The first records of Civilisation from around in the area around Holing are from around 40,000 years ago. Holing was settled by the Paleo-Husis, who migrated from the Island of Husing when it was still connected by a land bridge to Holing in what is now known as the Sea of Husing. The Paleo-Husis eventually diversified into many different groups. The Paleo-Husis in the region of Holing would become the Hogle, most likely named for the Holgle, or Holingian Eagle, now the National Bird of Holing. The Hogle would spread out across the region of Holing, they would also move north to what is now Hoding.

Halvian Conquests

The Halvians, who descended from Proto-Halvians, begin to settle the area around 600 BCE. The Oriental Empire, one of the largest empires in H land’s history, conquered all of Holing in 500 BCE and integrated it into the empire. Due to this, the number of Halvians in the area around Holing was thought to have exploded in population, eventually outnumbering the Hogle peoples. The Oriental Empire’s collapse in 572 CE, would born the kingdom of the Haws.

Kingdom of Hawia

The Kingdom of Hawia would last from 572 CE to 899 CE. The Kingdom encompassed many parts of modern day Holing, it would later serve as an important basis of Holingian Nationalism and the eventual unification in 1756. The Kingdom would eventually split into 3 kingdoms, North Hawia, South Hawia and West Hawia. The three kingdoms would become part of the Holy Oriental Empire when it was formed in 961.

Holy Oriental Empire

The Holy Oriental Empire was a personal Union of the kingdom of Hakel and the kingdom of Tursia, designed to be an continuation of the Oriental Empire. It would also consists of other kingdoms and duchies, like the kingdoms of North Hawia, South Hawia and West Hawia. By the founding of the Holy Oriental Empire, these kingdoms had become known as Horing, South Holing and West Holing, with both ‘Horing’ and ‘Holing’ meaning ‘holy’ in English. Under the Holy Oriental Empire, the Holingian Language would be greatly influenced by English which was being adopted throughout the empire’s land. The Holy Oriential Empire would reach its golden age at the start of the new millennium in 1000 but would enter into a period of decline by the 1500s. By 1700, the Holy Oriental Empire was almost completely powerless. This lead to an Age of Enlightenment across all of H land, especially in the three kingdoms of Horing, South holing and North Holing.

The Hogle from 500 BCE to the 1700s

While the last few centuries were happening, the Hogle peoples had been living mostly isolated from the three kingdoms though wars do erupt between the tribes and the kingdoms. The Halvian Kingdoms saw themselves as superior to the Hogle and mostly and any Hogle people unlucky enough to have ventured into their territory were captured and used as slaves.

Road to Unification

In the midst of the Age of Enlightenment, many Holingians begin to question the importance and usefulness of a Monarchy like the Holy Oriental Empire. One of these ‘republican’ thinkers was Kayden Klemperton. Kayden Klemperton was born in New Holgle city in 1719. He became very interested in philosophy around the age of 11. When he grew up, he became very involved with ideas such as ‘liberty’ and ‘Equality’. By the year 1740, he was also an accomplished writer, writing about republicanism. Having travelled around all of the three kingdoms, he was inspired by the Kingdom of Hawia and dreamed of a United Holingian Republic. Therefore, with the power of the Holy Oriential Empire, along with the three kingdoms, dissipating, he formed the New Holgle Congress with the slogan ‘the Holingian Dream’ along with other republican thinkers to campaign for a unified Republic, stretching from the mountains up north to the sea in the south. In 1747, he, along with George Claymont, went to Hakel to ask the Emperor of the Holy Oriental Empire, Emperor Henry IV, for an audience regarding the ‘independence of the three nations of Holing’. They weren’t even allowed to enter the city. Even with this major setback, the New Holgle Congress continued to believe in their ambition of a United Holing ‘free from Hakel’.

Unification and aftermath

In 1756, the New Holgle congress had their chance. Emperor Henry IV had just died and his successor, Phillip, had not been ready to ascend to the throne. The people of all three kingdoms, many enlightened by ideals such as ‘democracy’, toppled the three kingdoms in July 1756. In New Holgle City, the New Holgle Congress declared the creation of the Free Confederal Republic of Holing and the unification of South Holing, Horing and West Holing into a single nation. Most Holingians cheered the news as they viewed the Monarchy in Hakel as incompetent and extremely corrupt, thus causing famines in 1751 and 1755. There were some Holingians, particularly members of the nobility, who fled to Kingdoms and duchies in Modern day Haling. A number of kingdoms and duchies still within the Holy Oriental Empire were very concerned with the new ‘republic’ on their borders, they feared that should ‘the Holingian Dream’ succeed, the people of their kingdoms and duchies would be influenced by ‘revolutionary ideas’ and rise up to overthrow them. However, the new Emperor, Phillip X, was reluctant to go to war with Holing. Therefore, lead by King Raymond I of the Kingdom of Angland, a council of kings went to Hakel and forced Phillip X to issue a proclamation of rebellion and to raise a coalition to take down Holing. With the success in creating a coalition to fight against Holing, King Raymond famously remarked that the imminent war was to be called ‘the august war’ as the Holingians would not last a month. He was wrong.

The August War

During the weeks before independence and the subsequent August War, the Holingians have been preparing for war. They raided royal armouries and took their weapons and ammunition. Forts belonging to the Holy Oriental Empire were also seized by the new Holingian Government. Kayden Klemperton, having been elected by congress as the nation’s first President, immediately called for all men to volunteer at to form new militia units to take on the approaching coalition. The Coalition has a total of 15 members, mostly bordering Holing and lead by King Raymond of Angland, with support from Emperor Phillip X of the Holy Oriental Empire. The first battle of the war took place in St Louis, near Iceburg. Militia units held firm against the Coalition’s Army, pushing the Coalition back into the Holy Oriental Empire. The Coalition responded to this defeat by landing soldiers in Holing’s major coastal cities and razing them to the ground. The attack included the Capital of New Holgle City. Fortunately, the government of Holing managed to escape before the arrival of the enemy. The new wartime capital of Hrussels, just south of the future site for the capital of Unio Civitatem. The coalition forces were handed another defeat in the Second battle of St Louis and also in the battle of Holgle City. The war was definitely not going well for the Coalition with many of its own generals pursuing personal glory instead of working together as a cohesive unit. The arrival of King Raymond’s professional army in the north did manage to deliver a stinging defeat to militia units in Knoxton and later defeat the Holingians in Missibama City a week after Knoxton. However, King Raymond’s sweep of victories were broken as he was repelled in Coffinmond by General Wallace Dandridge’s Militia units. The decisive victory at Coffinmond forced King Raymond to call for reinforcements from the south of Holing. However, instead of answering the king’s call, General Alexander Edinburg used his army to take Hrussles. This caused King Raymond’s forces to be decisively defeated at the Second Battle of Missibama City on 30 August 1757, a full year after the war was supposed to end. Hrussels would be taken back and General Edinburg would be captured and held as a prisoner by the Holingians to the conclusion of the war. With the victories in the north, President Klemperton ordered General Dandridge down south to retake New Holgle City.

The Second Battle of New Holgle City

General Joseph Clinton in New Holgle City were ready for the Holingians. He has coalition troops entrenched all around the city and he had artillery stationed on several hills near the city. General Dandridge, having come out victorious in the north, was confident that despite the overwhelming imbalance in favour of the Coalition, his experienced men would again startle the coalition. The Massive Second battle of New Holgle City took place in February 28th 1758 and last three bloody weeks. Holingian artillery begin the battle by opening fire on the entrenched Coalition forces on the outskirts of the city. They were countered by the coalition’s own batteries up on bunker hill. General Dandridge knew what had to be done. He launched a massive assault on Bunker Hill in what is now known as the battle of Bunker Hill, unfortunately, his army was spectacularly thrown back in the face of huge casualties due to the cannons on bunker hill. Facing defeat in the eye, General Dandridge ordered his soldiers to retreat from bunker hill. At this moment, in a move that is now considered one of the most stupid decisions in H land’s military history, Commander John Law, cocky and prideful over the massive rout of Holingain forces, decided to pursue Holingian forces as they fled. This caused a gap to open up in the Coalition lines, allowing Holingian soldiers to flood in and surround Law’s army. General Dandridge, upon hearing the news, turned around and as Holingians attacked from all sides, utterly destroyed Law’s Army. The Holingian army would take Bunker Hill the next day and use its cannons to fire on the Coalition. General Clinton would surrender the next day.

End of the August War

After the Second Battle of New Holgle City, the war was effectively over. Coalition holdouts over Holing would be decimated one by one over the next two years. Finally, in late 1760, King Raymond launched a last ditch thrust into Holing and was decisively defeated in the Battle of Mount Cornsfield. That would be the last battle of the war. Fearful of an invasion into the Holy Oriental Empire itself, Emperor Phillip X pulled his support from the Coalition and entered peace negotiations with the Holingians. On 15 July 1761, just in time for Holing’s 6th National Day, the Treaty of Hrussels was signed. Holing was to achieve full independence from the Holy Oriental Empire along with some lands along the border, including half of the Kingdom of Angland. The Peace treaty was said to have been celebrated throughout Holing with church bells all over the nation ringing with people dancing in the streets. King Raymond would abidicate from the throne of Angland with some claiming that he would utter ‘my world has been turned upside down’. The loss of the August War was the final nail in The Coffin of The Holy Oriental Empire. It would officially collapse a decade later, though many today argue that they had already become powerless many years earlier before Holingian independence.

Post-August War era

After the August War, the former three kingdoms would be reorganised into 10 states with other lands under Holing becoming territories. The post-August War era would be however be defined by the struggle for greater power for The Central Government in New Holgle City. This effort was led by Oliver Webb, a veteran that served under General Dandridge. He was opposed by others, namely Adam Hugh. The factions would become known as Confederalist, for those opposing a strong central government while the Anti-Confederalists supported efforts to increase the power of The Central Government. This division within Holing would explode onto the international scene in 1764 when Oliver Webb and other Anti-Confederalists attempted to write a new Constitution that gave greater powers to The Central government. Many Holingians were outraged as they saw this as a return to the tyranny not unlike the New Oriental Empire. However, despite the best efforts of the Confederalists, the Constitution would be ratified by the 10 states by January 1766. Later that same month, President Klemperton, who had been serving as President of Holing for 10 years, retired due to ill health. This would lead to the first ever election in Holing’s history and arguably one of its most important.

The Two Parties in 1766

The nation’s first ever election is considered by many historians around H land today for being one of the most important, if not the most important, in Holingian History. The election, similar to most Holingian elections, was contested by two parties, The Democratic Party and the Liberal Party. The Democratic Party was led by Confederalists with their presidential candidate being Adam Hugh. Adam Hugh was Vice President under President Klemperton and was extremely popular in the northern areas of the country, who felt threatened by the ever increasing power of The Central government. The Democrats generally stood for small government policies and greater power for state governments and gained support from rural areas due to their farmer-friendly beliefs. The other party was the Liberal Party formed by Oliver Webb and other anti-confederalists. They wanted a powerful Central Government to protect Holing’s interests and attracted support from the emerging manufacturing hubs in southern Holing.

The Election of 1766

Before the election, the massive unpopularity of Webb, especially in the aftermath of a few scandals, left the Liberal Party at risk of losing to the Democratic Party by a landslide. Fortunately for them, two factors would arise to save them. The first and arguably much more important is the selection of Wallace Dandridge as the candidate for the Liberals. After the August War, General Dandridge was welcomed back home in Missibama as a war hero. Webb, having served as the General’s Aide de camp during the second battle of New Holgle City, had a deep bond with General Dandridge and thus knew of his Anti Confederalist Sympathies. In March of 1766, he met with General Dandridge to urge him to run for President. General Dandridge was quite reluctant to run for President as he was worried about the radicalism in the Liberal Party, but was eventually convinced to do so when Oliver Webb agreed to tone down the party’s rhetoric. The second Factor was the collapse of the New Oriental Empire. In the middle of the campaign in May of 1766, the New Oriental Empire was officially dissolved with Emperor Phillip X abdicating. During the campaigns, the Democrats used the New Oriental Empire as a Bogeyman and was using the Liberals to reverse Holingian independence. The Collapse not only debunked criticisms that the Liberal Party was controlled by the Empire but it also led to the Democratic Party losing credibility. Adam Hugh would not give up despite these set backs and he would still win overwhelming in the North. The running mates of Dandridge and Hugh is also seen by some as important for the Liberal Victory. Oliver Webb had wanted to be Vice President but his personal unpopularity had worried many, thus he put up a close ally and Governor of Klemperton, George Morris, as the vice presidential candidate for the Liberal Party. The Vice Presidential Candidate of the Democratic Party was Bryan Jen, a writer from the south of the country was most likely chosen to win over some moderate southerners. It partially succeeded in narrowing the margins in several states like Klemperton but may have also dampened enthusiasm among some conservatives, thus when combined with the relative approval of Governor Morris, it may have contributed to a Democrat defeat.

Results of the Election

In 1766, many states did not choose electors through popular vote like they do today. Instead, the state legislatures were responsible for choosing the electors. The states would also hold their elections on different dates, thus the election effectively lasted a month from November to December. By 14 Dec, the results were clear, General Dandridge’s popularity had won the Liberals majorities in many of the state legislatures. The total electoral vote for this election was 100, General Dandridge won 53 Electoral Votes while Vice President Adam Hugh won 47. The victory of General Dandridge is seen as extremely important by historians everywhere as a Hugh victory could have meant a much smaller government in Holing today. General Dandridge was sworn in as the 2nd President of Holing on February 1st 1767.

The Dandridge Administration

The main argument used by Hugh against Dandridge was that he was not experienced in the art of politics and thus was unable to lead. Therefore, once President Dandridge was sworn in as President on February 1st, he set out to prove his worth. Using his moderate credentials, he calmed the fears of many in the North that radical ‘Oliver Webb’ policies were to be put in place in Holing. He also managed to quickly put down a small rebellion over the New Constitution passed by the Liberals during Klemperton’s term. However, President Dandridge was not perfect. In late 1700s, slavery was very prevalent in the North of Holing. Slaves were mainly used to grow and farm tobacco in large plantations. Some Radical Liberals wanted to abolish slavery or at the very least prevent its spread to the rest of the states. Dandridge, himself a slave owner from Missibama, was hesitant to do anything about Slavery despite the agitations of Oliver Webb and other Liberals. He would eventually decide to pass on the problem to the next administration, aiding the future Holingian Civil War. He also implemented many Liberal policies that greatly strengthened the power of The Central Government in New Holgle City which depending on who you ask, either lead to the bureaucratic mess of a government that rules like a Emperor, or higher living standards along with a responsible and caring government unlike those in the rest of H land. President Dandridge was re-elected with 90 electoral votes in the 1770 election.

The end of the Dandridge Administration

By the end of 1774, President Dandridge was extremely popular with the people of Holing and was widely expected to run again for a third term. However, in an address that shocked many, President Dandridge announced that he would be stepping down as President. Despite the urging of Oliver Webb and other radical Liberals, President Dandridge would keep to his stance and did not run in the election of 1774. Instead, his Vice-President, George Morris would run for the Liberal Party. Vice-President Morris won handily with 60 electoral votes. On February 1st 1775, 8 years after he was sworn in. He would leave the Capital to the new President Morris and would return home to Missibama. He died on 18 July 1780, Holing’s National Day. That same day, Adam Hugh, the main rival of Dandridge and champion of the Confederalists would also die just 3 hours later.
