Greetings Middle Earth! Today's poll - on the silly side again - is about one of Tolkien's literary devices, onomatopoeia. As there are many, this time round they are only taken from The Hobbit. And it doesn't even yet include the most famous one: Gollum, Gollum! That will have to wait until another round.

Gollum, Gollum!

Hey Red Star of the West from Philosophy 115, if you like, create a puppet nation to reside here and perhaps even take part in our leisurely conversations.

The more lovely Tolkien fans are around here, the merrier!

Great idea! I might do that over the weekend. Loved the poll Lady Galadriel!

Hello Middle Earth denizens! Red Star of the West's puppet here.

You found a Beleriand name that was free! Excellent.

It wasn't easy! Clearly Tolkien has made his mark on Nation States.

The Lady of Lorien and Lady eowyn

Haha! He has!

If any other friend of Middle Earth, wishing to reside here with a new nation, is still scraping the Boneyard in vain for nation names, sometimes you can get your desire if you only tweak it a bit. For example, a former long time delegate of Middle Earth was East beleriand. (East beleriand, where are you? Come back please, you are missed.)

Oh look, new trading cards.

Just flying thru on our way south.

~pitches tent, lites campfire~

We don't usually stop in on such regions as large as yours, but we've been flying a long way and hope that you don't mind a few visitors.

Hmm, I've been watchin' your gaggle. Good little squad you have there.

Here take my spare tent...

Or I guess that pond over there near The Shire will do.

Oh, visitors! Welcome, it's so nice to have you here! Can I interest you in some tea and cakes?

Mmm. Tea would be nice.

*scratches chin thoughtfully

Say, I think you may be able to help me with something... I have been looking for lembas bread for awhile now. It is the best option for a drifter like me when you have to pack light.

Although, I don't have much to trade for it...

I have a broken broomstick, and a cactus. I really don't wanna give up the cactus...

Lembas is that Elvish bread. You'll have to speak to the pointy-ears about that. However, they are often reluctant to share their secrets with outsiders... *grumbles about those Elvish types*

I can offer you some root-bread, perhaps? And of course, mead -- nothing better for the weary traveler.

Welcome!

Everyone knows that a Bombadil feast
Is the best old feast from the West to the East
Oh yes! It's the best, it's the best old feast
Where you'll start with the most and finish with the least

With peas so green and peppers so red
Throughout Middle Earth it is certainly said

Everyone knows that a Bombadil feast
Is the best old feast from the West to the East

Visitors always welcome, do watch out for barrowights

The arrival of our present visitors has me wondering...Who among Middle Earth do you think provides the best hospitality?

I suppose the Hobbits of the Shire would get my vote. Though Bombadil makes a good case for ole Tom -- a weird but courteous host, and he does provide most excellent song and feast. While the Elves likely excel at the creature comforts, though they're a bit wary of outsiders...

Drifter

Quickly he returned, bearing a large and laden tray. Then Tom and Goldberry set the table; and the hobbits sat half in wonder and half in laughter: so fair was the grace of Goldberry and so merry and odd the caperings of Tom. Yet in some fashion they seemed to weave a single dance, neither hindering the other, in and out of the room, and round about the table; and with great speed food and vessels and lights were set in order. The boards blazed with candles, white and yellow. Tom bowed to his guests. ‘Supper is ready,’ said Goldberry; and now the hobbits saw that she was clothed all in silver with a white girdle, and her shoes were like fishes’ mail. But Tom was all in clean blue, blue as rain-washed forget-me-nots, and he had green stockings.

It was a supper even better than before. The hobbits under the spell of Tom’s words may have missed one meal or many, but when the food was before them it seemed at least a week since they had eaten. They did not sing or even speak much for a while, and paid close attention to business. But after a time their hearts and spirit rose high again, and their voices rang out in mirth and laughter.

For sure Tom Bombadil is the merriest of hosts.

*floats in over the horizon*
Any room for a few billion hot air balloons? :D

Hiya. Just another traveller touring NS with Geese and Friends. Any good hiking trails around?

Some geese, a drifter, a sightseer, and some hot hair balloons all end up in Middle Earth. What a world...

Welcome all of you!

Whoever it is, I'm sure that we can all agree it's not The Sauron.

I have some of that bread, but I forgot where I put it...oh, here. (Gives the bread to Drifter) You can have it for free.

You have swayed me. Old Bombadil is the merriest of hosts.

Well, what a nice horseless-carriage you've got there. You really must show me how it works :P
