.) It should also affect your population density, a.k.a. how much of your population is in a certain area. For example, mountainous regions can have some people, but generally, they have fewer people than forest regions.

      To find what geography is acceptable at your location, ask surrounding nations about their geography! Alternatively, you can also use an Earth climate map to find your general climate and geography. Your nation's geography needs to be realistic. If you're in an area where it's generally desert and small mountains, you aren't going to be a snowy nation.

      Ah, look at that nature! It's sad that Valsora's biomes are constantly ravaged by war and memes...

      If your nation's wanted geography is not on the continent your general culture is on, then simply put your nation on where you want it geographically. Then say that your nation is a former colony from a nation that shares some of your values. (I.e. if I wanna be a desert Yaestrovakian nation, I'll place my claim in Unistan, but claim that I'm a colony of a long-lost Yaestrovakian nation.) There we go!

    5. Population: Your population decides your military size. For most wars, the more soldiers you can send out, the higher chance you have of winning (but that isn't always true.) To decide your population, you need to look at your location and size. Generally, the smaller you are, the larger your population density is. Similarly, the larger your population, the smaller your population density is.

      Since there are different population densities for every nation (some nations are rural, some are urban), a tiny nation can hold up to as many as 50-60 million people. In the same way, a very large nation can hold as low as 20 million people, depending on where all of its people are. But generally, your nation's population should be around 20 million to 700-800 million, depending on your size and location.

      Location is important because location, as discussed earlier, decides your geography. Your climate and geography are huge factors in your population: if you're in a harsh region, chances are that your population will be much smaller than another nation with a similar size to yours in a bountiful region (like a forest or plains). Be sure to keep this in mind!

      After you decide your population, be sure to send it to one of the RMB RP mods. They will help you decide a more reasonable population if needed and will keep it in store if you wish for them too.

      If you want to see the population of others', look into other nations' factbooks and ask them directly to find their population!

    6. Government: This is not a necessary function to roleplay, but it definitely is recommended. It would be nice to know what type of government your nation is. Dictatorship? Democracy? Theocracy? Monarchy? Anarchism? There are many different choices and each has its own unique set of values!

      You don't necessarily need to decide the specifics of how your government functions now- just describe somewhere (a factbook is heavily recommended), it's basic systems. For example, who is the executive? The legislative? Who deals with the justice of the law? With that, you can roleplay and continue to develop your government!

      Sometimes, heroes take the law into their own hands.

    7. Leader: Your leader is an extremely important aspect of your nation. Many times, you will use your leader to communicate for your nation, whether it be in a meeting or (sometimes) on the battlefield. Like many things, a leader will take some time to develop. But you don't need to worry about that for now... or for a long time!

      Just come up with a name, and then stick with a personality you attach to that name. Now, decide how that person looks. And there you go! You have a leader!

      Keep in mind that while most if not all leaders lead their government in either the most powerful or most known position, sometimes exiled leaders can also represent an aspect of your nation. (Example: The leader of the government represents oppression of the people, the leader of the revolution represents the people's true will.)

    8. Economy: The economy of your nation is not that much important but you should decide it now. It can and will help you to set up roleplays in your nation later. (For example, capitalists rebelling against the socialist government.) There are many different ways an economy can function- so you'll have to research on your own. But for simplicity's sake, here's the two main ones are Capitalism and Socialism.

      Capitalism is where businesses have total freedom from the government. But in capitalist economies, the government does not decide which industries are run completely by the government. It cannot. No taxes, no regulations, absolutely nothing. Obviously, this doesn't really work out in most nations, so most "capitalist" nations really have a large free market, with restrictions set in place to control businesses.

      Socialism is where entire industries are owned by the government. Depending on the nation, this can mean all businesses to only highly essential businesses.The economic tries to make life easier for the people by removing the factor of price, so that everyone gets the same quality in their services. An extreme form of socialism, communism, has the government take over all industries and everyone has an equal working wage.

      DING DING DING! FIGHT!

    9. Military: Your military is VERY important. It basically defends your nation against another military. However, military equipment and tactics are a very diverse topic. You'll have to research them yourself. Sadly, I have not had the time to do some research myself, so this guide won't help you out in that regard. But, scroll down to the Discord Servers or click on it. I'll show you a server you can join and ask two people for help, there.

      However, my recommendation is that until you get your custom made military, that you try to utilize the military of a real life country who shares your similar climate, and hopefully, ideals and culture.

      Something to note: know that you'll also have to research how military units work, because RMB RP's wars are based on modern technology and basic modern warfare tactics. Again, you can ask the two awesome people I mentioned above to point you to guides to build up your knowledge.

    There we go! These are things you should make a basic outline of before roleplaying! :D

    Before you roleplay, I recommend making sure your nation has something resembling these nine factors: A name, a culture, a location on Valsora, its geography and climate, a population size, a military (with basic equipment and basic troop numbers), an economy, a government, and a leader.

    Just like almost any other roleplay, organization, or country in existence, RMB RP has certain rules that one must follow in order to be a successful roleplayer and have fun. The rules were developed by The angel of charit. The rules speak for themselves, but I'll go over the most important parts in order to emphasis them.

    **Note: The following rules are meant for Mainstream/Valsora RMB RP only, as the majority of this guide is. To find the rules for other roleplays, ask the roleplay leaders for them! I'll list them later. Now, let's get back to business. ;D

    The rule-set can be found right... here!

    1. The first part of these rules are about "Godmodding". Godmodding is basically as the rules define it.

      -Taking control of someone else's characters.
      -Breaking the rules to gain an advantage.
      -Not letting someone respond.

      And as such. Please remember, the consequences for godmodding can vary, but you face high chance of being banned from Mainstream RP just by doing it. So please, don't do it.

      The ruleset also talks about OOC and IC, which I have addressed in the sections above. As a refresher, IC is for roleplay actions, and OOC is for non-roleplay stuff. Try to avoid getting them mixed up! And if you do, no worries. Just try to be more careful whenever OOC and IC situations become mixed up and confusing. :D

    2. The second part of the rules is about "Technology and Weapons". It is pretty simple: any technology that does not exist or exists in a proto-type stage in real life cannot be made for major use (besides mechs, but the usage of mechs is heavily discouraged.)

      Now, another important thing in this section is nuke restrictions. As quoted by the rules: "Nuclear weapons are restricted, and capped at 50 kilotons. [-]Note, restricted in this sense refers to three things. Nuclear weapons must be able to be countered (shot down) they cannot be deployed more then five times in a war, and the size cap [50 kilotons]."

      This means that your nukes cannot be large, and there is a limit to how much can be used in a war. The reason this rule has been set is because nuclear devices are very efficient devices in ending a story, and ending a nation. No one wants their entire nation to collapse into rubble because another roleplayer couldn't handle loosing a war. However, exceptions can be made to this, but you must ask one of the RMB RP Mods before trying to exit the boundaries of nuclear restrictions. Otherwise, you will be godmodding.

      Fun fact: Nuclear weapons are quickly shot down by a defense system set up by the Angel of charit (created in 2019.). So unless you want to waste your nation's money by firing nukes, it is a good idea to follow the rules on this matter!

      Nuclear war is devastating. But [INSERT RANDOM IDEOLOGY] is much more destructive.

    3. Part 3(ALLIANCES) is simple as well. 10 members per alliance, no more. This is to prevent massive alliances locking in stalemates, which effectively kills roleplay for a while. There are no exceptions to this rule.

      That being said, short-term coalitions do not count towards the limit. For example, if 20 nations teamed up to war against 2 nations, it's fine. But if those 20 nations later decide to stay in a coalition after the war, it is not fine. Because at that point, they become an alliance and surpass the limit. But no worries: it's difficult to surpass the limit.

      There are only so many nations! :D

    4. Part 4(GRACE PERIOD) talks about the grace period for new nations. In short, the moment you start roleplaying as a new nation, the timer starts ticking for two weeks. Within said two weeks, no one can attack you in any way or form. You're very safe from harm. The time period is given so that you are not overwhelmed by roleplay, and can get a good gist of what's going down before being thrust into war.

      Note, however, that if you do any sort of war act, you irrevocably loose your grace period.

      In the same vein, if you decide to never engage in a war, then no nation can attack you. However, you must talk to the RMB RP Mods before enacting such a state. Based on the circumstances and your track record, the mods will determine if you deserve an exception.

    5. Part 5(Military, size, economy, resources. WIP) is very straightforward as well. Your military can only make up 3% of your population, including personnel. There are absolutely no exceptions to this rule. This is because having too many soldiers would crash any nation's economy, so you would have to have an obscenely gigantic economy to field more soldiers past your population limits, which would be godmodding.

      **Note: Yes, your economy has to be realistic too. If you need help deciding your economy's output, talk to the RMB RP mods.

      Another short thing, RMB RP does not use NationStates statistics. All stats should be coming from you or a roleplay mod, not NationStates. But, if you do choose to base your states on Nationstates', you HAVE to make sure they are realistic. Otherwise, you're godmodding!

    6. Part 6(VOIDING) basically talks about voiding processes. If someone is godmodding in their post, simply tell them that you are voiding that specific part of their post, or their post as a whole. Make sure to show why it is godmodding. If they disagree, bring it up to one of the RMB RP mods, who will solve the issue.

      If you believe that a nation has godmodded too much and deserves to be banned from RMB RP, contact the RMB RP mods. They will deal with the situation. Make sure to provide evidence to back up your case.

      One way to see voiding is that you're throwing what you're voiding into a black hole. Hoping that it will never see the light of day again.

    7. Part seven(MAPPING) talks about the map. In short, it is very recommended to get a spot on Valsora to roleplay. The map is owned by Nova-columbi, but I am currently updating it. Here's the map dispatch (again), for easy access!

    And that's it! This should (hopefully), help to prevent you from godmodding in your future roleplays. :D On to the next section!

    Wow! You did it, you did it! You read the main part of my guide! Congratulations are in order! But, you can keep reading the rest of the guide if you want... just a suggestion. :P

    RMB RP has one active Discord server available for your usage. The link is right... Linkhere. The serve is ran by Angel and, shocker, the RMB RP mods! While a lot is talked about there, RMB RP events do sometimes pop up, and it's a very easy place to each a good portion of the RMB RP community. It's definitely recommended to go here. Check it out!

    RMB RP also has a sister discord server available! Meant for TEP Forum Roleplay (which is pretty cool as well), we have our own little alcove of channels there. However, it is not very active, but the community often talks about non-roleplay stuff and hosts VC sessions every now and then. It's very cool! The link for the above server will be right... [url=https://discord.gg/epQSprN]here!

    And yet, another discord server... the official Valsora server! Yes, we have a mappy map server, which I think is very cool. :) You can find it Linkhere. In this server, you can, like any other server, chat with others! You can also access an incomplete history of map updates, add to the general worldbuilding of the continent, annnnd give us suggestions about the map!

    And last but not the least, the official TEP server! Yes, I know, I know. You want to finish this darn guide and get to roleplaying! But, I just want to make sure you are aware that the East Pacific is not just about roleplaying. There is government, military, and just hanging out! You don't have to worry about it at all, but if you want to become more involved in the future, the link is right Linkhere. You're welcome to join!

    **Note: While Discord is a very good program to communicate with others and will enhance your experience, you should always ask permission of your parents. In addition, no 12 year olds or below are allowed on any Discord server, per company policy. Please do not join a Discord server if you are not 13 or older, as you put the entire server at risk of deletion. Thank you!

    Discord is awesome, but we all know that the RMB is where it is at. ;D

    And now, for the collection of a few resources in-case you don't want to zig-zag!

    So now you've reached the true end to my guide. There is another section after this, but it's mainly for other RMB RP roleplays and forum roleplay. So if you wanted a guide to mainstream roleplay, here you go! This is it...

    Thank you for reading this piece of work. It has taken me a couple of hours, but I say it was worth it. I love you all a lot, even if I do not know you. Because guess what? We are all born to be awesome. But sometimes, we need help along the way, which is why I made this guide. So that you all can have help in order to become awesome at RMB RP. ^-^

    And, because I love you so much, I'll leave you a list of tips that I've gathered in currently my one and a half year's of experience in this RMB. Please remember, however, that these are personal tips about various subjects, and they may not work out for you. And that's okay, alright? Alright.

    1. Do not break your grace period. It is one of the most valuable things you will have as a new nation, because it gives you time to get acclimated and see if you want to stay in the region. Trust me, it is no fun to join and within two days, loose half your claim to your neighbor.

    2. When you are trying to make your own unique culture down the road, start with your people's attitudes and their history. The way people view things, even as a group, changes what habits and traditions they follow. And your history can change their attitudes over time as well, so just think on that when you set out on that difficult journey.

    3. Don't godmod. Just don't. You will loose a lot of respect in the community if you do. Now, accidental godmod is okay (we all make mistakes, after all), but don't purposefully godmod to the point where you are making everyone start hating you. It won't work out well.

    4. Build relations with those nearby you. Especially if you plan on engaging with others in war, do it. Build up alliances and mutual defense pacts. These nations may one day be the deciding force between whether an invader succeeds in invading your nation, or whether he/she even decides to attack you in the first place.

    5. Be firm and consistent when dealing with other nations. If you've made a promise commit or own up to it and say you can't complete it. Being hypocritical and being wishy-washy when interacting with others will make you loose reputation OOCily and ICily.

    6. Control your emotions. It's very difficult for many people to separate IC situations from OOC feelings. But if you become unable to control your OOC emotions and feel intense anger or sadness, please log off. Don't escalate the situation. And sadly, if it comes down to it, leave our RMB if it means keeping your mental sanity. RMB RP is usually very fun, but it can get pretty nasty at points, so if you feel that you can't take it, then just pack up and go.

    We will understand.

    7. Listen to the mods. They are experienced roleplayers and are either trying to help you, or the community. Please, try not to place them in a difficult place. Because when you shove someone too hard, they will come back at you harder, and it makes bad situations even worse for everyone.

    8. Don't feel bad if no one listens to you nor likes your posts for the first month or two when you roleplay. The RMB ignores newcomers a lot, because many nations appear and then disappear within 30 days. If you stick around for two months or more, then people will start noticing you and liking your posts.

    9. The key to getting respect ICily is a mix of IC and OOC actions. OOCily, don't be a jerk and take advice when given to it. If you don't like advice, reject it in a kind and considerate manner. Also, be active a lot (IF POSSIBLE- don't let NS take over your life), and talk with others. Get to know them.

    ICily, roleplay with good grammar and capitalization. Try to make your writing flow, and make it the best you possibly can. No one expects you to pump out three 1000 word roleplays a week, but just keep a constant flow of roleplay going.

    Doing this, you'll become a valuable RMB RPer very quickly.

    10. Try to make roleplay about story-telling. Not about winning or loosing wars, nor solely about gaining or loosing land. If you focus more on the story, then you will have fun way more often than if you treat roleplay like a combat game. And trust me, fearing that you will loose land is sensible, but it will hold you back from roleplaying big time.

    So I guess what I am saying is, learn to let go. Have fun. If you loose your land, try to make that into an epic roleplay, full of vengeance and anger and righteousness. Make roleplay fun.

    And welp, that's it! Thank you all again for reading this, it does mean a lot to me! Adios, y'all. Hope to see you around. :)

    Welcome to Valsora...

    Valsora is the premier roleplaying map of the East Pacific RMB, and is home to a wide variety of nations created by people all around the world. These factbooks contain all the information you need in order to get started, as well as much more! Hold conferences between nations that have had years of writing put into them. Go to war to increase the size of your empire. Develop a space program, flying to the far off moons of Eta and Iota. And most of all, join a warm and welcoming community of people who are passionate about worldbuilding, roleplaying, and just having a good time. To navigate the pages of this factbook, simply click on the various links contained above.
    page=dispatch/id=1648049
    The Claim Process:

    In order to claim a spot on the Valsora map, follow this process:
    • Decide what you want your nation will be. This is the first process of making a claim, as it will impact several key decisions. Do some worldbuilding. It doesn't have to be super in-depth, just think of the basic cultural values of your nation.

    • Once you have a basic understanding of your nation, compare its culture with that of cultures in the real world. Try to figure out what culture it most closely resembles.

    • Match this culture with the culture of one of the continents on the map. Each continent on the map roughly corresponds to a culture group in real life. Nonscio, Araseos, and Solitas are all inspired by Western Europe, with Araseos being generally more Germanic, Solitas being more colonial, and Nonscio having no specific leaning. Yastreovakia is inspired by Eastern Europe and Slavic culture. Orientalis is inspired by the Far East, whether that be China, Japan, Korea, or whatever other Far Eastern nation you can think of. Usnistan is inspired by African and Middle-Eastern culture. Antarctia is a frozen wasteland, and generally is not open to claiming except under specific circumstances.

    • Finally you are ready to send a telegram to Plazland detailing your nation, where it will be located, and why it will be located there. Exceptions can be made for placing nations in other cultural zones, but they are rare. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, please include a Linkpicture with your claim. This prevents confusing exchanges as the Cartographer attempts to decipher where exactly your nation will be, how large it is, and the shape of the borders. Additionally, there are a few optional additions that can only be added with an image claim. Namely, these are a capital city and internal borders.

    • Finally, why not join our LinkDiscord Server? It's just one click away, and it's where you can easily talk to the management of the map.

    General Rules:

    GENERAL RULES:

    Rules on CTE: If your nations ceases to exist, you will be removed from Valsora effective immediately, your land cannot be claimed by other nations, even if you are in a union.

    Removal Guidelines: If your nation is not deemed active on Valsora, and does not RP for at least 1 month, you will be removed from the map to save space. IF you need an exemption from this (eg. holiday, irl responsibilities) you should alert the cartographer.

    Rules on purchasing land: Large amounts of land may NOT be purchased on Valsora, there is no direct size limit in place, the rule is up to the cartographer. For example a nation may purchase a tract of land the size of a small city / county IF they extensively RP the purchase.

    Rules on Nuclear Weaponry: Nuclear weapons ARE permitted on Valsora, but with a cap of 50 kt and a limit of 1 use per conflict. For example Nation A can fire a nuclear missile at Nation B ONCE and no more, and it must be of a 50kt size or below. Please note nuclear weapons CAN be and often are shot down, so use it wisely.

    Rules on Metagaming: IF you come across information about say, a planned invasion on Discord, you may NOT take IC action upon such. You RP as an IC nation, and if you gain information OOC you may NOT act on it in roleplay, if you are found to have metagamed, you will be investigated and run the risk of being banned.

    Rules on Godmodding: Godmodding is strictly prohibited on Valsora. All roleplay must be within the realms of normality and reality, for example with a population of 100 million, your likely standing army would be around 1 million, not 10 million. Another example of godmodding is controlling another nations characters or actions, if you fire a missile at Nation B, they must decide what they do to counter the missile, not you. If you are found to be godmodding, you will be investigated and run the risk of being banned.

    Rules on Fantasy / Magic: In some rare examples, fantasy elements are permitted in Valsora, such as currently dragons and diety's in RP. Please note that any and ALL fantasy elements MUST go by the cartographer before use in RP. It must be approved before you are permitted to use it.

    Rules on Alliance Size: There have been multiple problems in the past due with the size of alliances; if there was no limit, then the map would be dominated by mega alliances. If they were too harsh, then they wouldn't allow for any substantial alliances to take form. With the current iteration of this rule, alliances are limited to around 8 members each. Additional, but separate, alliances cannot be created to subvert this ruling. This limit does not apply to observer states, as long as they are prohibited from activities an alliance might commence in its lifetime (Voting on bills, military conflicts, directly taking part, directly influencing, etc). This also prohibits a nation to be within multiple alliances at once, though this does not apply to treaty's as long as they follow the guidelines above

    Allowed Technology:

    Technology on Valsora follows MTRP guidelines (Modern Tech Roleplay). The general ruleset to follow, is that technology utilized in Valsoran RP is what can be used today, and in the near future (2030 max.) Specific examples are included below, but if you are unsure of a technology's use on Valsora, please contact the Cartographer before use.

    Examples of BAD MTRP:

    Robots / Cyborgs
    Advanced Laser Weaponry
    Clones
    Advanced Genetic Modification
    Most space weaponry

    Natural Expansion:

    Natural Expansion involves growing your nations borders through RP. You can utilize natural expansion in many ways, such as roleplaying colonization, land purchase or invasion! Natural Expansion is permitted as to give players an opportunity to grow themselves over time, though there are rules in place to avoid abuse of this.

    Natural Expansion is only permitted once every 2 months. This is to stop nations from abusing natural expansion and growing too quickly

    Here are some examples of Linkfair natural expansion, and Linkbad natural expansion

    Natural Expansion must be heavily roleplayed, natural expansion requests will not be accepted if the expansion is not roleplayed extensively. By such, I mean to recommend multiple fairly long posts, or a dispatch outlining how the land was gained, why it was gained, and so forth.

    Please note that the Cartographer(s) hold the right to refuse natural expansion requests if they so choose, whether it be due to size, a nations inactivity, or other reasons reliant on fairness.

    Leaving the Map:

    If at any time you would like to leave Valsora, please contact the Cartographer and let them know. Please note that you cannot reserve land for yourself later on, or a friend, nor any specific nation. You may not also transfer any land, weapons, currency or anything that may act as a positive to another nation before you leave unless specified otherwise by the Cartographer.

    Remember how I said the only legal way to become delegate was to be elected by citizens? There is also an illegal way: raiding. Raiders from other regions may attempt to take the delegacy—such attempts are called coups. In order to prevent that, the Viziers are in charge of regional security. They are the first line of defense against a coup. They elect among themselves four nations to have Border Control powers, which allow them to ban and eject nations from the region. They also help to build the community.

    Todd McCloud wrote:Viziers are those who are widely trusted in the region. They may have served as delegate in the past, but that's not essential. Usually, a delegate will select someone they know and trust in the region, someone who has demonstrated by all accounts that they're here for the region first. If they are nominated, they go to the Magisterium for a vote. If the Magisterium agrees, they are made into a delegate.

    It is rare for a vizier to be made into a vizier - actually, it's rarer than our delegate elections. If anyone here aspires to be a vizier, I think that's great, but it will take time and a strong track record. Simply having endorsements or being active isn't enough. It is probably the hardest thing to obtain in this region, but if you're looking to obtain it simply as a position, you're probably doing it wrong.

    Don’t forget to endorse them too! They help keep our region safe!
